Renaming Problem

Hello. This is my backup account that I'm temporarily using. Vandalism by administrator

Users Lipomir and Bloodia have committed vandalism and erasure on several pages within the Atlas collaborative wiki, on which they are administrators. This particular wiki is a collaboration between a few groups. Although these deletions initially targeted the moderation team for our group, after moderation action, the users have started deleting all pages by our users on the wiki, and removing the members of our group from the wiki. This was done without warning and without the permission of anyone involved but the aforementioned administrators, in what we consider a severe breach of the Miraheze code of conduct. If there is any way that we can have these deletions restored, the dormant status removed and their admin privileges revoked, that would be greatly appreciated.

One of our users, Gorbatov was an administrator and retained their privileges, so we managed to save through various caches and administrative actions our work, but we would still like, if possible, the deleted content to be restored and the users who committed the erasures to have their administrative privileges on our wiki removed.

@Valdiu: I have revoked permissions of Lipomir, Bloodia, and Szprot for abusing their permissions, and blocked (locally, at least for now) them because of their vandalism. Local administrators can undelete the pages (as well as Stewards) to fix it. Can I be a bureaucrat on a wiki where there are no active administrators and bureaucrats?

Currently Kjh010206, the only bureaucrat on 자유반달위키 was globally locked, and other administrators don't edit after 2016. The wiki doesn't seems to be moderated.

Also, on 리센티아 위키, Suneungsiheom, the only administrator on 리센티아 위키 stated that the wiki is discontinued and blocked themselves. Most of contributions on that wiki are just vandalism, like this.

Therefore I want to start managing the wiki instead. Please consider granting the bureaucrat permission on those wikis. Thank you. - P1av0rSe01Complaint? 00:08, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

Wiki not setup properly

I've just had a wiki setup for me, but received a message from The Pioneer about some technical difficulties:

I don't understand why my request for a wiki was denied.

I requested a wiki, and I got a notice. I can't read the whole notice because it's cut off and when I try to visit the location of the notice it says there is "no special page". It says it was denied because "Forking the existing wiki (for possible block evasion)." However, I never got blocked on such a wiki and that wiki does not exist, to my knowledge. I may have confused whoever handled my request, so I will clarify. My friends wanted me to write an article about a very bad user on this wiki, but I can't because it's about bad fandoms, not bad users. Vandalism on 리센티아 위키

리센티아 위키 was recently vandalized by some users and the administrator on there is inactive.

Such type of vandalism is known in some wiki-related communities and some trolls vandalize wikis in that type, but not often.

Pages Have "Too Many Edits" To Be Deleted?

The staff on All The Tropes have run into a small number of pages which, when we try to delete them, result in the following error message:

You do not have permission to delete this page, for the following reason:
This page has a large edit history, over 250 revisions. Deletion of such pages has been restricted to prevent accidental disruption of All The Tropes.

None of the ATT admins recalls implementing such a restriction, and we don't know where this restriction would be. Can someone please clue us in on where it is and who can change it? PS - I don't like this restriction, especially as the default. Admins can undelete any page they delete in error. If deletion is "disruptive," then your problem is not with deletion but with your Admins! Spıke (talk)11:48 16-Feb-2020
This isn’t a social issue, rather a technical issue caused implementation. Stewards are able to delete these pages on request. A Phabricator ticket isn’t necessary. John (talk) 13:14, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the information. Should we wait for the fallout from this weekend's attempted changes and subsequent rollback to settle before making such a request? Also, I've been informed that we have a number of images that are similarly resistant to deletion, reporting errors like this ones:

On Amazing YouTubers Wiki, I gave a user named Landscape the confirmed user right so that he can edit. Somehow, he managed to give himself the bureaucrat role and took away all of our adminships so now we can't stop him. Please block him right away and fix the wiki. PLEASE! It's for our own good.

Permission error

Only a few months ago we had no restrictions on our access to this tool. What has changed and why? And if the change is permanent, can the stewards please delete these spam pages?

ReplaceText Extension Not working properly

For some reason, whenever I try to use the ReplaceText extension on Toxic Fandom & Hatedoms Wiki, I get this error message:

"Error:text replacements cannot be run if $wgCompressRevisions is set to true."

TheChisatoFan Unfortunately, due to the large size of your wiki we had to compress revisions, meaning that the usual "ReplaceText" feature will no longer work on your wiki. Unwanted User Account Creations - Please stop them!

As instructed in https://phabricator.miraheze.org/T5300 that was pronounced invalid, I'm moving the issue here.

RhinosF1 was kind enough to answer some questions, but some remain.

He said these bogus account creations were Miraheze users, probably using spambots and that there was no way to block them but "we take action once we catch them to try and prevent them." So, how can Miraheze be more effective catching an preventing them? Is there anything I can do to help?

I use email verification and reCAPTCHA for account creation. I assumed those two processes would prevent this problem. Why not? Did I do it wrong?

I asked if we would have this problem on a private server instead of a wiki farm. RhinosF1 said it happens to any wiki or public site. But these bogus users are all Miraheze users. Do farm sites enable this misbehavior? Please explain.

Before Miraheze, over the years the Synth DIY Wiki has been on multiple shared hosting servers and has always had the problem of bot registrations. It happens to all wikis. The bots do not originate from Miraheze. If you don't have users confirm email address before they can edit then the bots will also create junk pages, mostly on their own user pages, just to add a spam link. It's pointless doing this because most wikis use nofollow to tell search engines to ignore their links in the rankings. Thanks for letting us know. Perhaps (for now) if editing a declined request, do let the person who declined know. There is a log of updated requests, but this does not always include declined requests, and I personally think that, when editing a declined request, there should be an option for the creator to reopen it. Hi It's Casper. I can see that your permissions seem to have been erroneously edited. It appears that no user group(s) have the necessary read permission, which is why you're seeing the permission error. It also seems that perhaps the managewiki permissions have been removed. Hello Stewards, it seems that i finally decided to catch your attention due to wikis that are bringing up attention to trolls. TFD&HD and Atrocious Youtubers are getting attention from trolls and concerned users alike. Troll communities like Encyclopedia Dramatica made an article about Atrocious Youtubers wiki while mentioning Toxic Fandoms & Hatedoms, and here's some people ranting or explaining the violations on reception wikis. 1 is from the youtuber who said TFD&HD has been violating Fandoms/Wikia for flamebaiting/trollbaiting and 2 from the deviant who claims Miraheze is a terrible community which damaged the reputation of the Miraheze itself generally. --Zirukurt01 (talk) 04:34, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Log in problems in Beidipedia

Hi ....after the migration that happened a while ago , we , the users in beidipedia.miraheze.org are not able to log in , the system doesn't recognize our names or passwards, we have been editing as ip addresses for a while , is there a solution to this problem or we have to create new accounts ?

Can you delete this inactive wiki?

So there is this wiki called horrid reception wiki where it is completely abandoned. The admins are inactive, nobody has edited anything and some of its other wikis are shut down completely. But there is this one user who is "contributing" to the wiki by just changing the names of the inactive users, and not creating pages or editng them. Not to mention that the wiki was very controversial and had a lot of flame wars and harassment. It's best to just delete the wiki. If its other wikis can be deleted, then so can this. Thank you.

To make things clear. First of all, Stewards are not only meant to "just change usernames" they have a much broader role which you can read about on the page that I linked. Secondly, the wiki that you mention is neither closed nor marked as inactive due to the recent renames that you mention. Lastly, since the wiki is marked as private you would not be able to adopt it anyway per the Dormancy Policy. And in regards to deletion, that will only be done once the time defined in the Dormancy Policy has passed, or if the wiki community would request it. — when I try to log into my private wikis, marwiki and nilamwikiubzx217c40wiki. Logging in has already failed many times over almost two hours for both of two Miraheze accounts I have, Drnslyng and Kualeyi522912. Both have at least the Administrator role on nilamwikiubzx217c40wiki and Drnslyng is at least an Administrator on marwiki. Unfortunately, I can't use Phabricator for this bug as I hadn't already linked an account to Phabricator and when I try to do so, the same error occurs.

RfC procedure, not for the first time

Today I criticized User:PiotrGrochowski‎ (banned) for presuming to rewrite the premise of an RfC after users had voted on it. This inspires a separate issue, though: The page is not a Request For Comment; it is a Request For Vote, a ballot. Piotr thought it should be structured differently (RhinosF1 replied that a positive statement, with a chance to agree, disagree, or abstain, is how they have worked forever, and I agree). But as a matter of procedure, there was no opportunity for an idealist with a new concept of balloting to intervene. (There are many more relevant pre-ballot objections to a ballot.) That is, perhaps there should have been an actual RfC, before there was a ballot! that being, on what the wording of the ballot should be. Some ballots, if subjected to this process, would be proved unwise and never progress to a ballot at all. Reception123 has heard me previously suggest that a chance for feedback and cooperative editing should precede the submission of a ballot; he advised me to write...an RfC. I was thinking about becoming active on Lousy Fanfictions Wiki, and I was wondering if I could adopt it; I know it isn't closed, but the founder hasn't edited in about two months. I know it may take a while for this to be answered so I will edit on the wiki whenever I can. There are no other active members, though DuchessSponge5000 recently edited. Are these new accounts all the same user?

What appears to be a set of related userIDs were created within a minute of each other on All The Tropes, which raises a question whether they're from the same user. Another account created a few minutes later seems to be related to the batch, as well. Could somebody run a Checkuser on them, please?

@Reception123: I had configured custom domains on 2018 only. When I last checked these wikis probably on August or September 2019 it was working properly with custom domains. I think the problem is somewhere else because now these wikis are not accessing through their subdomains also.

Login troubles

After the hosting change, I have not been able to log into my wiki. I always get the following error: There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Please resubmit the form.

(non-steward comment) This is a long-standing problem that nobody seems to have been able to solve... if I recall correctly, the problem dates back to the very beginnings of Miraheze itself. Usually, if you just resubmit the form (often times you will have to reenter your password), you will then be logged in. Make sure you do not refresh/reload the page after receiving that error message - just reenter your password if necessary and attempt to login again. Resigning from steward position

Request for wiki 'elliot' to be exempt from inactivity rules

Hi -- I maintain a personal wiki here titled 'elliot' (https://elliot.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page). I use it as sort of a personal wiki where I share my ideas with others. I don't update it super actively though, so I find myself having to re-activate it sometimes. I'm worried that the inactivity rules will allow someone to take control of this wiki if I go 60 days without an edit in the future. Is it possible to make this wiki exempt from the inactivity rules?

Request to get perms back on oldfagdotorg wiki

I created and own the wiki oldfagdotorg, and recently intended to turn it private. I gave other people the bureacrat role, but left the admin role for myself. I didn't realize you couldnt remove other bureaucrats so I removed all their perms, and basically locked the wiki in on itself as now no one has the perms to manage it. Can someone fix this by readding perms to bureaucrat?

Requesting bureaucrat rights on Template Wiki

Back in Jan 2018 I asked for a Miraheze template repository. MacFan4000 set it up. Understandably I was only given administrator rights not bureaucrat. That has been manageable, whenever some bureaucrat operation has been needed I'd request MacFan4000 to implement it. Now MacFan4000 seems to be dormant and I'd like Pppery to be given administrator on the grounds that he has been doing some fine work on the wiki and it would be useful for him to have access to those extra functions, e.g. Special:ReplaceText. Problem with inactive admin user and wiki being closed.

I'm new to wiki editing so a friend created this wiki obscurantia.miraheze.org like a template with the documentation I gave him and then he gave me the administrative rights so I can edit the content and learn also from it. This wiki is about my works and projects, it's the documentation of it and I made new content recently. Now I have a message that says this wiki will be closed in 15 days and will become eligible for adoption for inactivity even if I do make changes. I would like to adopt this wiki if it's possible. Global user pages on Miraheze Login wiki

I've noticed several problems on Miraheze Login wiki, which are listed as follows:

  1. Special:ListUsers shows that we have no users afforded any privileges or user rights beyond the default registered 'user' right. This, in turn, is creating problems with users who don't have global wiki administrative user rights from creating global user pages. I'm thinking of proposing that global sysops, CVT team members, stewards, and system administrators appointed via the Miraheze Meta wiki be given the same privileges on Miraheze Login, but would it also make sense to have Miraheze local Administrators be given this right as well? It does seem logical to me, given that Miraheze Login is so closely tied in with Miraheze Meta and doesn't really have any separate pages.

Thus, while trying to create my global user page, I triggered an abuse filter related to external links, which prompted me to enter a CAPTCHA challenge. However, passing that CAPTCHA challenge did not let me post my user page. So, should we either:

  1. Fix the above problem to allow users to bypass the abuse filter upon successfully passing the CAPTCHA challenge;
  2. Automatically extend the user's Miraheze Meta user rights to Miraheze Login, allowing a user to request, via Miraheze Meta, additional privileges to create a global user page on Miraheze Login;
  3. Automatically add the 'autoconfirmed' and/or 'autopatrolled' permissions on Miraheze Login and have our counter vandalism teams patrol recently created global user pages; or,
  4. Something else.

I was able to create User:Dmehus on Miraheze Login by removing the external links first, and then re-adding them back and passing the CAPTCHA. So, I think it's a problem with the "external links in user pages" in the global abusefilter whereby passing the CAPTCHA challenge doesn't work when the abuse filter is triggered on page creation but not when triggered on edit. So, at minimum, that needs to be fixed. Also, can we please enable file uploads on Miraheze Login wiki so all Miraheze users can insert their profile picture when using the Template:User info template on Miraheze Login?   1. Global sysops and CVT are two names for the same thing (the group was recently renamed and refocused)
  2. Global sysops/CVT, stewards, and sysadmins already have rights on Loginwiki, as those are global groups and thus applly to all wikis.
  3. Is there really enough need for admin actions on loginwiki to merit this proposal, especially given that there are only 3 non-bot users (Revi, MrJaroslavik, Pup) who are admins on meta and are not global sysops, stewards, or sysadmins, and one of them has an open request for global sysop-ship that is very likely to pass, and another one of them is inactive?
  4. Local file uploads should not be enabled on loginwiki, as files are not "[the main page], copyrights page, minimal redirects, user pages, and necessary user box templates.", as per mh:login:Main Page. Any relevant files should be uploaded to Miraheze Commons or Wikimedia Commons instead.
  5. The only valid point in this proposal is that it may make sense to set $wgAutoConfirmCount to zero on loginwiki (thereby meaning that users automatically become autoconfirmed after a certain period of time, without requiring any edits), since there's no reason to expect users to make a significant number of edits there.

@Pppery: Thanks for the reply, and for clarifying the history of CVT and Global Sysops. Regarding the first two points, indeed, I realized now that Global Sysops and Stewards had global rights on the "loginwiki," but just didn't have them defined locally. So, you're right, there's no need to take any action with those. In regards to the third point, that'd be a separate proposal, but I was just trying to throw some ideas out as possible solutions. Regarding the fourth point, indeed, after checking out RhinosF1's user profile again, I see he's sourcing his photo from the Wikimedia Commons, so that's not a huge deal, though perhaps we may want to modify the "loginwiki" interface to integrate either Miraheze Commons or the Wikimedia Commons to the "upload" button? There's probably some sort of extension that allows us to do this, eh? As to the last point, yeah, that would work. I think that's the easiest solution. As long we have various Global Sysops and Stewards patrolling the recent changes on "loginwiki," we should be able to catch problematic user pages fairly quickly. The abuse filter isn't meant to cause a captcha, that's just the regular behavior for including external links. I've exempted the sites you were including in the filter, but I'll let you in on the not-well kept secret that a few edits to the wiki in question will allow you to bypass the filter (without needing any rights). -- Void Whispers 20:52, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

As to the suggestion, yeah, I totally realized I could've done that, but was just thinking along the lines of Pppery that it is unlikely most users will have more than a few edits since Login wiki is a single-purpose wiki for hosting global user pages and was just thinking it'd be better to be proactive by trying to head off any questions from confused users. Cannot log in nor create a new account, rawdata.miraheze.org

My system:

  • Windows 10 (new PC)
  • Firefox v77 with some plugins but nothing that I know would be blocking miraheze.org
  • ISP is AT&T


Hello, I'm the user 'bulrush' on this site. I cannot log into that user, I thought 'bulrush' might have been expired or blocked, perhaps it had been hacked. So when I tried to create a new username, I cannot create a username. Here's the error I get for both logging in and creating a new user.

There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Please resubmit the form.

There's just no info in the error message above if cookies are blocked, or something else is blocked.

So I made sure to whitelist this site and the rawdata.miraheze.org site (the site I'm trying to log into) on Ublock Origins, and I still get the same error. I'm not even using a VPN which can sometimes cause problems.

Even when I did the process for "forgot my password" I still could not log in.

Anyone know how I can get my old username 'bulrush' back? Or get my old wiki back at http://rawdata.miraheze.org?

UPDATED: Ok I fixed this. Here are the steps. It was a cookie issue. This was a new PC and I think the newer Firefox blocks cookies by default, along with a lot of other things. This was not a problem on older Firefox versions.

  1. Go to Firefox Options
  2. Go to Privacy and Security. Then go to Cookies and Site Data.
  3. Click Manage Data. Delete all cookies related to Miraheze.org.
  4. Click Manage Permissions which is near "Manage Data" button. Enter domain "miraheze.org" for which to allow cookies, click Allow button.
  5. Get out of options.
  6. Close Firefox completely, all tabs and windows.
  7. Open Firefox again. Go to site in question.

Admins, can you put this error message and the steps to fix it in a FAQ?

@Bulrush: Glad you got it working. Sounds like it was a cookie conflict that wasn't letting you login. At first, I thought you'd forgotten your password for your Bulrush account. If that had been the case, then I was going to ask whether you had an e-mail address to which you still had access attached to your account as I wasn't seeing any local or global blocks for that that account. To anyone that finds this thread, that's another advantage to registering an e-mail address with your Miraheze account.
As to putting this into a frequently asked question page, that's possible. It's not a policy that usually requires a brief discussion on-wiki, so any editor(s) can create the page. @RhinosF1: You're a local Meta administrator on this wiki; I have seen log entries for hiding IP addresses when a user has confirmed to have edited while logged out, the IP address is suppressed to non-admins. Find pages without a certain category?

It's currently not possible (AFAIK) to export all pages in a given wiki to back them up, so I have assigned the category "All" to most of my pages, but some may have been skipped and thus do not get backed up. Is there a way to find pages in rawdata.miraheze.org that do not have the category "All"?

@Bulrush: Have you tried Special:AllPages? You can filter by namespace, user, and other parameters. It's what I use for wiki navigation on Miraheze and Public Test Wiki, where I am most active. Dmehus (talk) 15:53, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
@Dmehus: On the export page do you want me to enter in the category box, "Special:AllPages" to back up all my pages? Is that what you mean? The Export pages wants me to enter in a category to export, then click the Add button which will add those pages that have that category, to the list box below the Add button. And entering a category of "Special:AllPages" did not provide any pages in the list box below the category text box when I clicked the Add button. (edit conflict) @Bulrush: Oh, sorry, I guess I misunderstood what you were asking. I thought you were asking about a way to find pages (that are readable at your permission level) on a wiki. Special:AllPages is what I use for that. What you're talking about is a wiki export; I know there are mirrors of Wikipedia wikis, but that's because Wikimedia makes available database dumps of their wikis on a continuous basis. So, you'd have to talk to the wiki owner about requesting a copy of their database, I would think. Dmehus (talk) 16:04, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
@Bulrush: Since it's your own wiki, I was hoping there would be an admin tool you could use on-wiki, but it seems like the MediaWiki manual (Manual:Backing up a wiki#Backup the content of the wiki (XML dump)) shows that you have to have command-line access, though there is a third-party tool called WikiTeam, for which it links to a tutorial. You could also ask a system administrator or possibly a steward to do this for you, which, in this case, you've come to the right place. Dmehus (talk) 16:13, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
@Bulrush: Looking at imports, it looks like you'll need a system administrator to do an XML database dump of "rawdata" wiki. If you don't receive a reply here within a couple business days, I would recommend either (a) reaching out to one of them on their user talk page on this wiki or (b) contacting them via direct message on IRC or Discord. @Pppery: I would just like anything to backup all my wiki pages, which I can import into the wiki of something bad happens. Special:Export does do an XML dump. I just can't find a way to grab all pages without giving each one a category of "All". Bulrush (talk) 21:28, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
@Bulrush: I'm not personally familiar with that particular extension that @Pppery: identified, but from reading the documentation page about it, it looks like it would allow you to export, in one swoop, an entire export of your wiki in an XML file (which you can use to have re-imported by a system administrator, should your wiki ever be deleted). If you can access Special:DataDump on your wiki, that means it's installed by default. Otherwise, you will need to install it (provided Miraheze lets users install extensions on their own wikis). DataDump is installed by default. See Backups#Backups of a wiki.
Miraheze lets users install extensions on their own wikis with some limitations; each extension has to be manually pre-approved before it can be enabled on any wiki, whereupon local users can enable it via "Special:ManageWiki/extensions". Pppery, thank you. That's helpful to know. I hadn't seen that backups information page on this wiki; I'd seen Manual:Backing up a wiki#Backup the content of the wiki (XML dump) on the MediaWiki wiki, which is helpful from an instructional standpoint when setting up one's wiki, especially in self-hosted scenarios. It sounds like, other than private user information (i.e., e-mail addresses, passwords, personal settings, etc.) and the copyright licensing under which content was submitted by users, it should indeed serve Bulrush's needs fully. It would actually be giving him a fuller backup than manually exporting the pages from each namespace, tagged with their [[Category:All]] category. Dmehus (talk) 23:10, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Ok all, is the Special:DataDump generated file something I can import to this MediaWiki or another MediaWiki in an emergency? Special:DataDump creates a .gz compressed file and I think 7zip handles .gz files on my Windows side. My point was to make a backup that could later be imported into MediaWiki again. @Bulrush: Yep, you simply uncompress the file, and the XML file(s) would be in there for you to import into another MediaWiki installation, hosted by Miraheze, elsewhere, or that you would self host. I haven't tested it myself as I haven't set up a private or public wiki yet (though I have a couple ideas in my mind). As the page that Pppery linked to notes, it would just not contain the private user data (i.e., e-mail addresses, personal settings, passwords, and IP addresses) and CreativeCommons copyright licensing version attached to the contributions. The former is not essential as the revisions would still note the names of the users that contributed each revision just like when you use Special:Export and Special:Import. In terms of the latter, just make a note somewhere that the contributions to your wiki were using CC Attribution/ShareAlike 4.0, and you could re-add a notice on your recreated wiki (perhaps your "copyright" page would be a good place for that) that contributions up to date were contributed under that CC version (in the event of a change). Increase wiki user privileges

I'm one of the users responsible for the wiki for the game: https://fapceo.miraheze.org/ The user that created it and has the only Administrator privileges User:Betwixt is not active and is not working anymore (afaik) for the company that oversights the game, he was one of the Community Managers. We have 0 contacts with him for some time already. We discussed the matter on our Discord server (can be found on the bottom of the main wiki page) with other Community Managers and Moderators about it and we would like to request to grant Administrator privilege and Bureaucrat if possible to the new CM that oversees the game User:Snakeintheeye and Administrator privilege if Snakeintheeye cannot receive a Bureaucrat to the main Moderators User:Groxy or User:Cc (all of them are also present in the Discord server if necessary)

@Delgon: I had a look at this thread when I saw that the archiving bot had just archived the threads above it. I had a look at the wiki in question, and, indeed, I do see that Betwixt is the only bureaucrat and administrator. Since the Dormancy Policy says that wikis without edits and log actions may be adopted, and since the wiki is active, in no small part due to the efforts of you and the other users, it won't go dormant. This seems like an oversight in the Dormancy Policy that may need to be corrected. Stewards and Global Sysops can assist with managing the wiki when there's no response from the local wiki administrators, but if the wiki creator never returns, that effectively puts the wiki under a permanent conservatorship of the Stewards (kind of like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac). I'm going to {{ping}} @Void:, one of the Stewards here, and see what, if anything, we can do in this scenario and whether such a change to the Dormancy Policy will require a full community vote. If it does, I'd vote for any procedural amendments in a heartbeat. Dmehus (talk) 00:20, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
