A few notes[edit source]

A few notes to add to the paypal process:

There is a fee to send money via paypal

A $5 donation will result in a $5.45 charge to the sender.

We are investigating other options. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.22.12.35 (talkcontribs)

There aren't really better options than that. If you don't set it up as a purchase -- because it isn't -- I've never seen additional charges. But even that, essentially every payment network charges, and often more for lower amounts. That's only 9%. Other sites take 5% plus processing fees, which are in the 2-4% range (typically something like 2%+0.35$). So there's really no way to improve on small donations. We could possibly improve this with Patreon, which does lots of lump-sum transactions -- essentially aggregating inflows and outflows, but that would take routine donation (and still 5% overhead). If you're upset about actually seeing the transaction fees... welcome to the real world. Vorticity (talk) 20:27, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

I'll check into this further. I assume that people could mail you a check, and you could then add it to group's funds.

I'll at least find out what other people are doing.

Please add me to the donors group when you get a chance. ( https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/Special:GlobalUsers/donator ) Thanks! Robert Sterbal 412-977-3526

They couldn't "mail us" as we don't currently have an address, and we all live (including the founders) in different locations. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 03:49, 15 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Gratipay[edit source]

https://gratipay.com looks like a good fit for Miraheze donations/funding. Jayvdb (talk) 04:50, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Add documentation category to the Donate page[edit source]

Will a Meta Administrator add the page Donate to the following Category:Documentation please as the aforementioned page is protected. Thanks. Borderman  talk | contribs | email 21:53, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

The same goes for the following page Finance as it is connected to donations. Thanks. Borderman  talk | contribs | email 22:08, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Done with the Category:Finance under the documentation cat. — revi 22:27, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Better that way. Borderman  talk | contribs | email 22:58, 15 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Paypal alternative?[edit source]

I would be donating today if you accepted a method other than Paypal. Google Wallet/Pay, Square Cash, and Zelle come to mind as options that would probably be viable (I say this without knowing which country(s) the site admins operate out of). Sparr (talk) 22:27, 26 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Sparr: Thanks for the suggestion, there have been many others as well. I will ask @Labster: (the finance manager) about this. --Reception123 (talk) (C) 08:15, 27 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Are there any pay services out there which don't require giving out residential address to sign up for them? I started setting up Paypal but ditched when it got to that point. Tycio (talk) 04:27, 17 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

I would also make a donation via an alternative to Paypal. Even with Paypal, I was expecting to see an option to pay with a regular credit card without needing a Paypal account, which I didn't see. Gregfuller 20:15, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Crypto Donations[edit source]

Hi there, just suggesting that you add a Bitcoin or Monero wallet address for us to be able to donate BTC or XMR to you. Thanks for your hard work! --Itsjamiegray (talk) 18:42, 17 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Itsjamiegray: This is a great suggestion, and I personally see no issues with this, particularly since Miraheze Limited does not have registered charitable status capable of issuing income tax receipts for UK residents. Many other open-source projects offer a cryptocurrency donation method, and we should have at least one, I think. I will {{ping}} @Owen: to this. Dmehus (talk) 20:09, 17 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Re-@Owen:. I'm not exactly on the cryptocurrency bandwagon, but Keybase gave a bunch of its users free coins last year, so I have some sitting in my account. I used it to pay for something for the first time two days ago because my web host NearlyFreeSpeech.net supports it. Turns out to have the lowest processing fees out of all options. I got the banner on Miraheze today and would be happy to respond to the call-to-action, but there's still no option. Colby Russell (talk) 01:21, 22 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I’ve been meaning to get around to this for a while. Bitcoin address is; 1BcntPpys9vzdEHG3qQGjn2xsuZphzzn2U which can be used to donate money to Miraheze Limited. Thank you, Owen (talk) 01:38, 22 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Owen: Oh, nice! I didn't realize we accepted Bitcoin. That's great. Dmehus (talk) 03:38, 22 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Itsjamiegray: ^ Dmehus (talk) 03:40, 22 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Will you consider removing the crypto address for the same reasons Wikimedia has? Naleksuh (talk) 09:22, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I would not agree with removing this option. Bitcoin should be left as an option for users to donate anonymously, by removing it, it is to remove the choice of a user to donate privately. Cheers, Matttest (talk) 11:13, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi, based on that this has been a donation option for around 18 months now and we've had no donations through this method - and further given the current climate of crypto-currencies, I will remove this as an option. Owen (talk) 10:00, 4 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Request for Changing Translation Unit 7[edit source]

Hello, please change the translation unit 7 to say "Or you can send a regular monthly payment of either $2, $18 or $450 via GitHub Sponsors" instead of "Or you can send a regular monthly payment of either $2, $18, or whatever amount you can afford via GitHub Sponsors" as GitHub Sponsors does not support donating in whatever amount you like. Please be sure to check these from the next time as this can be problematic for high-traffic pages (but hopefully is not yet in this case as the change was made just a few minutes ago). Please also consider using interwiki links or prefixes here instead of external links to link the GH page. Thank you. Redmin Contributions CentralAuth (talk) 18:03, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Once you do that, I will be happy to update the translated versions. Thanks. Redmin Contributions CentralAuth (talk) 18:04, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
R4356th I wasn't sure where your second option ended as there was no closing quotation mark, so I've modified it in another way that minimizes the updates required to Donate based on the constantly fluctuating GitHub Sponsors tiers, which, in turn, should minimize translators' work. Dmehus (talk) 18:38, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oops, yes, I should update the external links to interwiki links. Dmehus (talk) 18:39, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
R4356th Now  done. Dmehus (talk) 18:43, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

obsolete tag[edit source]

Lens0021, yes, Donate is sysop-protected, as it contains hyperlinks to external donation pages. In any case, thank you for providing a clear request by specifying what to change in the format of replacing x with y. Accordingly, this has been  done. Dmehus (talk) 04:53, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

New donation method to add?[edit source]

Could someone with access to edit the Donate page, please update with new donation method (ko-fi)? The following was supplied to me by volunteers in Discord, as a new donation method. Some are interested in more amounts/options for recurring payments (ran into this in Discord recently, someone asked, I linked to Donate then realized it doesn't have the flexible option they were after):

"Exclusively" or "mainly funded" through user donations[edit source]

The page Finance says "Miraheze is powered exclusively by donations." And this page says "Miraheze is mainly funded through user donations." SimpleSignal (talk) 00:16, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I am not aware of anything else that funds Miraheze; the idea of a merchandise store has been brought up more than once but not actualized at this time. Tali64³ (talk | contributions) 00:55, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
