Account - lost password, no email, how do I fix it?

I created User:Whitehaze as my original account but forgot the password, and have no e-mail attached, is there a way to change the password at all, as I'm locked out of the wiki I created as User:Whitehaze. --Whitehaze-0 (talk) 15:00, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Accounts are technically linked through CU-based evidenced so. John (talk) 18:49, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
Looks good to me. Whitehaze-0, can you attach (and verify!) an email address to your account, so we can send you a temporary password? Also, please associate an email address with your old account after this has been done. Southparkfan (talk) 19:10, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Seeking the truth.... to help my country

Can you look at the example of my wiki goal here?
https://ayudasocial.miraheze.org/wiki/Discusi%C3%B3n:P%C3%A1gina_principal

Do you think this is possible on a wiki?
I have no doubt about loading data, but I have no idea if then we can access data intelligently organized by city, neighborhood and type of support provided, etc.

Probably the kind of topic is more appropriate for a relational database, but I have no idea where to host it free and reliably.

I would appreciate some advice.

Thank you very much.

Request for wiki deletion

Dear Meta's staff,

I'm sorry that I've to request for my wiki deletion, 'jubeat Wiki @ TH' on mwiki.jubeatwikith.ga, as my need doesn't fit your security standards so it would be the best for others and their resources, as this wiki serves anyone who wants to have their own wiki, if I abandon my wiki. I want to say thank you to everyone who works on this wiki for us. I'll be back here for sure if I have to create a useful wiki in the future. If there is anything I need to do, please tell me and I'll handle it as soon as possible.

Jiravatt.r (talk) 18:48, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

P.S.1 I don't know if it's the right place to make a request here so please tell me where should it be if it shouldn't be here.

P.S.2 If there's any mistakes in my writing, I apologize for that as my skill on English writing is not quite good :-(

Hi, this is fine. As the wiki is a custom domain, I'll remove the configuration now and ear-mark the database itself to be deleted shortly. Thanks for using us and it'll be great to see you in future! John (talk) 22:02, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Request for interwiki - Link to branch wiki site of Miraheze.

I ask Stewards to add an interwiki lable that users can jump to other branch wiki sites in Miraheze because I use several sub-sites. It might be useful to other users. --Utolee90 (talk) 13:09, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

@Utolee90: Please request specific prefixes for specific wikis and we'll see. Conflicts will be ignored. It's unreasonable to make a link for every wiki so.. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 17:14, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
@NDKilla: I intended I want to make interwiki of form "https://$1.miraheze.org/", using prefix as "Site:(wikiname)". Is this any way to link other wikis under Miraheze using short words rather than writing "full url" address? --Utolee90 (talk) 11:30, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Your CSS is caching hard

Check out this page: https://xof.miraheze.org/wiki/MirAPI

That's CSS I completely rm -rf'd from the wiki and there's no way to force it to display what is actually on MediaWiki:Common.css now. I'm having a problem with the source code and I can't post it until I make it clear that the page it's on isn't free like the rest of the wiki so it can't be taken by rival wiki hosts. XOF (talk) 23:00, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

I'm not sure how to check what the current CSS of that page is, but based on the fact that you use a background image set to 100% of the page width it actually looks like it's doing what it should. I believe the 'page' goes from the vertical line on the right of the sidebar (left of the page button, past the edge of the text) all the way to the right side of the screen. This seems like something that should be in a protected header IMO instead of MediaWiki:Common.css (especially since you're just using it to modify the top of page?) Try editing the width or playing around with it a bit and then adding "?action=purge" (no quotes) to the end of the url after you save the page. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 11:57, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi XOF, I strongly recommend you to test CSS changes before applying them in production. The caching problem with CSS has been partially fixed (now the CSS cache will be purged after 5 minutes), thanks for finding that.
Also, if you want your content to be copyright-protected, then that's fine, but your footer still shows "Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike". I recommend you to request a license change. Greetings, Southparkfan (talk) 15:12, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Does Phabricator allow you to post code without making it free software? If so I only need to post it there. XOF (talk) 23:35, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
I suppose we can do whatever we want with out Phabricator Pastes, but you can do the same thing with your wiki content. Wikis don' t have personal Phabricators, we use it for our global issue tracking. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 12:08, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Change domain and logo?

Dear miraheze-Team,

I wan't to warmly thank you for you great service :) It's great that there are such opportunities on the web! First I want to ask if it is possible to change my domain from nanopedia.miraheze.org to nanopedia.cf. I changed the C-Name Records on my domain to miraheze and requested a CSR-Certificate (which worked for some hours) but unfortunately the domain was changed back to the subdomain and the CSR-Certificate doesn't work anymore.. Is there a way to change that? And as I already made my custom logo for my wiki is it possible to change the miraheze logo to my own or do you want to keep it as backtrack to your website?

Thank you very much. Best Regards, Tim H. (User:Nanopedia)

Okay. Thanks for using miraheze. If you want to request feature, please going to Request_features. And if you want to upload logo, pixel maximum 135 x135 px thanks. TriX (talk) 09:19, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
Could you change my domain then with a CSR-Certificate :)? Where do I upload and set up the logo? :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nanopedia (talkcontribs)
I'm not sysadmin. I don't to change domain on your wiki and also logo. You should to upload on your wiki. If the change subdomain you submit in Request_features.TriX (talk) 09:37, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
@Nanopedia: Please sign your messages (with ~~~~) to create signatures and avoid confusion. Also, please read custom domains for information on custom domains. Generally we will have to send a to create a CSR for your domain and our servers, and then you send this CSR to a certificate authority to get an SSL cert that you then provide to us.
Edit, just saw you created a Phabricator ticket, which is now closed as resolved. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 13:28, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
Sorry for the dumb question but do I have to buy a SSL-Certificate or where do I have to send this CSR to get SSL-Certificate? I got my free domain from FreeNom Nanopedia (talk) 13:40, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

The reason they don't show up is they're not registered on your wiki. They need to visit the wiki (logged in) in order for their account to be created. Alternatively they might have to login in the wiki to trigger the automatic creation of their account. John (talk) 14:13, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Bad translation - Français - CHERCHER

Hi,

I have a Miraheze Wiki in French.
MediaWiki is a fantastic system, but...
I see that one specific word has a translation error (or typing error most likely).
The word "search" in French is "CHERCHER" not "CHARCHER".
It is almost everywhere ... That is very confusing and disrupting!
!
Is there a way to let the team responsible for MediaWiki to know of that mistake?

Thanks.

Rodrigo Marques Canonmarques (talk) 16:31, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi Canonmarques, in your wiki request you specified "frc" (Cajun French) as the requested language. This is not the same as "French" (fr), which you can see if you go to https://eva.miraheze.org/wiki/Page_Principale?uselang=fr. If you want I can change the language of your wiki to "fr". Southparkfan (talk) 19:35, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
YES! PLEASE! That was a mistake... I taught it means CANADIAN French, not CADIEN French...So, in my case, French is better than Cajun French. Thanks Canonmarques (talk) 19:23, 15 June 2016 (UTC)

Where are the servers of miraheze located?

Well, the title question says it all. Patribus (talk) 22:33, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi, the majority of our servers are located in the Netherlands near Rotterdam but we host three servers in America for various reasons. The core backbone of the service (MediaWiki, databases, mail, monitoring and other dependencies) are wholly located in the Netherlands. We have caching and DNS services distributed equally in the Netherlands and Atlanta, US to ensure we can serve content quickly to people not in Europe, Africa or Eastern Asia but also to provide redundancy and failsafes for critical infrastructure. We also have off-site backups with a separate host in Chicago, US to ensure even in the worst case scenario, we can quickly bring services back online with little or no data loss. I hope this is what you were looking for! John (talk) 11:25, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
Dear John, thank you a lot for the extensive report. Just another question: would the users have access to the backup data of their own wikis, in case you 'disappear' from the net? I just want to be sure I have the chance to reinstall it, should miraheze suffer some blackout. Cheers Patribus (talk) 01:27, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
The backups we run are exclusively for our own use only because they're drag and drops of our file system, so they're not entirely useful outside of our database servers. We do run content backups on request of a wikis users and provide these when they're done, but new requests have to be made everytime you want a new backup. If we were to 'disappear' I'm sure we'd see it coming and put in a contingency plan to either ensure the fame gets back up in a reasonable time or we start preparing backups for every single wiki. Worst case, I can recover all wiki content individually through the database backup and then redistribute it to the relevant people quickly. Most of us have been part of a farm which had disappeared suddenly and we saw the distress it caused for users and volunteers because of the lack of backups - which is why weve addressed it at the start here and have fairly basic idea and plans on how to recover to a sucessful degree from a massive failure. I hope this is also what you were looking for, if not ask me again and I'll be more specific! John (talk) 10:50, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi there! It appears you have administrator and bureaucrat rights on the wiki in question. I (a user with global rights) have noticed issues when trying to use my rights on wikis in a non-English language. Please try completely logging out and logging back in, being sure to use the right account. After this, instead of a message saying the wiki is only accessible to administrators and members, you should be able to see the main page (and all other content). Need my wiki private

Hi,

thanks again for the wiki. Can I now get it in private mode?

I would also like to have some of the pages public, but i'm not sure what pages will be public. Can I make those changes myself?

Thanks again,

Rulmer

(Currently) Only system administrators can switch wikis between private and not, but we do so on request. Unfortunately, you can't really choose which pages are public/private, as mediawiki isn't really made a CMS. Your wiki is either all public, or you give us a list of pages and we can put them in a whitelist that makes them readable even when they're private. (This is usually used for the main page and special pages like Special:UserLogin that are required for technical reasons). Please be mindful of the fact that each time you want us to update the readable pages on a private wiki it requires a configuration edit, and as such won't happen immediately. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 12:34, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
(PS) The above is about ds.miraheze.org -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 12:34, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
There are ways to do it but you have to be really careful to make sure they aren't visible. You have to do all kinds of tests because they can show up in places like template previews. There are extensions that can do per page access but you shouldn't trust them with anything sensitive. XOF (talk) 13:04, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
@XOF: Again, MediaWiki isn't really made to be a CMS. Any of the extensions you're talking about would have to go through a security review (which usually includes vulnerabilities to our systems, not readability of pages) if you accepted the risks they might be enabled but I'm telling you there's no really secure way to do it. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 14:56, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Links still red after new page created

Hi, I have started to add a couple of pages/templates to my wiki and have noticed that my the red links after creating and saving new pages are still showing as red (showing the visited red). I click on the link and it takes me to the newly created page, so the link should blue. I have cleared the cache and tried it on three browsers: safari, chrome and firefox and it shows the same. This has happened to me before and I know I am bit rusty on mediawiki, having not used it for a couple of years, but I can't remember how to resolve this. Any suggestions? Thanks. Borderman  talk | contribs | email 13:23, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Could you please link one of the pages? Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 15:05, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
Here is one example page: Document library page, which I have just set up today. And here's a template page of a navigation bar I am using on several page. On the template page the links are showing up red still but on the document page they are blue. Curious. Borderman  talk | contribs | email 15:20, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
For me the existent pages are blue and the non-existent ones are in red. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 15:26, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
Very strange. They're not blue on any of the browsers I'm using. I noticed I have to click on a link to make it blue. If I got to another page the links are red again until I click on the same link but on that page instead. Also, images upload fine but they show as red file links. When I click on that I am directed to the upload page again. Somewhat confused. Can you see a basic hand-drawn sketch map on this page? Borderman  talk | contribs | email 15:35, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
I can't see the map. Maybe it's because the uploaded image had a different name. I'll check. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 16:06, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

(reset indent) @Borderman: this is all just caused by caching, I purged the page you linked with the map and the map shows up, same for links. See this manual page on purging. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 16:10, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Yes, now I see the map as well. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 16:10, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
@NDKilla: and @Reception123: Success! Thank you very much for your help, that's good to know for the future. Is this something I will have to do every time I add pages and images? Or will mediawiki purge the cache itself eventually? Borderman  talk | contribs | email 16:29, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
MediaWiki automatically updates links (file links and wikilink colors) every so often, but if you create a page and then click the redlinks to create those pages you will notice this a lot so it can be a helpful trick. Otherwise, normal page editing and viewing should make it purge itself. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 21:20, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Adoption/Unlock requests separate page

As a lot of requests are coming in, I think we should make a separate page for adoption and unlock requests. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 03:36, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

My wiki error

MediaWiki internal error.

Exception caught inside exception handler.

Set $wgShowExceptionDetails = true; at the bottom of LocalSettings.php to show detailed debugging information.

I entered the wiki to see these words, how can I do? https://casuarina.miraheze.org --Yunlin2015 (talk) 07:48, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Wiki Error

Over at my wiki there was an internal error and now the images seem to be missing. PlatinumYellow (talk) 23:04, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi, the server which is responsible for hosting, serving and rendering images and static content is currently down due to an upstream technical issue. We are working with the physical host provider in order to resolve the issue as soon as possible and a report will be written up and published once this is done. Apologies for any inconvenience! Images have disappeared from poserdazfreebies

Hello! The image files seem to have disappeared from the Main namespace of poserdazfreebies. https://poserdazfreebies.miraheze.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles currently presents a long list of "Error creating thumbnail: File missing" messages, except when the images are used in the User or Template namespaces. --Robkelk (talk) 23:42, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Please see the above section. Thanks, John (talk) 23:43, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Group: Administrators and Bureaucrats
Reason: My wiki has just ben created but the rights haven't followed so I cannot get access to it.

Other users feel free to support/oppose/abstain from this RfP but please state your reasoning below.

@Xdjibi: Moved this here as this is the correct page. I see you do have the rights. Are you sure you logged in properly? Please try logging in again, and re-post here if it still doesn't work. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 14:36, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
@Reception123: Indeed, I do. I did not pay attention to the fact that, coming from Meta where I was already logged in, I needed to log again in my Wiki to get access. Thank you. Xdjibi (talk) 18:09, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

exception to dormancy policy for bitcoindebates wiki?

Hi -- I asked in the IRC channel last week about getting an exception to the dormancy policy for the bitcoindebates wiki, for the reason that it was made to be read & already has near complete info, and doesn't need to be updated much anymore. On IRC people seemed to think it qualified, but it doesn't look like it has been added to an exception list yet because I still get a warning about lack of edits when I go to the page. Can I be given an exception?

Elliotolds (talk) 00:25, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

@Elliotolds: Your wiki already has an exception to the dormancy policy, according to the policy page and the code for the script. If you are still seeing the notice, you probably just need to remove the notice from MediaWiki:Sitenotice on your wiki (blank that page or replace all the text with a single hyphen (-)) -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 01:52, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

Importing an external Wiki XML dump file?

Hi guys, I have tried to use the Special:Import page to import an XML dump that I saved from my older Wiki site. However the dump file is around 60Mb in size, which is apparently too big. Would it be possible to send thix XML to you to extract the individual files somehow - or at least the images (as the previous Wiki used different syntax, hence I will most likely enter the individual pages in text form here)? Thx! Joe

@John: @Southparkfan: @NDKilla: Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 12:22, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
Hi Joe, can you compress this file (7-zip should give best compression rate), and send it to sysadmin(at)miraheze.org? Please also tell me the URL of your wiki, and then I can import it server-side (which allows XML files bigger than 40MB). Southparkfan (talk) 14:57, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
Joeyeti (talk)Thx! Sent the link to the XML file to your sysadmin email. Joe

Got "wiki being created" notification about address/title I've never requested

Hi, I've been requesting "plazmaburst.miraheze.org" wiki creationg but got notification about "fabio.miraheze.org" wiki being created for me instead :) Not sure how this can happen but I don't even know what "fabio" is. Possibly this name had to be registered for someone else?

And yes, I've been requesting name "plazmaburst.miraheze.org" for my game and so it can't have "fabio" instead of "plazmaburst" :P

Requested "plazmaburst.miraheze.org" wiki still does not exist.

As I replied on my talkpage, it was my mistake, I have now created the correct wiki. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 04:10, 16 July 2016 (UTC)

"No edits" notification still on foodsharinghamburg Wiki

Hey Folks!

After some time of no activity we started using the foodsharinghamburg.miraheze.org Wiki. But still the notification on the top, saying "Miraheze Staff has noticed that this wiki has no edits or logs made within the last 45 days." and so on has not gone away. Will it only take some more time to go away or must it be deleted by a Miraheze admin?

Kind regards Goessek (talk) 15:16, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

@Goessek: If you edit please feel free to remove it. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 16:21, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
If you're an administrator on the wiki (which it appears that you are), then all you have to do to remove it is blank this page. Omni Flames (talk) 02:16, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
I have removed the notice. Reception123 (talk) (contribs) 03:03, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Generic privacy policy and disclaimer

I was just wondering if you intend to include a generic privacy policy and diclaimer that can be used by all miraheze wiki users. A generic one can then be adapted to a user's specific needs. Is this something you would consider adding? If not, do you know where suitable generic policies can be obtained? Thanks. Borderman  talk | contribs | email 18:53, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

The privacy policy (and TOS) is a goal for 2016, and has a Phabricator ticket: https://phabricator.miraheze.org/T476. I think that our privacy policy should never be overriden, though - and that means wiki's shouldn't link to their own privacy policies (or at least put a big, bold disclaimer in it that ours overrides anyone else's). Southparkfan (talk) 19:01, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
Meta's policies would be specific to Meta only. As each wiki is different, slightly different policies should apply, which is why a generic TOS and privacy policy would be helpful to other wiki users to adapt to their own sites. Meta would have it's own specific set of policies - that wouldn't change. My TOS would be different to Meta's. It would, however, be based on a generic template. It's this generic template for a TOS and privacy policy that would be useful for other users and this is what I am wondering could be made available to other users. Is this a viable option? Borderman  talk | contribs | email 21:15, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
Meta is just Miraheze's wiki, a privacy policy by us will be available on Meta only, and that privacy policy should not be overriden by other wikis. Miraheze (we) have all of your personal data [that you gave to us], and anything that's only accessible by system administrators, stewards, CheckUsers, oversighters and other staff members is definitely subject to our privacy policy, and the rules for managing such data should not be determined by other wikis, if you know what I mean. Southparkfan (talk) 21:18, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
Ok, yes that makes sense. So, because it is a wikifarm and everything is centralised through Miraheze (and not a separate/individual hosting package) every wiki is subject to Miraheze's policies. Does this include the TOS? I only ask because if yes, then that saves me a job of having to write them. I did that for an older wiki a few years ago, written from a rather stilted, generic template, and I know how carefully worded they have to be! Borderman  talk | contribs | email 21:54, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
I think that would include the TOS too, although I am not sure (we have someone for saying that :-)). Miraheze [we] provide the services and servers, and usage of them should comply with our rules. If your TOS is restricter than ours (for example, maximum amount of edits per minute), then I think your own TOS should be fine, but again, it's Labster's call. Southparkfan (talk) 09:40, 20 July 2016 (UTC)
That all sounds good to me. Will be interesting to see how the policies develop. It would be useful if they weren't too heavy going or convoluted. Borderman  talk | contribs | email 16:13, 20 July 2016 (UTC)
