Wiki Request 21500

Hello Matttest, I am a wiki creator for Miraheze, like DarkMatterMan4500. This is a case where I don't believe policy is completely clear on what to do; from what I understand DarkMatterMan fully believes that this is just a copy of Public Test Wiki. I understand the nuance of this request, how it offers testing at a higher level than PTW allows. However I find the use case a) extremely niche (not necessarily reason to refuse) and b) potentially problematic, if nothing else for you in the event this wiki is made open to its requirements but someone can still take over or otherwise break the system you have in place. ManageWiki is not allowed on PTW because it is the final front for wiki management, and I believe to make it 'secure' (allow your wiki to not be broken or compromised), you would have to completely trust the users involved (who would probably know how to create a personal wiki where they could do the same thing) or be trusting. It would be a custom technical solution to arrange it like PTW or to make it 'PTW + managewiki', so this would need other eyes anyway.

In so many words I do not have a specific, Content Policy reason for the request to be declined that is specific and useful, but I do have reluctance in outright approving it without more discussion and details - from you, knowing how you might address or what you think of my concerns with multiple people holding absolute power on one wiki just so they can test, as well as that of others who may get involved (other WCs, a sysadmin such as RhinosF1 as sysadmin plus WC, or as I'm striving for a steward) to know what the limitations or possibilities are to make this request happen.

Due to this nuanced disagreement between wiki creators I've put the discussion here, where all parties can be reliably notified since the request queue is unreliable notifying comments (for example, your ping to DMM in the request did not work) and is a poor interface to converse in. Specifically I'd like to see if other wiki creators or authoritative volunteers would like to offer perspective, and I'd like to prod Dmehus to see this, since he is both a Steward with authority as an arbiter and a Wiki Creator as well. This is not a precedented move and I might have gotten it wrong, so I apologize for confusion that may come of doing it this way as well as defer to parties that might have a better way of approaching this issue. --Raidarr (talk) 12:35, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Per my discussion with Raidarr on Discord and all the previous arguments raised, we believe it is reasonable to  decline this request due to a potential overlap with the Public Test Wiki which would be a violation of our Content Policy. Should you wish to test an extension, you are free to request at the Community portal on the Public Test Wiki that an extension be enabled. Additionally, giving ManageWiki access to random strangers is potentially dangerous as the managewiki right allows users to even edit Special:ManageWiki/permissions which means that a user could, at-will, create a new user group for themselves which outranks all others, promote themselves to it, and then demote everyone else and vandalize the wiki. A potential solution may be to modularize ManageWiki rights into little sections which allow for only access to certain ManageWiki functions depending on what rights you have. This though is something that would require a technical discussion and which we won't dive into right here. Agent Isai ^{Talk to me!} 14:10, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

@Matttest: Please recognize the situation clearly, I am the original author of the articles in unbooks, and it is not like you are reposting at will without the authorization of the original author.

@黑底屍: Feel free to do that. I am just saying that this request is not an appropriate request so it should be closed. In addition, some articles in unbooks are imported from wikia that is not created by you, so it will be plagiarism if you directly copy the work there. @黑底屍: I am the de facto administrator in unbooks, I don’t need your admit. Feel free to move the content to another wiki farm, as I see there is not a wiki farm that is constantly updated other than wikia (which puts advertisements on your site) and miraheze (the best). —Matttest (talk) 03:57, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
