Is Miraheze supports interwiki links to other Miraheze-powered wikis?
I was wondering how links work when it comes to interwiki links. I tried a few tests below, so send me some feedback about the tests.
communitycentralbympteam:Bulletins:Community
If it does not work, my suggestion is support interwiki links to other wikis. Maybe I'm stressed out to insert external links to other wikis each time. --DekuPH2006AJHalili (talk) 09:57, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, we have general interwikis for other Miraheze wikis, which should be
mh:wikiname:fullpagename
. As for the example above, thus, the interwiki should be written as: mh:communitycentralbympteam:Bulletins:Community.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 10:08, 18 February 2019 (UTC)- That's nice, but what if I host some external site (for instance, a wiki on one on my own servers) and want to point the miraheze: entry on Special:Interwiki somewhere? If I create a link to a page like https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/mh:communitycentralbympteam:Bulletins:Community from outside, it doesn't get me whatever's on Bulletins:Community locally here, it gets me an error message. Carlb (talk) 22:38, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- The links are only done by changing the way the software renders links on a page. In this regard, it is rather limited, as it does not allow you to use the full features of interwiki links. I'm not too certain how to accomplish what you are asking, but wouldn't it be easier to simply link directly to communitycentralbympteam.miraheze.org/wiki/Bulletins:Community? -- Void Whispers 23:39, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- There are over 3000 individual Miraheze wikis. If I'm some random sysadmin of some random outside, external wiki I might be willing to add one miraheze: entry to the interwiki table on my site, much like I have one interwiki for wikipedia:. I'm not going to add 3000 individual Special:Interwiki entries to each of 3000 Miraheze projects, many of which are inactive or largely empty - but if the whole thing could be done on one interwiki prefix, that at least is viable.
- As an example of how this works, the wikipedia: interwiki prefix on most non-WMF sites points to just one of the hundreds of wikis in the Wikimedia family, perhaps (most commonly) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/$1. So what happens if one of my users wants to link to Wikivoyage's article on Montréal. Wikivoyage is part of Wikimedia, but I don't have a direct interwiki pointing to fr.wikivoyage.org. No problem. I have an interwiki to en.wikipedia, so a user can wikilink wikipedia:voy:fr:Montréal and Wikipedia's server will unpack the resulting mess ( https://en.wikipedia.org/voy:fr:Montréal ) as it recognises voy: as a local interwiki to the Wikimedia sibling, which in turn will recognise fr: as a language interwiki, which will eventually land on "Montréal est la plus grande métropole du Québec..." in Wikimedia's French-language travel guide et tout va bien. I don't need to know whether voy: is a page namespace, a language code, another interwiki or just part of the page title; I send all the outbound-to-WMF links to Wikipedia and let their server handle redirection to individual sibling wikis.
- If you're relying on the wiki which contains the outbound link to know that "communitycentralbympteam" is a subdomain and "bulletins" is a namespace? The software running a site located outside Miraheze doesn't grasp this distinction and shouldn't need to do so. Modifying the outbound link on the originating wiki only works if that site knows your URL structure (including any custom domains or subdomains for individual projects) and is running non-standard software to try to figure where the link is supposed to go. That's not going to happen, as the site sending traffic to you is running stock versions of the code which make just the one ($1) substitution and do no other parsing. The end result is that users of other wikis can't link mh:projectname:pagename as an interwiki link, so instead must use plain external links - complete with that pesky "nofollow" attribute which tells search engines to ignore those links as potentially being spam. Problems
Here at Miraheze, we encountered some problems. First of all, there are too much wiki requests waiting for approval, so we either have to add more wiki creators or let registered users access the Special:CreateWiki page to create a wiki. Thank you. LegoMasterSend me a message! 10:41, 19 February 2019 (UTC)
- I agree with the part that we need more wiki creators. You can become one by yourself, if you make a request here and it succeeds. However, I don't think we should allow any users to create a wiki. Unlike Wikia/Fandom, we run on donations, and allowing to host malicious or/and invalid wikis without checking can cause severe damage not only to our servers but also to our finances.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 17:13, 19 February 2019 (UTC)
- I dont want to make a request because not enough global edits LegoMaster (talk - contribs - logs - uploads - global contribs) 04:36, 22 February 2019 (UTC)
- To add to LegoMaster's statement, I initially found the wiki creator tool very intimidating. Very rarely does one run into a non-automated system on the internet these days and when you are normally asking for something big (Wikia uses it for adoptions) and it frequently becomes quite complex. Now the Miraheze system is neither but conveying that to users is difficult. ~ El Komodos Drago (talk to me) 22:49, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
- @LegoMaster: Wiki creator does not require that many global edits. Since you have already been monitoring the request queue and have reminded us that there are unreviewed requests, I think it would be fine for you to request wiki creator. Reception123 (talk) (C) 05:51, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

I have this wiki, and script errors kept showing up. I need someone from Fabricator to fix it, or a Lua module editor, or someone who is familiar about Lua modules. LegoMaster (talk - contribs - logs - uploads - global contribs) 10:51, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

Need to attach my accounts
I currently have a second account on the Nonciclopedia.org wiki that according to my account manager is not attached to the global account. Can someone help me into doing it? Is the problem because that account was made when that wiki was on a different server than Miraheze? -Phantom Dusclops'92 (talk) 21:57, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Phantom Dusclops: That could well be a problem, as Miraheze has global accounts that apply across individual wikis. Users imported from another server are not attached to your other account here. The best solution is to settle on a single Miraheze identity, and write sufficient documentation to tell Nonciclopedians you are the same person. Spıke (talk)23:24 6-Mar-2019
Development of Structured Wikiquote
Hi,
It’s been a long time since a multilingual, Wikibase-based version of Wikiquote has been proposed and supported Meta-Wikimedia but it seems the Wikimedia Foundation & Wikimedia Deutchland don’t care (they don’t care much of anything else than WPedia, commons & WData). Could Miraheze host it & would it be any interrested developpers ?
Thank you — CreativeC (talk) 21:07, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
- @CreativeC: Yes, (as long as they respect our policies) any wiki is welcome at Miraheze! Reception123 (talk) (C) 17:59, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Reception123: Thank you. Now to find motivated devs -- CreativeC (talk) 19:10, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
- But could Miraheze accept regular updates of the Structured Quote extension (even a restricted FTP access to the specific wiki ?) ? -- CreativeC (talk) 19:13, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
- I don't understand this, as the real Wikiquote is working well, and some of its pages are multilingual. I am not a contributor but an occasional reader, but how would you motivate developers to begin work on the same thing with a different underlying design (perhaps more "structured" than the original?) Spıke (talk)23:22 6-Mar-2019
- @Spike the Dog: Wikiquote can’t be used as a database and thus reused by other website. Also Wikiquote isn’t a multilingual-wiki; meaning that you have to re create a page of an author dozens of time to translate the same quotes + it slows the work as communities don’t meet others so much. Also WikiquoteS aren’t really known, so maybe merging it into a single community will make it famous —CreativeC (talk) 21:18, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Adding/installing custom fonts
How do you go about installing custom fonts? I only need to use a handwriting style font in a template. I don't want to change the font for the whole site. The font in question is called charm and is available on google fonts. Thanks. Borderman (Talk) 09:28, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
- I think I've done it, just not sure if it's the correct way. I added the following to the beginning of commons.css
@import url("https://font.googleapis.com/css?family=Charm");
and then set the font-family in the template, which eventually changed the selected text to the desired font. For future references, is there another way of doing this or is the easiest way. Borderman (Talk) 13:21, 7 March 2019 (UTC)- I'm pretty sure that's the easiest way to do it, as it's what I would have suggested doing. -- Void Whispers 17:08, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
- That is more than I knew about invoking them. Regarding not changing the font for the whole site, this will happen automatically; you have to specify style to get it to be used. Either a new rule in MediaWiki:Common.css (and the rule can state which picture elements it applies to); or in an individual picture element. Spıke (talk)21:48 7-Mar-2019

Problem with the queue, again.
(Originally under the original problem discussion thread but decided it was better to post here)

Dormancy policy exemption
Not sure if this is the right place but @John: told me to request on Meta.
Please exempt my wiki - weather.miraheze.org from the global dormancy policy so that no inactivity remedies will be taken against it.
Please see https://weather.miraheze.org/wiki/Weather_Wiki:News/March_2019_Inactivity for more information. Amanda Catherine (talk) 02:25, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Amanda Catherine: Usually they are done on Stewards' noticeboard but I guess this is fine. As for the exemption itself, the issue I see is that there is not enough content on the wiki to justify an exemption for "Wikis made to be read, where a lot of information is already on wiki and doesn't need to be actively edited." While weatherwiki has many pages regarding policy, there are only 4 actual content pages (including the Main Page). I would like someone else's opinion on this, but I would be inclined not to accept the exemption because of this reason. Reception123 (talk) (C) 07:29, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- I was under the impression that “founder request” was a valid reason for an exemption. But if it isn’t anymore, fine, just please don’t close/delete/whatever the wiki without emailing me per what I linked to above. Amanda Catherine (talk) 21:06, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- Just a passing comment but Miraheze doesn’t recognise “founders” but communities. John (talk) 21:47, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- I'm sorry about the intrusion, but I'm taking advantage of it. Reception123, John. In my Ucroniaswiki wiki, I am working on content articles in the Taller and Lista namespaces rather than in the main space for various reasons: Articles should be complete before moving them to the main space and that for the moment, the article counter does not count them until they are finished.
- If in the future, my wiki has more than 100 articles with content in the Taller and Lista namespaces and none in the main space. Can't you still ask for an exception? Ucronistaw (talk) 19:27, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

Twitter cards
A "Twitter card" is code in a web page that lets Twitter display a graphic inside a tweet that cites the web page. The code consists of several META tags in the HEAD of the web page, whereas stuff we code inside an edit window goes into the BODY of the web page. I could write JavaScript in my website's MediaWiki:Common.js to move it, just before the page is rendered. But it's not clear that the Twitterbot renders the page at all. Has anyone already completed this exercise and can you offer advice or examples? Spıke (talk)17:06 10-Mar-2019

This wiki needs three special pages. They are Special:CreateBlogPosts, Special:NewestBlogPosts and Special:Chat. The three special pages are similar to this wiki's three special pages. I don't know what it has to do with Phabricator. LegoMaster (talk - contribs - logs - uploads - global contribs) 10:41, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

How to be an admin?
I just created the miraheze version of Tolololpedia (https://tolololpedia.miraheze.org) because there is someone that said all uncyclopedias including Tolololpedia will be closed. I want to help Miraheze financially
I want to help Miraheze financially because for me it deserves it (I think that it is a good service), however I do not have much money. However, an idea has occurred to me: create a campaign in Patreon. The objective of this campaign is, in addition to obtaining money and donating a percentage to Miraheze, to encourage the administrators of my wiki to do more and better content. This will be convenient to Miraheze, since more quality articles have, the better known my wiki will be, and therefore, the better known Miraheze will be. Do you agree with my proposal? - PaladinDeGigantas (talk) 16:30, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
Wikia Uncyclopedia
In response to Wikia's decision to cease hosting the original Uncyclopedia, editors are now voting among four new candidates for a new home. I advocated Miraheze but this got no traction (Uncyclopedia Admins apparently wanting an anxious sales pitch from Miraheze Stewards) until The Pioneer followed up. In the voting discussion, the current site notice stating that capacity is low and "updates will fail" has been cited as a reason not to choose Miraheze; also the deteriorating state of finances. Spıke (talk)10:49 15-Mar-2019
- @Spike the Dog: Well, unless people donate there is nothing we can do, we are a non-profit and that is how this whole site lives, from donations. Where is the discussion page? Reception123 (talk) (C) 05:53, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
- Found it! Will comment. Reception123 (talk) (C) 05:57, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
I've asked some questions relating to this here on Talk:Miraheze. I should probably have posted them on this noticeboard instead. Flyingcat (talk) 23:56, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
- Probably Stewards' noticeboard, as it is more for wikifarm management than for the community. Spıke (talk)00:53 17-Mar-2019
Decision looms
Repeating, the end of the month is the apparent date at which Wikia closes the original Uncyclopedia. Some there continue to argue that lack of money and lack of storage space would mean that relocation to Miraheze would be a dead end. @Flyingcat: asks at Talk:Miraheze whether, in the case that it is a dead end, it is a dead end that leaves in place an abandoned copy of Uncyclopedia for new imitators to reside in.
Inadequacy of storage and of funding are real issues to a few voters. I think that, in the more numerous cases of members of competing wikis who are kibitzing in the debate at Wikia, it is an excuse.
Miraheze management has taken the stance of passive welcoming. If it can instead give assurances that Miraheze is a good long-term host, it can acquire another website as notorious and active as All The Tropes. This should be of interest to a wiki farm that wants to be put on the map and perhaps even get a Wikipedia page that isn't immediately taken down. Spıke (talk)17:08 23-Mar-2019
- @Spike the Dog: The vote's over. The people have spoken and Miraheze is a loser. Storage and money won't be enough to make them move to The Mirror Wiki or Miraheze to be with you. You were holding them back and everyone is happier without you. Accept it and move on friend. Alwam101 (talk) 05:56, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
- The Pioneer declined the majority of the requests. There are a few (Arabic, Russian, Japanese), but the rest will either be hosted elsewhere or become defunct. Dysklyver (talk) 15:18, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
- Italian (Nonciclopedia) did move here as I was not willing to accommodate some of Wedhro's more oddball demands, including the demand that the wiki be locked down so that no one can edit. There was also an attempt to move Polish (Nonsensopedia) here; that ended with the community not being satisfied with Miraheze due to a number of serious errors (including a mass-dump of Italian Nonciclopedia content into Nonsensopedia, which never should have happened). The main community is now at independent nonsa.pl, leaving me stuck with the awkward question of the fate of the nonsensopedia.org custom domain as that move has left the domain pointing to a fork, not the main project.
- The Russian ("Olbanian") Uncyclopedia has also moved to independent hosting after encountering unresolved technical problems here.
- There are four others (ar-beidipedia, eo-neciklopedio, id-tolololpedia and zh-cn.uncyclopedia) which were still planning to move here; so far, less than a quarter of the content which needs to be in these wikis before the Wikia versions go dead ("This wiki is closed", no redirect, no other explanation) is there and the import has slowed to a crawl. It is becoming rapidly apparent that the wikis will not be ready in time. See https://meta.uncyclomedia.org/wiki/Forum:Reorganization_of_the_whole_Uncycs#Deadline_is_near.2C_but_not_even_the_half_of_every_articles_are_imported
- Miraheze was defeated in a vote on http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Hosting_options_for_Uncyclopedia_(wikia) on the fate of the original English-language project. That outcome could have been avoided had Miraheze done a better job of handling the other, smaller Uncyclopedia projects which had attempted to move earlier - such as Polish - and if they had deployed adequate infrastructure to handle the task (at 5.2 million revisions in database, en.Uncyc is not "All the tropes"... it's larger, and 100Gb virtual RamNodes are not going to fill the bill).
- Ansaikuropedia (Japan) is not Wikia, was never Wikia, and is not closing down. The Pioneer had made a number of misleading posts a month ago, both on the meta.uncyclomedia.org thread and spammed across every Uncyclopedia-related Wikia on which the Wikia shutdown notice was posted, making false claims that I was shutting down my server or that projects which I am currently hosting were being moved away - effectively portraying this as a two-way choice between uncyclopedia.co and Miraheze. I'm not going anywhere. The Ansaikuropedia hosted on Miraheze is not the main project, it is a fork created by a minority of users who were objecting to one user on ansaikuropedia.org being a bit quick to issue broad IP rangeblocks in response to vandalism.
- Many of the other projects, such as Uncyclopedia 2.0, are projects which have nothing to do with us but which are reproducing Uncyclopedia content, logos or branding without authorisation from the original creators or proper attribution.
- The rest that Dysklyver wants to fork are already defunct; I've hosted them on my own server (so language xx: is xx.uncyclopedia.info) and the data is safe, but there appears to be no active community. I see nothing to be gained by duplicating the content again, if no one is actively editing. Why did you request these, again?
- At this point, the time for discussion of the fate of the original uncyclopedia.org is long past. Miraheze needs to be doing some serious damage control to ensure that the handful of Uncyclopedia wikias which did choose to move here will be ready on time, as any site notices on the old sites saying "we've moved" need to be already running now. The whole Wikia mess goes dead on April Fool's Day and there will be no opportunity then to post anything on their side to say where the communities have gone. We've had a month to prepare and deal with this; I made my hardware upgrades and grabbed backups of everything weeks ago, why are you folks seemingly asleep at the switch? Carlb (talk) 21:48, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
- The Pioneer declined the majority of the requests. There are a few (Arabic, Russian, Japanese), but the rest will either be hosted elsewhere or become defunct. Dysklyver (talk) 15:18, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
DNS Redirect
Hello guys,
I have made a DNS Redirect from my OVH Hosted domain so that http:// or https://zw.fontainebleau-avon.fr redirects to zero.miraheze.org
In my browser, when typing http://zw.fontainebleau-avon.fr/ , everything seems to be fine to navigate in the Wiki, but if I click on one link on the left menu below the logo such as "Recent changes" or any other one, a blank page is displayed. It sounds that it does not work for any Special Pages.
Does anyone ever tried to do this ? Is this a normal behaviour ? How can I change that so that anyone reaching my Wiki from zw.fontainebleau-avon.fr has a correct behaviour ?

Access rights: Wiki with limited editors but members can comment
Is it possible on Miraheze to have a small group of users able to create/write pages / articles, and a much bigger group wich can only post comments/ discuss on the page ? A bit like Atlassian confluence. It would be a collaborative way of formalizing projects where everybody have different ideas, and one is responsible for puting it "on paper". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dmaugis (talk • contribs) 18:40, 28 March 2019
- Yeah, it's possible, but depends a bit on how you do comments. However, the basics of what you'd do is use Special:ManageWikiPermissions to remove the ability to edit from the * and User groups. Then give the ability to edit to a special user group that you give to your editors. Then, you'd somehow allow users to comment (Extension:Comments may allow users to comment without being able to edit). And that's that. I have read your Terms of Use, but they only say that you must not violate the laws of California or the Netherlands, in addition to the obvious prohibition of nudes of minors. But the limits of erotic images aren't explained.
- Is pornography allowed? What kind of pronography is prohibited? (Obviously, the child pronography is forbidden).
- Are nudes allowed? What types of nudity are not allowed? For example, those of Wikia FANDOM do not tolerate nudes, but they do accept artistic nudes and "doll nudes" (they are naked that do not have nipples or genitals, like dolls for girls).
- And what about the "hentai" (pornographic illustrations with anime/manga style)? And the "ecchi" (illustrations not pornographic but e'roticas in anime/manga style)? And the "lolicon/shotacon" (they are underages drawn, that is, they are not real people, but they are often drawn in a perverted way)?
- Is it possible to talk about erotic video games or h-games (hentai games)? For example, there is a wiki that deals entirely with an erotic game: https://cursedarmor.miraheze.org/
I know these questions are annoying, but I've seen in some wikis (most were Chinese) that had pornographic images. --PaladinDeGigantas (talk) 00:28, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- As long as it is legal in the both countries, it should be fine. Reception123 (talk) (C) 08:56, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
- I will note that drawn pornographic depictions of minors are generally illegal in the Netherlands since a 2011 law banning it. This differs from the US where I understand it is a grey area. Dysklyver (talk) 15:23, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
- Hey Dysklyver, do you think that this gallery is illegal in Netherlands? It contains "doll nudity" (that is a nudity that doesn't have genitalia or nipple exposure, beacuse they are "deleted" from the drawing): https://brigadoon-marin-and-melan.fandom.com/wiki/Eternal_Green/Gallery --PaladinDeGigantas (talk) 17:09, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

how to deal with "413 Request Entity Too Large" ?
I am trying to use Special:Import at my community and got the following error message:
- 413 Request Entity Too Large
- nginx/1.15.8
I am trying to import an XML file containing the data of a Wikia project's articles. It is 461.9 MB.
Does anyone know what the maximum import size is? Any way I can change the setting to include this?
I read at https://craftcms.stackexchange.com/questions/2328/413-request-entity-too-large-error-with-uploading-a-file and https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-unix-bsd-nginx-413-request-entity-too-large/ that for nginx you need to change something called client_max_body_size in "nginx.conf" but I'm not sure how to find that. Is that something any project owner can access, or only miraheze staff?
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Configuring_file_uploads#Set_maximum_size_for_file_uploads mentions:
- may require root access to the server. (If you are on a shared host, contact your server administrator.)
Who is the server administrator of the wiki? Can they give me a temporary boost to 500 MB file upload just to import this XML and then set it back to normal? Or perhaps could they upload it for me, or teach me to upload from the .7z file so it's compressed?
Compressed by default in a .7z file this was merely 14.9 MB but I was getting a different error "Import failed: Expected <mediawiki> tag, got. " when I tried to import the compressed .7z version of the XML. Tycio (talk) 03:32, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- hi, that’s because we have a max upload limit set server side. The limit is 250MB. You can request us to import the dump at https://phabricator.miraheze.org/ Paladox (talk) 01:49, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
Is Patreon allowed at Miraheze?
I have read the Content Policy, but it does not specify if a Patreon project is allowed. What happens is that I would like to know if it is legal to ask for financial help from a Patreon project to be able to make more and better articles for a specific wiki. The money obtained will not be directly for me, since a percentage will be donated to Miraheze. This does not mean that I am going to convert a wiki into a restricted access only for those who supported Patreon, in fact, the wiki will remain fully open to the public. I would like to know if a project in Patreon like this counts as a limited fundraiser-type sales as was mentioned in Content Policy, since the main reason for Patreon's project will be to improve the wiki and its content. --PaladinDeGigantas (talk) 20:01, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
- Here <-- I have noticed that several staff members were in favor of a Patreon for Miraheze, although they have not yet carried out that project. --PaladinDeGigantas (talk) 20:05, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

How To Add Videos To Your Miraheze Page?
I need to know how to add videos to Miraheze pages. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JuriCon (talk • contribs) 03:23, 30 March 2019
- You might be able to upload videos, but I'd recommend using the YouTube extension, which allows you to embed YouTube videos into your pages. -- Void Whispers 03:39, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
- There are a few ways to do this. Option 1 would be to upload a .ogg through Special:Upload and hope for the best. Installing the TimedMediaHandler is defiantly preferred if not a must have for anyone doing this. However video support is hard so unless their is something preventing you from doing this I would recommend following Void's advice.

- The page is not locked, but protected for autoconfirmed users, in order to prevent new users from requesting permissions which will most likely not been granted. Creating a public and a private section into the same wiki
Hi all. I am new here but collaborated as a volunteer in it.wikipedia and other wikis before. I have sent a request for creating a new private wiki for an organization. Actually, I would prefer to have in the same wiki two sections: one public (readable/editable for anyone) and one private (readable/editable just for selected users), as it happens on Wikipedia, where some pages are viewable only by administrators. Is it possible to do something like this with Miraheze? Do I have to change something at this regard in my request? Or have I open two separate wikis? Thanks in advance. --Daniele Pugliesi (talk) 13:51, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
- You could take advantage of the fact that, by rule (see FAQ), even a private wiki's Main Page is public. You can give different classes of user different rights, but I don't know a way to give different pages different treatment. Other people may have better answers for you. Spıke (talk)17:14 4-Apr-2019
- It's not possible to have a flexible system where you can have public and non-public pages on the same wiki. If you need to have public and private pages, you will need to use two wikis. Also, as far as I am aware Wikipedia does not have pages that are limited in visibility to admins only (excepting for special pages). -- Void Whispers 20:55, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

503 Backend fetch failed
I have been trying to use Special:Import using a 90MB file to import the recent versions of pages from our old wiki. When I did so today and a couple days ago I got the same error message:
- 503 Backend fetch failed
- Our servers are having issues at the moment.
- What can I do?
- If you're a wiki visitor or owner
- Try again in a few minutes. If the problem persists, please report this on phabricator. We appoligize for the inconvenience. Our sysadmins should be attempting to solve the issue ASAP!
I am unable to report it on phabricator because it will not send me an activation e-mail. Does anyone know what causes this? I am settling for importing the recent version for now to cut down on file size, so the 250MB limit should not be the issue when it is merely a 90MB file.
When I watched the % it did slowly appear to successfully upload the entire file, it seems to be some problem involved with processing it. Tycio (talk) 18:22, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Tycio: That is because a 90 MB file is too large to be imported on-wiki, and it must be imported by a sysadmin (so requested on Phabricator). Have you tried sending the activation email again? Reception123 (talk) (C) 05:39, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
I just did so successfully... and it turns out I found all the old e-mails I thought weren't getting sent. They were all in my 'Junk Mail'. I was confused as Hotmail recently split the Inbox into "Focused" and "Other" so I guess I was thinking of "Other" as my Junk Mail. I've added Miraheze to Safe Senders so this shouldn't happen anymore. No idea why HM assumed it was spam! Tycio (talk) 03:38, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
Private page readable without restriction
Dear all, greetings, I am new to Miraheze. I have one question: Is it possible to make my wiki readable for everyone visiting it but only editable by me? Thanks!
Kind regards Thanuttamo
- Please make a task on Phabricator LegoMaster (talk - contribs - logs - uploads - global contribs) 09:36, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
- Actually, this is something that can be done by yourself. Just follow these steps:
- Using Special:ManageWikiPermissions, remove the edit right from the '*' and 'user' groups.
- Again using Special:ManageWikiPermissions, add the edit right to whatever group you would like to be able to edit. If it's just yourself, adding it to 'sysop' (administrator), would work fine.
- That's it. If you need any help getting this done, please let me know. -- Void Whispers 12:51, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
Thank you Void for your answer to my question on the Community Noticeb. regarding steps for my Wiki being not editable but readable by anyone. I followed your instructions but still other people than myself can edit any page. It seems there is just the option between a private Wiki (editorial + reading restrictions) and a public one (no editorial or reading restrictions). Is that the case? Or is a mixture possible, I would like the setting of: editorial restriction + no restriciton as to readability for anyone. Appreciate your assistance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thanuttamo (talk • contribs)
- If you follow Void's Step 1 above, general users will not be able to edit your wiki. Spıke (talk)10:37 16-Apr-201
What I can see on the "Manage a wiki's permissions" page is a bar with this heading "Select existing group to edit". Bureaucrats I selected in this bar in contrats to the "*" which was default. There is another bar with the heading "Create a new user group", which I left empty as was it by default. After doing that I logged out and still was able in that mode, as a random visitor so to speak, to edit without restriction ... What would you suggest in this case? Further guidance is much appreciated.

Translator permission?
Hello, I happened to notice a typo on a translated page, but when I tried to fix it, it said "You need translation rights to translate messages. Get permission", with a link to meta:Translator (which is a red link) provided. According to Special:UserGroupRights, it seems like I need to either get autoconfirmed or get confirmed/translator permissions manually.
Could anyone tell me why it is so? IMO, foreign users who are capable of translation may not be very active even enough to get themselves autoconfirmed (because they have nothing to edit other than translation works here on meta), and thus anyone, or any registered users, at least, should be allowed to translate pages. Thanks in advance.--ニア・バイオ (talk) 05:24, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
- As I recall, we had an instance where a user was creating accounts and was inserting abusive information into translated pages. This proved harder to moderate than standard editing, so we limited to permission. As well, we've had issues with poor/machine translations being added in the past. Perhaps we should make Meta:Translator with a short blurb to request from any admin. I don't know if we want to allow all users to translate, but we haven't had many issues lately, so it's possible. Anyway, I've added translator to your account. -- Void Whispers 01:54, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
Discussion notifications announcement
As you have probably noticed by now, Site updates have not been sent/updated for a while. The main reason for this is the fact that there was not an interest in it, and there was not enough information that was worth sending to users monthly.
I have already sent this message to the Site updates list, but I am also posting here because I would like to propose a trying out a different type of notice sent to users. Instead of monthly updates of a limited number of statistics (which can be consulted by users anyway), staff would instead notify interested users if there is an interesting discussion (on Community noticeboard or Stewards' noticeboard) or if there is a local vote on Meta. Currently, there is no incentive for many users to visit Meta and check recent changes to see if there is anything they would be interested in, so this system would fix that and notify users of that so they can join in the discussion whenever there is one.
In order to subscribe to these notifications, please add your name in the same format to Discussion notifications/List, and you will start being notified on your talkpage. If there is interest in these notifications, they will be continued. Reception123 (talk) (C) 08:02, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Referata compromised
Hello,
I'm not sure if anyone is already aware of this, but it appears that one of our competitors, Referata, has had its databases compromised in what appears on the surface to be a DOS takedown. The vast majority of Referata sites either will not load and instead redirect to a spam message, and if they will load, are locked from editing and still have hacking spam on them (LocalSettings.php was leaked as part of the hack). Despite multiple attempts to regain control of the service, it appears that Yaron Koren, MediaWiki developer and founder of Referata, has been unable to completely expel the hacker(s). As such, I would not be surprised if Miraheze gets an uptick of wiki requests/import requests due to this. Amanda Catherine (talk) 20:59, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Removing all content from a wiki?
I still want to continue my wiki, but between importing it from Wikia and changing nearly all of my layouts/templates to better fit the space here, it's become a disorganized mess. I'd rather start from scratch, but keep the same URL if possible. Polyrhythm (talk) 04:26, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

How do I change the alignment of an infobox?
Hello! I'm writing this question because I do not know how to change the alignment of a userbox on my wiki. For instance, if I want it to be on the right side of the page, as most Wikipedia infoboxes are. Thanks! --LiamUJ (talk) 20:14, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
- If you imported your infoboxes from another wiki, import the page MediaWiki:Common.css, it should fix all the styling related to most of the templates from that wiki. -- Void Whispers 20:19, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
- Awesome, thanks for letting me know! --LiamUJ (talk) 20:21, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
Translator permission gone?
I tried to translate a page to find out that the permissions seem to be gone. This tells me that I'm still a "translator", but I can't translate any pages. Is this part of all the broken permissions I found on my wiki and are reported on some other Japanese wikis (as seen here)?--ニア・バイオ (talk) 11:49, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
- Well, I couldn't either. This is because there was an incident regarding permissions and permission groups and the permission was reseted to default on almost all wikis. Paladox is trying to restore all the settings as it used to be. Please see this phab task for updates.
- If you are in a hurry, you may ask our local bureaucrats to restore the permissions manually on administrators' noticeboard.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 12:07, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
Underage users
How do you deal with underage users? Fungster My talk | My contributions | FMF Meta | CA 13:07, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
- This's under Privacy Policy at section number 8 guideline, any parents or guardians should aware their children underage activities on the Services, could via through from the email at "staff@miraheze.org", and their children information will be immediately remove on sight. SA 13 Bro (talk) 16:57, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
- If the real question concerns users behaving immaturely, then my answer is that your wiki should include (1) a clear statement of its purpose and how to make valid contributions to that purpose, (2) communication with problem users, beginning by "assuming good faith" but proceeding to warnings if necessary, and (3) having your wiki's Admins use their power to block disruptive users. Setting the duration of the block using public rules avoids the impression that any penalty was personal.

miraheze.org, do not handle them unless instructed to do so by a sysadmin (and when you do, mention their name - and by "handle", we mean enforce the ToU in a way that you judge a violation and then make it clear it's for a ToU violation - if they've spammed or something then do your usual duty and then email staff). How do you make users admins on your wiki?
I want to add some admins on my wiki but I don't know how to. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pacsonic9000 (talk • contribs)
- Here are some ways.
- Go to the target user's userpage, and you can find the "Change user groups" button in the "Tools" section on the sidebar. Click it, and check/uncheck the permissions you want to give/take.
- Simply type
https://SUBDOMAIN.miraheze.org/wiki/Special:UserRights/USERNAME
(SUBDOMAIN should be replaced with the subdomain of your wiki and USERNAME with the target user's username), and check/uncheck the permissions you want to give/take.

Special:ManageWiki* pages are being retired
Hi everyone,
Just an informal notice to all that in a few days (likely the 3rd of June), I intend to merge changes into production (not yet done but will post a link when they are in code) to resolve T4409. The task is about retiring all the different variants of Special:ManageWiki into a single use page to reduce code footprint, increase usability and make future more complicated workflows easier to handle. Summary of essential changes will be:
- Special:ManageWiki will remain as it is.
- Special:ManageWikiExtensions will redirect to Special:ManageWiki/extensions
- Special:ManageWikiSettings will redirect to Special:ManageWiki/settings
- Special:ManageWikiPermissions{/$group} will redirect to Special:ManageWiki/permissions{/$group}
- Special:ManageWikiNamespaces{/$namespace} will redirect to Special:ManageWiki/namespaces{/$namespace}
Only a wiki's main settings (those displayed on Special:ManageWiki) will be manageable on metawiki. Management of extensions and settings will follow permissions and namespaces and only be manageable on the wiki themselves. This is to increase local logging, clean up metawiki's logs, reduce change footprint and reduce code complexity.
The community is reminded about the existence of Wiki managers, a permission which no longer will work on metawiki and will be removed when the code is deployed. The community should make arrangements it deems fit before the date of June 3rd - I will happily delay deployment to allow proceedings to be closed formally by either someone else or myself, but will not delay deployment to keep the current system in place.
Thanks, John (talk) 02:57, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
Number of articles
I recently imported content from another wiki. Now, my wiki says NUMBEROFPAGES is 2,964 (an accurate number, I assume), but NUMBEROFARTICLES is 1. What is wrong here? Do the pages not qualify as articles? Is there a problem with the code? Gfdgsgxgzgdrc (talk) 22:18, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

Is Miraheze politically correct?
As I have read in the terms of use, you must comply with the laws of California and the Netherlands, in addition to not promoting hate speech. However, there are some doubts I have about it. When I was in Wikia, they forced me to be politically correct (for example: you can't criticize the LGBT community, even if it is a constructive and polite criticism; you can't written the n-word or you will be banned, even if it's for explanatory reasons). The rules of Miraheze indicate that this wiki network is neutral, so I would like to know what is forbidden to do with specific topics:
- Talk about feminism: Write an article explaining how this issue is related to the topic of a certain wiki. Mention in what way it affects positively or negatively. This article will be written formally and politely.
- Same as above, but with other sensitive topics such as:
- LGBT community and movement.
- Left-wing and right-wing ideologies and their derivatives.
- Some taboos like: pedophilia, zoophilia and other rare fetishism (these articles will be written modestly and sensitive/offensive images will not be used) .
- Some religions like: Christianity, Islam, Judaism (the most sensitive), Buddhism.
- Some taboo practices such as: cannibalism, abortion.
- Is there a topic that we should not touch?
- Same as above, but with other sensitive topics such as:
- Moderation of comments: As the size of a wiki increases, the comments received may be so many that some may escape the reach of moderators or administrators. It is possible that comments appear with malicious intentions.
- For example, I received a comment from someone who used the "soft" version of the n-word, is not there any problem with that?: https://giantess.miraheze.org/wiki/Ochiko_Terada#comment-17
- What happens if the n-word is written? Is there automatic banning or not? Is it forbidden to do it or not?
- Are there words that are forbidden to write?
Obviously, if someone is going to touch on some topics, he/she will be done for informative reasons, and he/she gets to show negative aspects of these topics (something like the critical vision of a certain community), he/she will be for informational reasons and not to promote hatred . Example:
- Informational text (omniscient narrator): "The Minecraft community hates the Fortnite community, due to the following reasons: ..."
- Hate Speech (protagonist narrator): "We, the Minecraft community, must abhor and attack the Fortnite community for the following reasons: ..."
I know that this subject could bother some, but I need to get rid of doubts before I make a mistake. It's better to prevent. Thanks. --PaladinDeGigantas (talk) 02:57, 4 June 2019 (UTC)

- We don’t elect to ban underage users, we’re legally obligated to under the same laws as Wikia. John (talk) 01:01, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
- Both Wikia and Miraheze falls under US jurisdiction (as the financial stuff is handled in the US, and we have server in the US), and under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), both are required to get a consent. It is too complex to comply with such requirement (See the Compliance section), so if you don't treat Private Information of people under 13 (Of course Miraheze might be trating people under 13 unknowingly, but the point of COPPA is "Knowingly".), you don't have to deal with the complex business. — revi 01:34, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
- Miraheze, Wikia and the Wikimedia Foundation might be treating people under 13 unknowingly, based on evidence when I was on Wikia. Some of the users who are underage have already been blocked until they turn 13. Miraheze however, is not an organisation, so the COPPA law might not be applied to this wiki. After reading some articles on Wikipedia I'm still confused about what "copyright" and "fair use" really mean in a wiki hosted by Miraheze, especially regarding media content. Miraheze is a big wiki hosting service. Do you have a company as this wiki “Miraheze, Inc.”? If you have it, than who is the Founder? Executive Director? Chair of the Board? May you also add emails like emergencymiraheze.org? Fungster (contribs - email - CA) 07:50, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
- We are currently not incorporated yet. Though we plan to file for non profit status in the future. Because we are not incorporated, we currently do not have a board yet. We currently do not offer a emergency
address as we cannot commit to such a thing. Though we have a staff
address, Also if you deem necessary, please notify relevant authorities in an emergency. Paladox (talk) 16:41, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
While I understand the benefits of incorporation, I would say that given the current drama with the WMF vs. Wikipedia right now, that maybe perhaps we would reconsider being incorporated, especially since we do promote the "community driven" aspect.. Just my opinion. Amanda Catherine (talk) 22:19, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
- Legal protection of ourselves is the upmost priority and is the main driver of incorporation. John (talk) 22:43, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
- What do you mean by "legal protection"? Being incorporated isn't going to make you more immune to lawsuits or make people less likely to file them. What I'm concerned about is establishing a gap between the community, of which currently the stewards and more or less the sysadmins are considered to be members, and the "powers that be" namely paid employees with some authority over the community. While Miraheze is a large service and is ever growing, I'd be afraid that the service wouldn't survive if we ever had something like the current WMF vs. Wikipedia drama unfold here. Besides, I wouldn't want to see Miraheze adopt some of the policies that the WMF has, many of which are contributors to the current drama, such as the Foundation's supposed right to impose global bans that are not appealable to anybody except Jimbo, without discussion and without stating the reason for said bans.
- TL;DR I don't want to see Miraheze become something like the WMF where there is a disconnect between the Foundation or the Board and the community. The way it is now where the "staff members" are also community members is the way it should be. Amanda Catherine (talk) 23:24, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
- You are correct incorporated isn't going to make Miraheze immune to law suits, but it means I can't be taken to court in the UK personally for my actions in the capacity I take as a system administrator - as I am then no longer personally legally responsible for my actions on behalf of Miraheze - but while currently I am 100% possible. Further, it protects Miraheze against local law enforcement. An example would be if the UK police give a warrant for me to release information Miraheze stores - I have to hand it over. If not, I can be arrested. While if Miraheze is an organisation, the warrant has to be made out to Miraheze and can't be made out to myself. Miraheze is not in a position to hire staff - therefore we will always be "community members". Though of course, nothing stops us requesting help from non-community members as has happened in the past. Some people like Paladox came direct, they weren't selected from the community we had already. John (talk) 01:37, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
- So where is the "company" "Miraheze, Inc." founded? In the Netherlands or in California? If you did have a Board, who will it contain? Where is the headquarters? Fungster (contribs - email - CA) 23:52, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
- It is founded no where. When it is, it will be in the US. The board will likely contain existing staff members within reason and otherwise. The registered offices will be up to Labster but likely his premises or a property he owns/runs/control unrelated to Miraheze. John (talk) 01:37, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
- If the headquarter building does exist, you might want to create a page called Miraheze Office. Fungster (contribs - email - CA) 03:41, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
- Miraheze wiki hosting server have 2 co-founders, which is John and Southparkfan, I think this may let them for decision whether to build the Miraheze Office in the future. What was Amanda Catherine have mentioned at above are completely right, Wikipedia are currently having drama, I also don't want to see Miraheze wiki one day become like WMF. - We definitely need to build this Miraheze Office to make the service grow bigger Fungster (contribs - email - CA) 12:11, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
