Global rights

Hello, as of recent spam incidents and so I am curious to know what other global rights will we have on Miraheze except Steward/Sysadmin. Will we have Global sysops/rollbackers to combat vandalism? --Reception123 (talk) 08:08, 12 August 2015 (EDT)

Interwiki

@John: @Southparkfan: I have noticed a interwiki issues, as when I link meta from another wiki (e.g. Meta:Miraheze) it does not work. I think there is a problem with the interwiki table. --Reception123 (talk) 15:17, 12 August 2015 (EDT)

The inter wiki table is fine and functions as should. Meta is not an inter wiki link however. Wikis are also not automatically added to the table. John (talk) 15:51, 12 August 2015 (EDT)
@John: I'd add "https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/$1" to the interwiki table but I can't figure out how to edit it. Do I not have permissions? It would be nice if at least meta was working. Also John, the edited Wikipedia link is the only link that actually works.. wikipedia:Borderlands 2 wikia:Hi theopedia:Test. Only Wikipedia works. Others used to not work after being added but all three of these appear to work. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 04:11, 13 August 2015 (EDT)
Yes indeed, I tried to edit but have no idea how/don't have permissions. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 04:32, 13 August 2015 (EDT)
Only stewards can right now though it should be delegated to metawiki sysops. John (talk) 08:00, 13 August 2015 (EDT)
@John: Could you add ("https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/$1") for Meta: ? --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 08:39, 13 August 2015 (EDT)
I'm deferring from doing non urgent things apart from commenting until I'm actually home. John (talk) 11:32, 13 August 2015 (EDT)
I've set up "m:" as a prefix (m:Stewards' noticeboard) and taken "metawiki:" for us instead of redirecting it elsewhere (metawiki:Stewards' noticeboard). Anything else? John (talk) 10:30, 15 August 2015 (EDT)
Apologies for butting into your conversation, but I have an Interwiki request. I am delighted with the existing large Interwiki table. Could you also add a "w:" alternate interwiki prefix for Wikipedia, please? I am already finding that I link far more to Wikipedia that to any of the other possibilities, and I imagine this will the case for many wikis here. SeekTruthFromFacts (talk) 20:14, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
@SeekTruthFromFacts:  Done as it's probably the most-used "w" site, I've gone ahead and added it at Special:Interwiki. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 21:29, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
No, thank you very much @NDKilla: SeekTruthFromFacts (talk) 22:05, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Permissions to access my wiki

I´ve requested to create a wiki that was returned as "Done", but I don't have access to read or edit it.

My user is: Gestao.damil

wiki: damil.miraheze.org

Also, can I have permissions to give read rights to new users in my wiki?

@Gestao.damil: per the following you should have all mentioned permissions. (At least reading and assigning groups. I'm not sure how private wiki membership works yet.)
August 13, 2015 (User rights log); 20:45 . . Southparkfan (Talk | contribs | block) changed group membership for User:Gestao.damil@damilwiki from (none) to administrator and bureaucrat ‎(Founder rights)
-- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 15:32, 14 August 2015 (EDT)
Yes, indeed. Member assigning does not work yet but should be set up very soon. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 00:13, 15 August 2015 (EDT)
Hi, while we're still experimenting with a set up which provides ease of use for the user and efficiency with the code, some things do lack the best functionality. The member user group is how you can allow others to read the wiki only with no extended privileges unless you build on that. Currently the group is not assignable by administrators though I will fix that later today in my final look over. Administrators should be able to read the wiki although as pointed out - they can't. That will also be fixed although for now I have given you the member user group which allows you to read the wiki. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions or concerns, John (talk) 05:49, 15 August 2015 (EDT)

Rename Test Wiki to TestWiki

Could you please renane Test Wiki to TestWiki? And speaking about this I don't think im going to be the only one that wants a rename, so we need to start thinking about CreateWiki configs as well. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 02:26, 16 August 2015 (EDT)

Done. John (talk) 11:45, 16 August 2015 (EDT)
Thank you. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 11:46, 16 August 2015 (EDT)

I don't appear to have administrator rights on my wiki

Thanks so much for making my wiki, I'm really excited to get started on it! There is a small issue however and that issue is not being able to view a majority of the pages (except for the main one) due to incorrect permissions, so I believe this means I'm not an administrator of the wiki yet.

Hi, I've just assigned you sysop and bureaucrat rights on the wiki. We had an issue where rights were not automatically assigned though I have now fixed that. Sorry for the issue, hope you enjoy the service we provide! John (talk) 15:05, 16 August 2015 (EDT)
Thank you! Megumi-Sensei

I am likewise excited to get started on my wiki, but I don't appear to have permission to edit aka. founder/administration rights. Should I have been granted the rights automatically, or should I expect a longer waiting period? Looking forward to trying out the service, thank you. Vana

Sorry. There is currently an issue with generic account creation with the extension used to make wikis. I have assigned the appropriate rights to your account now however. Thanks, John (talk) 13:31, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

I also do not have administrator rights on my wiki (linux.miraheze.org). Can you please assist? Thank you. Jsmith (talk) 17:41, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

Done. John (talk) 17:42, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

Can't edit wiki

Hi! I'm really sorry to be writing out another topic, but I just realized the full issue. I didn't have administrator privileges on the wiki, but I just found I don't have member privileges as well so I can't create and edit pages on my wiki.

Hi, you helped point out to me an over complication in the design and implementation of private wikis. Administrators should be able to edit and read wikis without the member group (in theory everyone should be able to edit, but they can't because they lack read). In the configuration - it seems these rights were revoked from every group and only given to members which is unnecessary. You should be able to do everything now. Sorry for the issues but your reporting of these issues are essential to the development of the service provided by us. John (talk) 16:38, 16 August 2015 (EDT)
Thank you so much. I had been wondering if I did something wrong at first, but I'm glad the issue was taken care of, it's very much appreciated! ^_^ Megumi-Sensei (talk) 16:51, 16 August 2015 (EDT)
@Megumi-Sensei: Member should now be assignable. Enjoy. John (talk) 17:23, 16 August 2015 (EDT)

@John: @Southparkfan: Hello, all pages that I have created on the test wiki, (except main page) are "deleted" but there is no log nothing. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 02:28, 17 August 2015 (EDT)

Hello, I created a wiki and I got this error message "The founder user was not promoted on the wiki" --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 02:47, 17 August 2015 (EDT).

!! Non-wiki creator and IP (possibly) can use Special:CreateWiki !!

@JohnFLewis: @Southparkfan: I tested creating a wiki with an example account (test1wiki) and it worked! I didn't test but when im logged out I see the Special:CreateWiki page (before it said to log in). I think this is a little security issue. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 04:38, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

Fixed a few hours ago. Southparkfan (talk) 07:57, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

Whitlisting main pages of private wikis

Hello, I think that private wiki's mainpages should be whitelisted, as it's not a really good approach for a user to see that he's not allowed to edit the page. It also would be good for the mainpage to be public, so users can have a summary about what the wiki is about. I cannot think of other reasons but there probably are more. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 17:08, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

They should be already. John (talk) 17:09, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
I asked SPF and he just answered me "They're not.", so I thought they weren't supposed to be. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 17:10, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
Works now. Seems to be  Resolved --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 17:13, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

Bug related to multiple sections with the same name

I have a page with three headings named "Criticisms" (all level 3 headings). The internal links are #Criticisms, #Criticisms_2, #Criticisms_3. When I edit #Criticisms_3, upon saving it takes me to #Criticisms. It should take me to #Criticisms_3. Elliotolds (talk) 21:40, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

This is a long-standing MediaWiki issue. Wynter (talk) 04:49, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

How is this being financed?

There is no such thing as a free lunch, right?! This seems too generous to be true, so how do you propose to finance the hosting? And is there a back story? Were you frustrated that there was nowhere to put your wiki on Antiguan calypso and decided that you need a calypso spirit of sharing? My guess is probably wrong, but perhaps the founders could share your ideas and ideals in the FAQ. (I tried to post this on the FAQ Talk page but it was lost in an edit conflict) SeekTruthFromFacts (talk) 12:18, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

Hello, the founders are pretty busy at the time, but maybe they will respond at a later moment. I am here since Miraheze started, basically, we get financed by donations. John and Southparkfan wanted to make a wiki that had more clear goals than Orain, and possibly a better response time. The rest I will let John and Southparkfan answer fully when they have time. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 15:12, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
You can find an answer in our FAQ now. Southparkfan (talk) 15:14, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
Thank you; I think this is a helpful addition to the FAQ. SeekTruthFromFacts (talk) 12:43, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Uoops, I've set wrong Language!

Sorry about that I left that section, but I just forgot set Language to ko - 한국어 instead of the default value(en - English) in my request. I'm not sure it's possible but may I ask you to fix the Language blank to ko - 한국어? Sorry about that! --Lagoon (talk) 09:30, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

Sure, will change it to ko. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 11:13, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, User:Reception123! Thanks for letting know that you have checked my request! However, seems I didn't get any right in there, would you like to check it if possible? Thanks so much! X) --Lagoon (talk) 11:20, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

Wiki creator

Hello, I would like to apply as a wiki creator. For users who don't know me, I am TheTVFan and I come from Italy. I joined Miraheze in September 2015. In the past, I was bureaucrat and administrator of TestWiki and founder of Serie TV Wiki on Orain.
I would like to become a wiki creator to help users creating new wikis and expand the world of Miraheze.
Best regards, --TheTVFan (talk) 10:35, 20 September 2015 (UTC)

Why not? We do need as many wiki creators as possible. Preferably come on IRC and talk to us. And please read this Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 11:23, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
I havre read the page and joined you in the IRC channel. --TheTVFan (talk) 12:17, 20 September 2015 (UTC)

Cannot find wiki I created, oops, it just takes a few minutes

Hi, new user here. I'm familiar with editing wikis but not creating a wiki on your site. I created a wiki called rawdata.miraheze.org and I assumed I could get to the first page via https://rawdata.miraheze.org, but when I go there I get... nevermind. It appears to take about 5 minutes to create the page after I confirm my email. Sorry! I'm sure this will be helpful to other new users though. Bulrush (talk) 11:54, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

How do I make my wiki read-only by everyone but me?

How do I set up permissions like that? On my initial creation of the wiki, I set it to "public", but it wasn't clear what that means as far as reading and editing. I just want to be able to edit it but let anyone else read it. I'd also like to later add an occasional user to help me with edits.

It will be made public soon, please be patient. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 15:01, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
Seems it was already done. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 15:03, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
I checked the permissions on my wiki https://rawdata.miraheze.org. Looks like anyone can edit, move, or delete stuff. How do I remove those permissions? Bulrush (talk) 11:15, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
@Bulrush: open a feature request describing the changes you want. Do you want anonymous editing disabled or do you want to be the only one able to edit? Also, by default, not anyone can delete stuff. (assuming you mean delete pages, revisions, or logs.. anyone can edit a page and redact content but it shows up in the history) Only administrators have the delete permission. By default though, anyone can edit pages and all logged in users can move pages. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 13:10, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
I figured it out.
  1. Log in to the wiki.
  2. Go to the main page, at the top click the More button and a menu will drop down. Click Change Protection.
  3. Under the Edit box, click Allow Only Administrators.
  4. Scroll down and check Protect Pages included in this Page (cascading protection)
  5. Click Confirm button.
  6. You're done! Bulrush (talk) 22:59, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Rename wiki

(Farmer log); 14:02 . . NDKilla (Talk | contribs | block) created the wiki "catboxwiki" ‎(Gather ideas for a possible webcomic)

@John: / @Southparkfan: Accidentally created this with no 'sitename' (I goofed and thought this was only used when using a custom domain..) so now {{SITENAME}} on my wiki shows nothing. Could this be changed to "CatBox" (to simply match the url). Thanks! -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 12:08, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

Search isn't working

"A database query error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software.

Hi, we're aware. The other root user is doing some long term importing work is causing continuous crashes on the searchindex tables of all wikis. Unfortunately it can not be fixed until they're done otherwise it would keep reoccurring. Thanks, John (talk) 20:28, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

How do I put a counter on my wiki pages?

Since the wiki does not seem to support HTML, how do I put a (page view) counter on each page? I just want to start by putting a counter on the main page. Thanks! Bulrush (talk) 12:00, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

[[Special:Statistics|{{NUMBEROFARTICLES}}]] adds an article number with a link to the statistics page at Special:Statistics. Aryamanarora (talk) 12:51, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll give it a try. Bulrush (talk) 17:53, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
Keep in mind that an article is counted only if it has a wikilink to another article. Wynter (talk) 19:12, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
@Wynter and @Aryamanarora, I was looking for a page view counter. Sorry for the confusion. Is there a way to do that? Bulrush (talk) 10:20, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
Page view counting was removed in MediaWiki 1.25, but a new extension called HitCounters provides this functionality. Wynter (talk) 18:27, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
Sysadmins have decided to not add this extension. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 18:33, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
Where did they say this? Wynter (talk) 21:20, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
@Wynter: SPF said this on IRC. I'm not exactly sure why but something to do with hitcounters drastically reducing wiki performance. (Hence I think this feature used to exist in mediawiki core but was removed.. maybe I'm mistaken and just used to use this extension). Sorry for any inconveniences this causes. I will also invite @Southparkfan and John: to confirm this. -- Cheers, NDKilla ( TalkContribs ) 23:22, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
That feature was removed from core in 1.25, and view counter will reduce perfomance of wikis with some level of visitors/articles. — revi 03:22, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

Recreating wiki from Orain backups

@Southparkfan: Hi, I would like to recreate the wiki I had over at orain. I hear that you only have backups from 3months ago..be it bad luck: Our wiki was created roughly 3 months ago; therefore, I fear not much content will be available on the backup. We had major content additions in late June and Early August.

Whoops! Wiki was izanagi.orain.org

Anyways... If there is sufficient content on the backup, we would like to start it back up (could you check?) If not, we'd rather ditch the project. Thank you for your continued service!
(PS: I was directed to you by Addshore)
Oberyn (talk)

I found the backup of your wiki. If you request a wiki, I'll handle the import. Southparkfan (talk) 12:50, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

@Southparkfan: It's great that you found it. The wiki has been created: Izanagi Online Wiki. Let's see how much are in those backups.. Thanks! Oberyn (talk)

Thank you for all your helps. Unfortunately, the backup doesn't contain any aspect of the "current" wiki. Kindly let me know if you are able to recover any more-recent backups... Till then... Thanks! Oberyn (talk)

@Oberyn: Sorry, but that is the most recent backup we have. If we get another one or if Orain recover data we will let you know. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 11:28, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Table of Contents not on subpages, only main page

The TOC only appears on my main page, not any sub pages. How do I get the TOC to appear on every subpage? Thank you. Bulrush (talk) 14:12, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

The TOC should appear automatically on any page that has at least four headers. If you want to manually force the TOC to appear on any page, use the magic word __FORCETOC__. Wynter (talk) 16:15, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
It works! Thanks. Bulrush (talk) 19:02, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

Where can a new wiki creation be followed?

I requested a new wiki, right.miraheze.org. Where can I follow up,if the wiki gets created?
If possible, that wiki should be a backup of orain's right.orain.org. Fiala (talk) 20:53, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

@Southparkfan: Please see about the backup. You should get a message on your talkpage when the wiki gets created. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 10:24, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Dormant wikis policy

Hello everyone, as we are yet approaching the date when some wikis will become inactive per the current dormancy policy draft, I propose that we decide if it should be made an official policy. If so we should start the procedures for closing and deleting wikis. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 16:19, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

Support closing inactive wikis and making it an official policy. --TheTVFan (talk) 16:34, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
Too early, I think. — revi 03:20, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
The stuff I'm writing in my wiki will be useful for years to come, and sometimes I get real busy at work and don't log in for 6 months. Can we extend the dormancy cutoff to 6 months or so? Otherwise I'll just have to find another provider. Bulrush (talk) 11:12, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
I also agree that 60 days is too short. I rather propose to run inactivity cleanup every 3 or 6 months or such mechanism. — revi 14:22, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

User rights

I do not have permissions to assign Special:UserRights and I think that is the way to add other users to UnDisConnect as administrators? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lilith (talkcontribs)

"Skipcaptcha" right

According to Special:ListGroupRights, the only users with the "skipcaptcha" right are "autopatrolled" users, bots, and "confirmed" users, and sysops. This means that the only users who may skip the CAPTCHA are those who are noticed by and promoted by sysops. Currently, Miraheze's "autoconfirmed" users don't possess to the "skipcaptcha" right. This isn't very different from the default configuration. Wikipedia differs from this default by allowing its "autoconfirmed" users to possess the "skipcaptcha" right. This means that Wikipedians, instead of waiting for a sysop to notice them, can earn the "skipcaptcha" right through time and effort.

I've seen an user here complain about CAPTCHA's, so I propose that we follow Wikipedia's example and allow unnoticed users to earn the "skipcaptcha" right by assigning the right to the "autoconfirmed" group for all Miraheze wikis. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 17:25, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

I support this. They're not in English either. Daemon (talk) 17:37, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

Neo-Nazi holocaust deniers trying to host a wiki!

Rightpedia are wanting to host their wiki with you. They formerly were with Orain, you can read about them here:

When Orain hosted Rightpedia they received multiple legal complaints. Not only is Rightpedia's content anti-Semitic and extremely racist (e.g. calling Jews parasites, blacks ugly, denying the Holocaust etc.), but also posts libel and slander against anti-racism activists. Rightpedia was also linked to perverts and other obscene people (e.g. members there posted about raping Jewish women).

I really hope you don't go through and host Rightpedia.Tinbox (talk) 08:02, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

This is either Michael D Suarez (alias JuniusThaddeus) or Oliver Smith (alias Atlantid). These two went around trolling on Orain, trying to make trouble for it, and vandalizing. No one else even cares about Rightpedia. No one else beside a handful of people are aware of it or even read it. The JIDF doesn't even notice it or care. The "multiple legal complaints" in reality means Suarez and Smith sending in complaints and no one else. The "Rightpedia was also linked to perverts and other obscene people (e.g. members there posted about raping Jewish women)." The "posts libel and slander against anti-racism activists" is untrue, they're just heavily criticized, of course you could call the stuff "Tinbox" linked to libel and slander to if you compare it that way. Rightpedia is a very alternative view site: correcting mistruths (eg. about Ben Garrison who's libelled a lot), alternative views from the media (e.g. GMO is bad, mass immigration is genocide, Donald Trump is smart but secretly a Zionist) and alternative history (eg. The Allied of WWII were the villains, Jews persecute people and were not victims). Although I would say you should be cautious of hosting it. All that bad stuff about Jews you think isn't true until you see them come after you then you realize it's true. But more importantly, I think the site people already are familiar with it and didn't want to make it. I think the site should get its own domain and host personally and quit using wikis. By the way reCAPTCHA was a real pain in the ass to sign up for the site. First disable all security so the popup works and then have to go through lots of blurry photographs that were made poorly. I'm not that much arguing anything except that "Tinbox" is a troll and is either Suarez or Smith. No one else knows or cares about Rightpedia who opposes it--and what's worse there's so much good alternative media stuff that it should all be put into a wiki but not enough people interested and when they are, they have a very narrow focus. People are unaware of so much, they don't even know basic things like Windows 10 is major spyware. And the public view of history honors villains as heroes and condemns heroes as villains -- it's how life is -- good people don't win and bad people say what's history and what's true. Wyatt (talk) 08:54, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
I'm neither approving nor declining the request but the requirements for closing wiki from senior sysadmin is "Contents is illegal in 1)United States and/or 2) Netherlands". I don't know US code nor Netherlands law. — revi 10:52, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
"Wyatt" is "A Wyatt Man" a sysop from Right.Origin (Rightpedia) when it was online. Fortunately, posts were archived from Rightpedia, which show Wyatt to be a liar, e.g. legal complaints were received (these had nothing to do with "JuniusThaddeus" or "Atlantid") which resulted in "local steward action" by Orain staff. The libelous posts in question, were writing malicious false content and smears about anti-racist and human rights activists such as Shane Ruttle Martinez, who is this guy. Fiala1's main method of attack is to just slander any anti-racist activists, including lawyers like Martinez, as child molesters, homosexuals (even when they are hetero) or oddly as Jews (when in the case of Martinez his background is Hispanic) when there is absolutely no evidence for these accusations for the individual pages they created to harass and post libel. Tinbox (talk) 12:21, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
The important point is, as I said, Miraheze staffs need a clear evidence that they violate US Code and/or Netherlands law, and (again) I do not know US Code nor Netherlands law, so I cannot determine from archive.is link. Also, receiving legal complaints does not mean it is illegal, it is the area of judge to decide whether it is legal or not. If you have specific articles you find they violates US code/Netherlands law, I will bring this up to other staffs.
TL;DR: You need proof that they violate US Code (because our hosting service company is based on US) and/or netherlands law (because our physical server is located in Netherlands). — revi 12:32, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
Re: Tinbox. This just proves that you were behind that "complaint" too. You impersonate people. Every complaint everywhere on the internet was by Michael Suarez and Oliver Smith, whichever one you are. No one even is aware Rightpedia exists at all except the people those two told -- it's actually sad, no one is aware of the site. Wyatt (talk) 12:34, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
Re: Revi, I'm trying to convince Fiala to go with paid hosting. Wyatt (talk) 12:34, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
"You impersonate people. Every complaint everywhere on the internet was by Michael Suarez and Oliver Smith" -- take your meds, please. You're the same loon that denies the Holocaust and claims Wikipedia, even Metapedia is run by Mossad. It wasn't only two individuals complaining about the libel, abuse and sickening anti-Semitism at Rightpedia.Tinbox (talk) 14:13, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
I'm not "Tinbox". Tinbox is likely Krom[scape]. Wyatt's claims of "no one even is aware Rightpedia exists at all except the people those two told -- it's actually sad, no one is aware of the site" is ludicrous. Simple searches reveal the truth:
--Michaeldsuarez (talk) 18:30, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

Comment. I don't think any wiki farm should host Rightpedia. It is a hate site, pure and simple. I suggest something similar to Shoutwiki's content policy:

Rightpedia wasn't unpopular because it wasn't advertised. Follow those links just above, and you will see Rightpedia discussed on Apricity, Anthroscape, and other racial-orientated forums. The reason it was unpopular was because Hu1 and Mikemikev are both known as notorious trolls. Someone even posted on Apricity they would have joined Rightpedia, if Mikemikev wasn't an admin there.Tinbox (talk) 14:34, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
Rightpedia advertisement at Beer Barrel failure:
http://thebeerbarrel.net/threads/new-encyclopedia.30798/

The only response Mikemikev got to advertising: "Seriously, you fucking halfwitted loser; can't you find ANYTHING better to do than spending every waking hour trolling forums and wikis?" and "You are a lonely, creepy loser who infests dozens -if not hundreds- of chat forums and internet encyclopedias" lol.Tinbox (talk) 14:45, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

We are providing obviously deep truth, if it wakes such deep hatred and smear campaign in the haters of truth and light. The same was the situation at Jesus Christ's time. Fiala (talk) 07:05, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

Deep truth? You mean like how Wyatt Man added to Rightpedia that 'black Africans' are closer genetically to chimpanzees, than 'whites'? and are not human? Wyatt Man's racist trolling was even considered too extreme for the Nazis over at Stormfront, with a Wyatt man even called a crackpot there.[1].Tinbox (talk) 15:20, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

This completely groundless hatred and smear campaign by Michael D Suarez (alias JuniusThaddeus) and Oliver Smith (alias Atlantid). Fiala (talk) 20:55, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

@Michael D Suarez, @Oliver Smith: For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44 Fiala (talk) 09:14, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

I know the truth. You're as anti-Semitic as they come:
You simply can't handle the idea of people in tune with the facts viewing you negatively.
Plus, it is you who hates the truth:
--Michaeldsuarez (talk) 23:27, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

@Michaeldsuarez: Exactly your words are the words of devil, who hates the truth and light. Fiala (talk) 09:13, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Fiala1, miraheze apparently aren't going to host your anti-Semitic pro-hitler wiki that slanders innocent people, so you should just leave here now.Tinbox (talk) 13:19, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

@OliverSmith (Tinbox):Exactly your words are the words of devil, who hates the truth and light. Who do you believe you are, to speak in name of miraheze.org? Fiala (talk) 14:07, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Decision

After looking over the above, I am taking a decision myself to decline hosting of rightwiki. Formally at Orain, I did not mind or bother about the wiki simply because it was not my responsibility. Here, it is. I am basing the decision on two reasons:

  1. The idea of the wiki seems to be simply supporting Neo-Nazism and the ideals of the Nazi party. While I support the idea of free speech, limits have to be placed and I place the limits here. While no laws directly prohibit it, there is a universal (or fairly common) idea that this topic should be moot.
  2. The discussion is never-ending and is going no-where besides a place of auto-correcting words to jumble a sentence up to present to people to support the 'get out of this debate'. So as above, this needs to come to an end.

Of course, this decision is not a whole one of Miraheze (no one was actually consulted on this), this is my decision as the person who is responsible for the project. It can be overridden via the usual methods (community consensus) assuming no one does the research for me and finds exact laws and links them reliability which moots this being overridden at all.

Thanks, John (talk) 18:17, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Backup from Orain

Hi, I was running two wikis on Orain and Addshore told me to come over here so that @Southparkfan: can recover it. Could you please recover these two sites:

bus.orain.org to bus.miraheze.org

and

IQT.orain.org to IQT.miraheze.org

thanks alot :D Ww9980 (talk) 18:26, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

I have created the wiki IQT.miraheze.org, for backups @Southparkfan: Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 04:40, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
Hi, I've left a message on his talk page but it seems he is not seeing it - nothing happened for 3 days so far. Ww9980 (talk) 20:37, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
@Ww9800, the import has been done for a while now. Enjoy! Southparkfan (talk) 09:56, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
@Southparkfan, Thank you, it's the index page was not the same so i was mistaking it as not recovered. Thank you very much! Ww9980 (talk) 15:34, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

Trolls

While there are many legitimate reasons to oppose Rightwiki and I personally don't want it hosted on Miraheze (for many reasons including the site 99% of the time being down with "504 gateway error"), the two users Michaeldsuarez and Tinbox (Oliver Smith) are just trolls. They don't care about stirring up anything but drama. I'm just warning you fellows. Wyatt (talk) 07:45, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

What are you going to do if the warning is not addressed? Without talking about technical issues, Michaeldsuaraez is helping with the templates here and fixing double redirects on ATT, none of them seems trolly. I am not stepping in the rightwiki discussion because I do not have authority. — revi 10:28, 2 October 2015 (UTC)
Michaeldsuaraez has now totally left Miraheze now that the site didn't host Rightpedia. He's now trolling at MWzip http://mwzip.com/forum/index.php?topic=105.0 I told you people that they were trolls. Oh well they probably won't be back. I'm just saying I told you so. Wyatt (talk) 02:05, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
Hmm, that doesn't look like trolling to me. --Aryamanarora (talk) 15:58, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

Can I download a backup of my site?

I thought about using wgret to get a backup of my site but that would get all kinds of pages I don't want also. Is there a way to download a copy of just my site without going to links like the Steward board? Bulrush (talk) 09:44, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

There is two options.
  1. Special:Export, it may timeout if your backup is too large
  2. Request full backup to the sysadmin. — revi 10:24, 2 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks @revi. I did Special:Export, typed a name of 'Main_Page' in the box, clicked the Add button, and nothing happened. Then I clicked the Export button and nothing happened. Bulrush (talk) 12:05, 2 October 2015 (UTC)
Hi Bulrush, exporting works for me. Please try again? Southparkfan (talk) 09:56, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
Java is disabled for me by default in Firefox. Do I need to enable Java? Javascript should work all the time. I have flash blocked too by default unless I unblock it for a site. Ok I got it working. Bulrush (talk) 21:08, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

Another backup from Orain

I was running a wiki on Orain and I read so that @Southparkfan: can recover it. Could you please recover this site:

szk.orain.org to szk.miraheze.org

Thanks a lot! --Lalo5555 (talk) 15:59, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

I am waiting for sysadmin to receive the dump. Please note that any contents generated after 2015-06-15 is not included, unless you have your backup or Google Web Cache/Archival sites has backup of your site.
General note for import requests: If you created wiki after June 15, there is no backup unfortunately. — revi 05:29, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
Backup found. Import will be done asap. Southparkfan (talk) 09:56, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you very much! --Lalo5555 (talk) 14:08, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
Could you send me the backup file (for example with free.mailbigfile.com) to ensure safety? My e-mail: lalo5555@gmail.com --Lalo5555 (talk) 15:33, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

DDoS

There's a banner on my wiki that's says DDoS ongoing... What exactly is happening? Aryamanarora (talk) 21:20, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

Banner was actually a test to see if 'global sitenotices' were working, but Miraheze got DDoS'd tonight. I was searching for a way to notify the users via sitenotices. Southparkfan (talk) 09:56, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
On this note, I'll use this section to make a public comment on this. DDoS' are best left private business beyond 'one is happening' so I won't be discussing it in more detail than saying:
  1. It has had a considerable impact on the image of Miraheze (especially considering the short time we've been around). It seems the attack was directed wholly again Miraheze and no particular project/ideal at the minute.
  2. We've taken measures to work on prevention mostly involving upstream networking experts who are working with our hosts at their routers. As this is out of control, we're sadly limited on what we can do here but they've been very co-operative with working with me.
  3. We're aware the load issue with servers was the main bring down off-attacks. The person responsible for this area has said they're going to work on making our MediaWiki set up more cross-redundant. It is currently our own part of the infrastructure which can not be redundant and relies on one thing only.
If anything I feel able to say publicly comes along, I will say it through IRC (#miraheze on freenode). If you have any questions, please ask here or on IRC. I will be more willing to discuss sensitive information on IRC than on-wiki, especially via private message if for technical reasons. John (talk) 14:11, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
Who is doing this? Orain had the same problems. This site has inherited Orain's downtime problems. Wyatt (talk) 01:59, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Backup from Orain

Hi! I had a wiki on Orain and heard that @Southparkfan can recover the back-up of it. It was created before June 15 so I think there is a back-up.

Could you please recover portal.orain.org to portal.miraheze.org?

Thanks a lot! RectorRocks (talk) 16:19, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

How to backup all pages of wiki including sub pages?

I figured out how to export my wiki to XML but it only exports the Main Page. How do I export all pages of my wiki to an XML file? I don't want external links, only internal links on rawdata.miraheze.com. Thank you. Bulrush (talk) 12:43, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

I will upload your wiki's full backup to archive.org so you can download. Allow me an hour to process other stuff. — revi 12:46, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
Done It's uploaded here but you will need to wait (max an hour) until archive.org finishes their own anti-virus search. — revi 13:17, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you very much! So the typical export only exports one page then? We could use a plugin that exports the user's whole wiki. Mine won't be very large, maybe 50-100k uncompressed. I don't want to bother you when I need a backup. Bulrush (talk) 13:30, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
Special:Export has option to put pages to export. One article for one line. However if your exporting page is big, it may fail for timeout. — revi 13:46, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I will try to use http://www.archive.org to save these pages once in a while because I think I can download the whole site I made. Bulrush (talk) 16:03, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
@Revi Any help that you require on WikiTeam's end on getting dumps generated for all wikis? --Hydriz (talk) 10:08, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

Steps for all users to back up and download their own wikis as an XML file.
  1. Put a category of 'All' on every wiki page by entering this code: [[Category:All]]. I enter the category code on the bottom of each page as soon as I create it.
  2. Go to Special:Export page.
  3. In the box "Add pages from category" enter "All", no quotes.
  4. Click the Add button. All pages with that category will be added to the list below the Add button.
  5. Click Export button, and you get an XML file to download locally. This does not include any images though.

Bulrush (talk) 11:08, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

That way will require vigilance to ensure that all pages are included in the All category. I recommend using the WikiTeam Python script linked by Revi above. D4rkst4r (talk) 17:24, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Just wanted to say Thank You

I wanted to say Thank You to all the admins and everyone who makes this site possible. I know it's a lot of work. I really do appreciate it and wanted to make sure you knew that. Bulrush (talk) 11:01, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

Dormancy policy

Hi, I am bringing the dormancy policy back up again as we have more and more wikis, but some of them are not active/never had edits since they were created. I think that we should implement the dormancy policy soon so that we can close/delete inactive wikis. I think that @John: and @Southparkfan: already have to much work so in order to make it easier you could grant wiki creators a right to globally edit interface pages (for Mediawiki:Sitenotice) and Special:LockDB. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 12:28, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

I still disagree with current status. The period should be longer than current status. — revi 12:32, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
We have 139 wikis already, implementing will take time anyways and we don't want to have too many inactive wikis. --Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 12:36, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
I don't oppose the policy itself; however, even if this was brought in 2018, I believe 60 days are too short. It should be more permissive. — revi 12:40, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
I do agree to that, but for wikis that have no activity I wouldn't. For inactive wikis maybe the founder is gone so yes, I will change it. But for people that have no edits on their wiki it's likely there not going to remind themselves after 2 months. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 13:00, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
Maybe my szk.miraheze.org is a victim of your dormancy policy. But it is a big one, created and developed on Orain. Thank you very much your help to reorganizing here from backup, but I think this policy isn't careful enough. Please detect the number of pages and files in a wiki before closing it. So please reopen my wiki again. Thanks. --Lalo5555 (talk) 20:32, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
@Lalo5555: The dormancy policy has not yet been implemented, even if it was your wiki doesn't fit in the criteria, and is therefore not closed. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 04:56, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
I agree with John (per IRC), that until we find a "easier" way to close it to which all wiki creators have access to we cannot implement this policy. Reception123 (talk)(contribs) 19:37, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
So dormancy will be based on when the owner or another user last made edits to the wiki? I wonder if 60 days is enough. I can get real busy at work sometimes and just don't have time to edit the wiki. Will you delete a person's wiki just because they are busy? Maybe looking at the average edits per month the wiki has been alive, would be a better metric. A wiki that has 1 edit early in a 6 month period is clearly dead. But a wiki that has had 100 edits in early 2 months of the past 6 months shows it's more active. Bulrush (talk) 16:22, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
Wikis should only be deleted if they have little or no content on them. Even if they're dormant someone might want to take over them instead of starting back at square one. D4rkst4r (talk) 17:27, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
I'm willing to go for a inactivity period of 120 days if desired. From a sysadmin-view, databases do take up space on our database server, and we don't want to keep 'unnecessary' wikis. Obviously we don't want to be too strict. Southparkfan (talk) 19:51, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
