Requests for Comment/Add Caveat to Duplicate Wiki Policy

Hello. I am the founder and bureaucrat of the Creepypasta Wiki on Miraheze (creepypasta.miraheze.org). To my knowlege, I am the first person to create a wiki for "creepypasta" on Miraheze, and the only one to put serious effort into developing such a wiki so far. However, I have no desire to monopolize the benefit of simply being the first to "stake the territory." Prior to reading the updated content policy it had been my hope that creepypasta enthusiasts would be free to create their own communities for it.
I believe the policy against creating wikis about a substantially similar topic as one already existing should only be strictly applied to wikis whose main thrust is information, e.g. wikis about specific games or TV shows. There should be more lattitude regarding creative writing wikis. I propose either a blanket exemption to the existing policy for wikis foucsing on user-generated creative work, or a disposition stating that exemptions will be more readily granted for them. Proposal 1: Blanket Exemption[edit | edit source]
Wikis whose main thrust is user-generated creative work, such as creepypasta, fanfiction, and general creative writing, are broadly exempt from the policy against duplicate wiki subject matter.

Abstain[edit | edit source]
Oppose[edit | edit source]
Oppose The duplicate wiki policy exists so that there aren't two wikis competing against each other for a userbase and quality content (which can cause SEO issues for both wikis); if creativity-focused UGC wikis are exempt from the duplicate wikis policy, there'd be nothing stopping such wikis from stealing another wiki's content, which can cause unnecessary conflict. Proposal 2: Official Disposition to Relax the Rule[edit | edit source]
To conserve Miraheze resources and prevent the creation of a bunch of wikis nobody uses, wikis whose main thrust is user-generated creative content are still broadly subject to the ban on duplicate wiki subject matter. However, a caveat is added that exemptions will be more readily granted for such wikis, provided that the creators demonstrate willingness to seriously develop them, and the wikis are not created as pure spite-driven forks.

Abstain[edit | edit source]
Abstain The concerns I note in my opposition vote to Proposal 1 will still occur to an extent, but I believe that this proposal does a better job at alleviating these concerns than a blanket exemption. Tali64³ (talk | contributions) 14:21, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
Oppose[edit | edit source]
Oppose There is no objective way to assess a creator's intent beyond them making a claim to "seriously develop" their wiki. It would still be a duplicate wiki. I don't see how this proposal helps address the issue it is attempting to resolve. – Jph2 (talk) 15:16, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
