The Finance page is awesome!

Do you have any preferences for naming the Facebook group?

Some options:

  • Miraheze
  • Miraheze supporters
  • Friends of Miraheze

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Rsterbal (talkcontribs)

@Rsterbal: Although the decision for the name is not up to me, I'm just clarifying, is it a page or a group? A group could probably be any of these (but I'm personally liking 'Friends of Miraheze'), but if it's a page we should just use "Miraheze" -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 11:00, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What do you mean by "not done". Are you talking about your request? Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 18:54, 1 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

SyntaxHighlight[edit source]

Thanks for enable this plugin on my wiki

I don't know what happens, my pascal codes are not highlighted. Do you have a example? It has another syntax on Miraheze?

What constitutes a system change?[edit source]

[08:33] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> When the upgrade to 1.28 happened the response in channel was that you had tested it
[08:34] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> I think not having a test server is not working
[08:34] <+SPF|Cloud> The only MediaWiki upgrade done by me was MW 1.26 iirc
[08:34] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> The sysadmins need training on how the system works
[08:35] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> Who tested the 1.28 update?
[08:35] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> maybe a ticket to show everyone is approving an upgrade is a good idea?
[08:35] <+SPF|Cloud> I have no idea.
[08:35] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> You should be documenting major system changes
[08:36] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> you should have notices of non system issues like expired certificates moved to another channel
[08:36] <+SPF|Cloud> There was no major system change.
[08:36] <+SPF|Cloud> At least, no infrastructure change
[08:36] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> an upgrade of the mediawiki software is a major system change
[08:37] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> I'm not sure why you would think otherwise
[08:38] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> You do not have robust discussion of your decisions
[08:38] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> an IRC channel isn't very accessible to many of your users
[08:38] <+SPF|Cloud> 14:37:31 <+ SPF|Cloud> The changes (code-wise and database-wise) were not that major.
[08:39] <+SPF|Cloud> In case that wasn't send, irccloud failed to send that
[08:39] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> I'll see if Brent agrees
[08:39] <+SPF|Cloud> Sent* hopefully I fixed that now.
[08:39] <Rob-Sterbal-Chro> then I'll be done

Oh, hey @Rsterbal:. It's in our advertising that we run the latest stable version of Mediawiki, so not upgrading is a major change? Meh, maybe not. I think we always intend to keep upgrading, so there isn't really a need to keep polling everyone. It's part of our makeup, and on the front page of So I don't think we need community approval because y'all signed up for it.

I... don't really have a strong opinion about upgrade notification, except that it needs to be done at some point, and we need people to help look out for modules that break. This time we let Extension:MassEditRegex slip through the cracks (and so did its maintainers). I'm a little more worried about what happens if a skin doesn't work and we just break things. But again this is not really something that is important to me personally. Labster (talk) 21:36, 24 December 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I think the point I'm making is that you need to reach out to your users differently than your system administrators. Rsterbal (talk) 06:25, 7 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mini-grant w/ user:Guy vandegrift[edit source]

Mission statement

I plan to submit this to the contact person, as well as to NSF and the American Astonomical Society just before the deadline. The fact that the original grant-submission website has been taken down is almost an advantage because I can use this as an excuse to send the proposal to others who might know how to best get this funding. The emphasis will be on funding Miraheze and not on my efforts with wikiversity:Wright State University Lake Campus, because my efforts will be halted if Miraheze does not thrive. Your name is on the draft, but will be removed if you do not approve. Don't worry if you are late in approving your participation in this - it would be a nice touch but will have likely little impact on whether this effort succeeds.--Guy vandegrift (talk) 17:10, 8 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As I try to complete the grant on a day when I have a 5 hour drive ahead of me, I am beginning to think that your name should perhaps not be on it. I am the teacher with a reason for Miraheze to exist, and am not expected to know what support Miraheze requires. This permits me write a vague request for funds. I really do think we can fund Miraheze as an educational project, sometime in the near future. --Guy vandegrift (talk) 18:13, 8 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will mention you and show the budget numbers on the minigrant. We do need to talk, but at the moment the only thing you need to be doing is keeping Miraheze alive. I need to beta-test the "dashboards" at miraheze.wright and Wikiversity, and at least a few of the students need to put out some quality contributions. Then, comes the hard part: We need to "sell" this idea to the academic community. With all the insane politics going on in the USA, somebody is certain to listen to an idea about reducing the cost of higher education...right?--Guy vandegrift (talk) 10:55, 9 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I haven't contacted you for a while, but I do intend to seek funds for Miraheze. But my first grant is for a quality student who wrote this physics essay. It illustrates what we can do if students are allowed to write privately on wikis, and it gave me an excuse to propose its inclusion in a Wikibook on first-year physics. RFS[edit source]

Hi, regarding this edit, are users indeed allowed to support vote themselves on their own Stewardship requests? --- Lawrence-Prairies (talk contribs email), 22:31, 12 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I just sent you an email regarding the non-profit legal status[edit source]

I got today's email asking if I was still "good to go" with the non-profit incorporation plan. I answered "yes". You should also know that there was a bit of a student revolt about my use of Wikiversity last semester that might put into jeopardy the use of this in a live classroom. While this will hurt our funding, it also takes some pressure off, since it will allow me to devote more resources to Miraheze, and keep the "node" at as a "sample" that will not need constant attention from me.

I am in a dark mood, and am writing about all this under my user:Guy vandegrift space at It is best not to take that page too seriously. All evidence is that the dean supports me, and even if I do stop the Miraheze teaching project with live students, I can still work on this project almost full time during the Summer of 2017.--Guy vandegrift (talk) 18:06, 16 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I will send you my phone number by email if you want to talk.--Guy vandegrift (talk) 18:06, 16 January 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Extension question[edit source]

is there a chance this extension would be approved?

This extension adds the ability to nearly use wiki syntax to create an external image with a link/url behind it.

That i cant't donate negitive amount!

Donation Amount[edit source]

Thanks for noticing my tiny almost negligible amount of donation. Life in Malaysia is hard now. I figured I should at least contribute a tiny amount that I can afford before year ends. I donated USD 1, unfortunately PayPal does take away some, even donation.

I'm sorry that bits do not impress you, but it does mean something to me.

--Lohchuantuck (talk) 22:44, 17 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Any donations are welcome :) Next time, please do not chose the "purchase" item when donating, so that nothing is deducted from your donation (since you are not purchasing anything, you are just donating). Reception123 (talk) (C) 08:08, 18 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Miraheze is operated as a charitable service. No one should feel obligated to donate, especially not those for whom life is financially hard now. It's not really important for everyone to send money, because you contribute by creating wiki pages on our service, and help to build the community. Our most important contributions are not financial, but your information, time, and community-building. --Labster (talk) 05:39, 23 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Balance at Finance for April 13 is off by $200, surely? though corrected the next day... Spıke (talk)02:14 15-Apr-2018

Contributions via PayPal[edit source]

Thank you for supporting in this open spirit way : )

I've just sent you 50 euros, and I hope it worked ! (It costed 3,94 euros to do it, that is almost 10 % of the received amount)

Since PayPal blocked Wikileaks account in 2010, I wonder if they are other ways to contribute to the financial part via other means ?

Need contributors for my wiki![edit source]

Hi, I started a new wiki called Sustainapedia. I was wondering if you could help me with my wiki and help contribute to it. I need volunteers who will willing enough to edit all the time (almost active every ten seconds, just like Wikipedia), and to also make a difference. If you could ask other users to start contributing and continuously, that would be great. Plus, I need other administrators too who can patrol and protect articles from vandalism and spam. Are you willing to help me? If so, start creating your user page and start contributing and patrolling for vandalism. I will give you admin rights once you come to the site. Cheers! Here is the link: DoveWindsor (talk) 11:30, 10 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Re: Did one of you actually happen?[edit source]

I don't know to be honest with you. But you're welcome for the donation. Hypercane (talk) 11:58, 24 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Check could be in the mail[edit source]

Please use Special:EmailUser to tell me if there is an address or P.O. Box to which I can mail a check. (I expect not to be in contact with the guy who put my last payment into Paypal until the start of the 2019-2020 NFL season.) 23:27 3-Apr-2019 Thanks; check is in the mail! Spıke (talk)04:05 5-Apr-2019

PS--Saw your note at Finance. You are welcome to list my name as the contributor there rather than "Anonymous" (especially as anyone can figure it out from your change summary). My user name has been changed from "Spike the Dog" to "Spike" since my contribution two years ago, so it might be more informative to revise that. Someday I might want to brag about total contribution. (I fell away one year ago based on the TLS conversion.) This year the reason I sent you a check is not because I dislike Miraheze but because I dislike Google + subsidiaries. I do not require tax deductability, so please don't delay on that basis. Spıke (talk)02:24 25-Apr-2019

Apparently you can't figure it out because I didn't embezzle the amount over $50. It's not included on the Finance page yet, that's someone else. But I guess I'll go ahead and cash it then. --Labster (talk) 02:52, 25 April 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Is the procedure the same this year? (Mail to you again? Make it out to you? Same address?) Spıke (talk) 20:59 3-Jun-2020
