Creating a common image repository for Miraheze[edit | edit source]
Hi, I've proposed this issue on Community noticeboard, and found that some people are interested in it. Thus, I'm here to post an RfC to officially discuss whether we should create a common image repository wiki (something like Wikimedia commons or Uncyclomedia commons) for Miraheze.
The reason for the proposal[edit | edit source]
Although it's true that InstantCommons enables us to use images from Wikimedia commons, there are several weaknesses for this.
- Not all users join Wikimedia projects. - For those who don't use Wikimedia commons (I'm one of them, in fact), it's annoying to share images across wikis, because we have to upload them on all wikis we'd like to have.
- Policies are different. - Even if you use Wikimedia commons, the policies are different, and it's likely in some cases that images would be deleted on Wikimedia commons, but are OK to be uploaded on Miraheze. For these cases, you still have to upload the same image multiple times.
I should also note that we can save disc space on our servers by having our own common repository, because it will reduce multiple uploads.
Proposal 1[edit | edit source]
Finally, here's my proposal.
- The wiki URL should be: https://mirahezecommons.miraheze.org (because it seems that https://commons.miraheze.org is already used)
- For now, admins on meta will also be admins on commons. But this can be changed in the future, and commons may have their unique admins.
- Images uploaded to commons will be available from any Miraheze wikis.
- If you need certain files for a local wiki and commons already has different ones with the same name, you can just re-upload them to your local wiki.
- It would be better if Commons could search for duplicated uploads across wikis and merge such uploads into one file on commons (automated clean up). Though this is not a must, and we can also do it manually if necessary.
- These functions should be enabled by sysadmins if this proposal is approved.

The name of the wiki is too long for me. If you cannot use «commons.miraheze.org» I propose to use «commonswiki.miraheze.org» at least temporarily or talk to OlegCinema and arrive agreement on the name. Wiki1776 (talk) 17:05, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Comment: https://commonswiki.miraheze.org seems to be one of the available options. Maybe we can vote for the name if the proposal (as a whole) is approved. I can also talk to OlegCinema regarding this topic (since the wiki seems to be inactive for a while, if he agrees, we can use it as the common repository).--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 05:08, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
