How to change mobile editor font?

Hello, I need help with something. How do I change the mobile editor font to Courier (just like Wikipedia)?

I think you can do it by editing MediaWiki:Mobile.css.--開拓者 (talk) 12:02, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Visual Editor

How can i enable visual editor on my wiki? AleksanderTv (talk)

Check this page. Register on Phabricator, and fill in the form. Then someone (I think one of the sysadmins) will enable the feature for you.--開拓者 (talk) 11:41, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Are VPN and hosting IPs against No open proxies policy?

If so, I have some lists of IPs that should be soft blocked globally.

  • https://www.vpnhub.me/ - this one lists only top 2000 IPs. You need to check out all countries in order to block them all (ex: this page for Japanese IPs. The list of countries is shown here)
  • http://www.vpngate.net/en/ - IPs listed as nodes of VPN Gate. Usually they list only IPs currently online, so I guess admins should check it out frequently.

Just for help.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs) 11:00, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Create wiki with existing database

Hello, is it possible to create a wiki here with an existing database? The database is here, and the name I would like to have for the wiki is "wkup". Please let me know if you need something else. Thanks a lot!--Micru (talk) 14:09, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, if your database is in a format compatible with MediaWiki, you can first request a wiki and import (or ask to import, on Phabricator) your data after the wiki is created. This page might also be useful. If it's not, I'm not sure.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs) 14:35, 13 June 2018 (UTC)(corrected expression)--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs) 14:54, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Problems with Template Formatting on Wiki

My community and I have been working on creating this comprehensive wiki for our group. However, we have been having difficulties with properly formatted templates that react with our text in a visually pleasing way.

An example of one of our pages: [1]

What we are trying to emulate: [2]

At the top of the page, we have a template which should be on the right-most side of the page, with text blocked to the right, like most wiki templates. We have gone over the code and cannot figure any possible reason why it shouldn't work. We did copy over the coding from another wiki site (which also utilizes Miraheze) but their was no change and every template as this rather unappealing appearance to it.

If someone could help us to figure out this issue, we would be most appreciative.

Hi. I added float:right; to your template, and now it works fine :) --開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 12:58, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

Change logo & favicon

So how do I change the logo and the favicon? Which size should the logo have? Can it be rectangular or must it be square? --Micru (talk) 16:56, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

The logo can be any shape, the size limit is 135x135px however. Both can be changed now by going to Special Pages, under Wiki Management (click Manage a wiki) MZD (talk) 22:23, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

How to handle interwiki requests

So, I have seen some interwiki requests handled by adding the requested prefixes to the interwiki table on the local wiki. When I handled a interwiki Request here for the first time, after I did it in the same manner, @John: told me that no, it should be added by a meta sysop to the Global, (Meta) interwiki table. I would like this to be clarified as to how it should be done. MacFan4000 (Talk Contribs) 20:20, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

Reasonable requests should be handled globally. Unreasonable global requests should be local. Things like language codes should be local or changes to existing ones because they conflict with a global prefix. It's discretion but global is preferred unless unreasonable. John (talk) 20:24, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
I see no reason for prefixes to be global when they were only requested for specific wikis. MacFan4000 (Talk Contribs) 20:28, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
Global good. On the same argument I see no reason for user pages to be global when they're made on one wiki :) John (talk) 20:29, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

Request for wiki creator for 開拓者

Hi, and I'd like to ask for the wiki creator permission. I've read the guide and translated it into Japanese (my native language), and I understand what I should do. I should also note that I'm familiar with Japanese wikis (as a Japanese native) and I'm able to check requests made by Japanese users better than non-Japanese users, which have been increasing (and sometimes being problematic, as vandals are creating "unofficial" versions without permissions of the original Japanese wikis outside Miraheze) recently.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 03:07, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

Request for Wiki Creator for Cy

Hello. I would like to request wiki creator. I have read the wiki creator's guide, and was inactive, but not anymore. I also see a large amount of requests, because of my timezone, one where almost no wiki creators are active. I would like to hear opinions on this. Thanks, and sincerely, Cy connect 23:20, 26 June 2018 (UTC)

Seems ok.  Approved by me. MacFan4000 (Talk Contribs) 01:19, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
OK, but I couldn't find any log actually showing s/he has been actually permitted. Could you reconfirm what's going on?--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 03:24, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
The wiki creator is given a bit after it is approved. Sincerely, Cy connect 04:22, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
Just a quick note pleasantly surprised this is how this happened. Wiki Creator is granted at the discretion of any system administrator, but system administrators (who are also not crats or stewards) are not supposed to regularly using their userrights and userrights-interwiki permissions. So MacFan4000 (a sysadmin) approved the request and John (a steward) assigned the permissions. PuppyKun (talk) 17:10, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

XML Page Import Protocol

Hi, I just started my wiki here today. I am trying to import all of the pages that I had on my Wikia, however, I am having difficulties doing so. Whenever I try to import my pages I get the error message "Import failed: No interwiki prefix was supplied". I'm unfamiliar with the Interwiki prefix, what should I be doing? CerebralPolicy (talk)

I looked at the FAQ I think I have a better idea of what to do now CerebralPolicy (talk) 03:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

I'm not sure about your imports, but what I can say for sure is that you haven't set your logo in a proper format. See this page for more details.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 04:16, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, I have everything imported, but I'm also having issues with some Infoboxes like this, it works perfectly fine on another wiki, I'm not sure why. CerebralPolicy (talk) 14:29, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
Wherever you took the infobox module/template from, you also need to copy over the page MediaWiki:Common.css. It contains all the styling for the infoboxes and will resolve all the display issues with them. -- Void Whispers 16:10, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
I have copied over the Common.css from Wikipedia, so they should work. Indeed, the templates do display but they display a generic "Unknown" instead of the Military infobox template, I don't know why because the css import worked with the country infoboxes. CerebralPolicy (talk) 16:34, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
Hmm, for whatever reason, Template:Infobox seemed to have gotten stuck on a revision that included something about wikia-infoboxes. I restored it to the version that is compatible with the national military infobox, but that might break other things. (but hopefully not) -- Void Whispers 16:45, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

Visual Editor not scaling SVG files

Sorry to post again in such a short period. I have run into a conundrum, I'm not exactly sure where this question should be directed. I really like using the visual editor but I have noticed that it displays SVG files at full size. This is a bit problematic because I use SVG files for my flags. When I go to edit this page the flag in the infobox scales to the default 600x300px size. I was going to go on phabricator until I noticed that the visual editor did the same thing on this page. So it seems to be universal. However, it does not do this when using visual editor on Wikipedia, for example when editing Wikipedia:Canada the flag in the infobox stays the same size as it does when viewing the page. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm posting it here because you all were very helpful earlier. - CerebralPolicy (talk) 20:07, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

I have checked that it actually happens myself, but I'm not sure why. I think it's related to the configuration of Miraheze, so you should ask it on Phab.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 20:40, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Possibility of moving Radlines to Miraheze

Hello,

I started the wiki radlines in Miraheze (then under the name radviser, at radviser.miraheze.org). I then moved the project to Civihosting, now at radlines.org, where it has been further developed. It now has several extensions, such as CommentStreams as well as its own layout settings (menus, license choices for uploads, introduction at the Create user page etc.). Due to slow servers at Civihosting I am now considering moving the project to Miraheze again. First, I would like to know:

  • If the project would happen to grow and be as popular as for example Radiopaedia, would the servers here still manage to have relatively fast loading times?
  • The project is non-profit and I will soon make it an official organization as such. Eventually, it will have its own financials and "Donate"-page. Does it seem alright that 10% of the donations will then go to Miraheze as Internet hosting? I compared to Wikipedia's 6% for the same category [3].

Best regards,
Mikael Häggström (talk) 09:06, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

Actually, I'll wait and see if the slow loading issue can be fixed at the current host. Mikael Häggström (talk) 14:23, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

Help with the proofreadpage extension

I was wondering if anyone has ever used or has an understanding of the proofread page extension I would like to use this properly on my Great War wiki and am in the process of trying it out. I have most of it working (having had to include a few other things to make it function correctly) with the exception of two things that I can see.

  1. There is a Lua error message on my page here compared with Wikisource's same page here I don't know what this is or how to fix this.
  2. The page numbers, shown thus in square parentheses: [1] [2] [3] etc., which when hovering over highlights the text for that page (of the original source), don't appear on my page or any other page. This is the one main thing I really want to work but doesn't.

I would really appreciate any help in trying to fix these as the first issue is just aesthetically unpleasing to the eye and the second issue is the main the reason I wanted to use this extension. Apologies for being absent on meta for quite some time; I've had some stuff to deal with and have been busy with adding pages on my wiki. Thanks. Borderman (Talk) 21:12, 3 July 2018 (UTC)

Ah, the first error has nothing to do with the extension. I'll have to try and clean up some of your modules as they seem to require extraneous features. The other one is a script or gadget. I'll find out what you need shortly. -- Void Whispers 00:54, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
The script you're looking for is PageNumbers.js, and can be loaded with mw.loader.load('//en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:PageNumbers.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');. -- Void Whispers 00:56, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
@Void: Thanks for having a look, and so quickly too. What do you mean by it can be loaded using the code above? Do you mean this is all that's needed on MediaWiki:PageNumbers.js to load the appropriate code directly from Wikisource? I've haven't done anything like this before so don't know how it works, however, this is what I've done. Is it a case of waiting to see if the changes take effect? Borderman (Talk) 08:11, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
@Void: It doesn't seem to be working, did I do it correctly? Borderman (Talk) 06:39, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
Should have been more clear here, but the best place to put that line would be MediaWiki:Common.js as it won't load for anyone in its current place. -- Void Whispers 16:09, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
@Void: Ok, tried that. How long does it usually take to work as it's still not show those page numbers? Does it matter where that code is placed on Commons.js? Borderman (Talk) 20:54, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
Update: there seems to be some strange behavior happening. The page numbers have appeared, but only when logged out. When logged in they disappear. In addition to this, when hovering over the numbers, the highlighted area is not highlighting the correct text. Also, the numbers don't have enough indented white space around them. Is this a skinning issue or is something else at play here? Thanks. Borderman (Talk) 07:24, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Help with infobox

Hi, I've been having trouble trying to get my infobox to work correctly (the template in question shown here). I've been trying to create a cell box (if that's the right word for it) for it and for it to be shifted to the right (shown here). I'm very new to the MediaWiki style of editing after editing on Wikia for the past few years so any help would be great! Coldcherrii (talk) 02:56, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

You are missing styling most likely from MediaWiki:Common.css, depending on where you took the infoboxes from. I'm not too sure since I don't usually deal with Wikia templates. I think what you need is the styling:
.infobox {
    background-color: #f2f2f2;
    border: 1px solid #cccccc;
    clear: right;
    color: #3a3a3a;
    float: right;
    margin-bottom: .5em;
    margin-left: 1em;
    padding: .2em;
}
But I'm not sure that will handle everything. -- Void Whispers 03:04, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
It worked so far! Thank you so much! Coldcherrii (talk) 03:09, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

How much longer are we going to be without images?

I have a major publicity push going for my wiki the month of July, and images started acting up two days into this initiative (no uploads, then no images at all, then images, and now no images at all again.)

What is the ETA of having full image functionality be restored?

And why did we not get advance notice of something that would make such a major impact on all of the wikis on Miraheze? If I had known in advance, I could have re-scheduled the publicity push, but it's too late for that now. I saw no notices of any planned upgrades.

Bots and anyone interested in creating one

I was wondering if anyone has a particular skill in creating and using bots. I am starting to get going now with my Great War transcribing site, having recently installed the Proofread Page extension, and one of the laborious tasks for each book in the early stages is creating a new page for every page of a book. If a book has 600+ pages, like the one I've just started, you can imagine it is a time-consuming process even if you only have to click on "create," click the "Not proofread" button and then save. It is, after all a raw page that hasn't been proofread, but the page still needs creating nonetheless. I am hoping a bot will be able to this for me so I can get on with the actual proofreading, which in itself is a lengthy process. Is anyone, with a particular interest or skill in this field, able to create a bot with this task in mind to help and save me considerable time. If not, no worries, just thought I'd ask at this early juncture. Thanks. Borderman (Talk) 15:39, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

I know @Void: and @Zppix: have created bots. Reception123 (talk) (C) 17:31, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
Depending on where the book material originates from, I don't think it would be too difficult to get something working, especially since it looks like those pages can be altered and created with a standard edit and default to "Not proofread". -- Void Whispers 18:10, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
I have been using archive.org as my base for out-of-copyright material, some I'm interested in and many I'm not. The main current one, I noticed later, is on Wikisource as well and I'm using .djvu files. It would be great if a bot could be created to take the burden of creating the page first, and as it is literally one click on the "Not proofread" button and save, the operation, at least for a bot, I am hoping, would be fairly simple (not that I actually understand how they work). @Void: Please do let me know if you're interested in creating one. As always, your help makes a big difference, cheers. Borderman (Talk) 18:58, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
I am not to familiar with proofread ext and stuff like that when it comes to bots, so i wont be any help here... sorry! Zppix (Meta | CVT Member | talk to me) 17:26, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
@Borderman: Since this could be useful for people outside Miraheze as well, maybe you should also try asking around MediaWiki.org, since there might be someone willing to help there. Reception123 (talk) (C) 19:00, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
@Zppix: No problem pal. Borderman (Talk) 20:29, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
@Reception123: I don't actually have an account on MediaWiki.org. It would seem a bit odd to create one and my first post there to be a request for someone to create a bot for me. I think I'd have to establish myself a little first. For the time being it looks like I'm going to have do this the longer, more laborious way, which in itself isn't too bad, it's just boring. I just wish I knew how to code stuff! Borderman (Talk) 20:29, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Problems with images and thumbnails

Is anyone else experiencing some problems with images and thumbnails not showing? I don't know if the .djvu or .pdf files are corrupt or there is an issue after uploading. One of my .djvu files has missing thumbnails (and I need these so I can see what to transcribe) and then I tried to upload a .pdf version of the same file and I received this error notice: "An unknown error occurred in storage backend "miraheze-swift". This just started this evening. Any solutions? Borderman (Talk) 22:02, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi, which wiki is this for? Paladox (talk) 22:08, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
@Paladox: It's for thegreatwar.miraheze.org I think all of the .djvu files are affected in some way or another, but it does seem quite sporadic as to which images within those files are displaying and which aren't. They are accessible from the Transcribing projects page, and any with "Yes" in the first column "Index" has an index of the .djvu files. Clicking on random pages reveals some images not displaying, with the following message: "Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination". Other images are fine and display properly; it's purely random. This is what happened the other day when work was being done on the images update/upgrade etc. Cheers. All of my images have gone now, including my logo. Is anyone else having the same issue or is it just me? Borderman (Talk) 06:47, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
    • Hi, your images now work. Paladox (talk) 17:06, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
@Paladox: Thanks for the fix. What causes the issue? Borderman (Talk) 17:55, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
Permission errors on your wiki's image container. We are considering switching from swift to a alternative as it seems since the switch to swift there has been more problems. We will announce before doing it though (switch). Paladox (talk) 17:57, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
Has this happened on a few other wikis then, permission errors on image containers? I didn't know image containers had permissions associated with them. I noticed that my images didn't always load properly, they were a bit temperamental at times but they gave up entirely last night right in the middle of some transcribing I was working on. I've always got other things I can work though. Borderman (Talk) 18:25, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
Yep other wiki's have had this problem. The permission is by default only read only and write only to the user. We have all containers apart from one open to anons (so you doin't need a container account to view the images). Sometimes it seems it is loosing the permission to view the image as a anon. Paladox (talk) 18:27, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Why not create something like Wikimedia Commons (a shared image repository for all Miraheze wikis)?

Hi. I'd like to propose to create a wiki like Wikimedia Commons here on Miraheze. Miraheze hosts over 2000 wikis, but, as far as I know, there's no wiki working as a globally-shared image repository, though there's one for templates.

By creating such wiki,

  1. Users won't have to upload the same image on every wiki, when necessary. Users can use it on all wikis by uploading it to Commons.
  2. Miraheze can save its disc space, because we can reduce uploads of duplicated images on multiple wikis.

Since this wiki will be a wiki that affects all other Miraheze wikis, I think it should be run by Miraheze personnel (such as Stewards), if we are to create one. However, before making a decision, I propose that this issue of creating Commons should be discussed by the community, thus here I am to post this.

Thanks for reading.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 03:32, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

I don't think we need to do the work to create an analog of Wikimedia Commons, when Miraheze wikis have automatic access to the real thing; please read here. Spıke (talk)05:04 13-Jul-2018
I know that we can use images from Wikimedia Commons, but we have to visit the website OUTSIDE Miraheze to upload images, if we wish to use it as something like "Miraheze Commons." On the other hand, by creating our own Commons, we no longer have to create another account to go to Wikimedia. I should also note that some images can be deleted because they aren't necessary for Wikimedia and its projects, even if we need them on multiple Miraheze wikis (since Wikimedia and Miraheze have different policies), while creating our own Commons wiki will allow us to upload any images as long as we follow our Content Policy.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 05:27, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
I don't think this is a bad idea. It did seem a little redundant to me at first because I have used Commons for quite a few images and it's a simple way to instantly show them in your articles without the hassle of uploading, adding descriptions and licences, however, what harm could it do to have our own Commons? I know I have a ton of photos I could upload but whether they'd be any use to anyone is another matter. Borderman (Talk) 18:05, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

I have several problems with my wiki.

Hi. I'd like to report several problems regarding my wiki.

  1. I can't see Special:RecentChanges, with an error "504 Gateway Time-out" returned. Other pages are displayed fine, and it's only seen on RecentChanges.
  2. I need to use the alternative widget of Extension:html5mediator shown at Extensions in order to play some mp3 files. However, the link provided there is a link to a private wiki, and I cannot see the contents, nor import it to my wiki. I need a valid link that enables us to check how it works.

I need a solution for these issues. Could anyone help me? Thanks.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 18:33, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

It seems that the problem of RecentChanges only happens when I try to see 500 recent changes (when limited to 250, it worked properly). Do you have any ideas why this happens?--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 03:31, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

Does anyone know how to make an alternative for mw:Extension:DynamicFunctions?

Hi, I've migrated our old wiki here on Miraheze, and have a technical issue regarding mw:Extension:DynamicFunctions. Some of our pages depends on this function and doesn't work. However, at the same time, I think Miraheze will not install this extension because it's currently archived. Thus, we need an alternative. Can anyone help us with this? Thanks for helping.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 02:51, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

P.S. The wiki in question is Usopedia. For the pages that should be modded, I'll provide you a list ASAP (just not now, because I'm kind of packed up, but general solutions are welcome).--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 02:51, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

ManageWiki help page

Hi folks, I've setup User:Void/ManageWiki in order to have a help page/user documentation page for Special:ManageWiki. If there's anything critical missing, please either suggest it, or add it. Otherwise, I'll be moving it into the mainspace and linking to it from the FAQ and request features pages. If anyone thinks images are necesary, I can plop those in as well. -- Void Whispers 18:40, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

That's great, just what we needed. As soon as the newest change for ManageWiki is rolled out I will update the page with the relevant information (there will be a separate extensions page for convenience). This help page should also definitely be linked somehow (help button?) From the special page. Reception123 (talk) (C) 20:17, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
Looks good, just what we need. This is something I brought up in the year 3 survey, well not exactly a help page but certainly more information about the extensions on the Manage a Wiki special page. It isn't automatically apparent, especially for new users maybe, what it is you are supposed to do here; and the extensions don't even have a heading (to say that's what they are). It looks obvious to those already in the know but there will always be others that aren't sure. This is why I suggested to have a couple of sentences about what the extensions section does and how it works etc. directly above the list of extensions on the Manage a Wiki page. Your help page material though is beneficial to all, good job. Borderman (Talk) 21:13, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
@Borderman: Recently, we've implemented links to the MediaWiki.org pages of the extensions into ManageWiki, so you can read all about them by clicking on the links. Reception123 (talk) (C) 10:50, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
@Reception123: I noticed that yesterday and thought that was a great improvement. The Manage a Wiki special page is huge step forward for Miraheze and an impressive leap for user front-end wiki management. I, personally, think it's a great tool and look forward to seeing any other features that may appear in the future. Great work by the creators/authors. Borderman (Talk) 17:20, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
  • I've updated the page with the most recent changes and pushed it into the mainspace. I'll find places in the FAQ and elsewhere to link to the page from. If you have any suggestions for pages that should get links, let me know and I can add them soon. -- Void Whispers 21:07, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

Styling for login and preferences pages

I was just wondering why the login page and the preferences page doesn't have the same styling that I have included in Vector.css. These seem to be the only two pages that do not use my additional styling. Is there a particular reason for this? Is it a security issue or something? I would like to be able to have both these pages use the same styling as everything else if possible. Just let me know if it requires a ticket on phabricator. Thanks. Borderman (Talk) 21:04, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Certain special pages don't load custom styling. I'm not actually sure what needs to get done in order to do styling to those pages. It might not be possible without completely customizing those pages. -- Void Whispers 18:42, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
@Void: I have had a look on Mediawiki.org and found this: Manual:$wgAllowSiteCSSOnRestrictedPages Do you think this something Miraheze would allow? Borderman (Talk) 20:59, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
@John: What do you think about the above? Reception123 (talk) (C) 10:51, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
I'm cautious. It's a very valid security issue, esp given how we operate with unified logins, unvetted administrators without a strong community backing, lack of trust etc and so on. I'm not saying yes, I'm not saying no - I'm leaving it as a judgement call. John (talk) 18:29, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
I don't want to ruffle any feathers. Just seems strange to have styling for the whole site except specific pages, especially when the styling is substantially different between those pages. If yes, then great. If not, that's fine too. Borderman (Talk) 20:39, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
What is the outcome of this? I'll go with whatever @John: says but a definite Yes or No is required then I can put this one to bed. Borderman (Talk) 21:16, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

New "interwiki admin" group for Miraheze (RfC?)

For a while now, we have a number of users unhappy with the fact that Special:Interwiki can only be edited by sysadmins, who would like to be able to edit their own interwiki as that would be more practical and easier for them. The reason for which interwiki is restricted for sysadmins is the fact that if any wiki administrator could edit it, they could link malicious sites (phishing, spam) and disguise them as wiki links, which can be dangerous for our users. Therefore, as a solution I would propose the creation of a new "inter-wiki" global group granted by sysadmins to some users who enter a certain criteria (TBD). I would like to know if the community is interested in such a thing, before starting an RfC. This group would be a global group only for changing interwiki, and would be granted to trusted users. These users would only change interwiki for the wikis who requested it (or for their own). Reception123 (talk) (C) 11:38, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

Comment: I agree with the basic idea. For the criteria, I have 2 drafts.
  • Draft 1: Users having autopatrolled permission on meta, and/or global staffs (Steward, Sysadmins, CVT, etc), indicating global trust.
  • Draft 2: Users fulfilling the draft 1 above or users who request the permission, and is supported by more than half of the voters (including, at least 1 staff).
--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 11:49, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
Incorrect information - we delegated interwiki management to meta admins not sysadmins. Therefore all it takes to increase this is more meta admins or a discussion on meta to increase it locally as we delegated this responsibility to meta to take it out of the global sysadmin purview. John (talk) 18:32, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
Theese day it does not make things much different, as only one of our sysadmins is not a local sysop. MacFan4000 (Talk Contribs) 19:06, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
Meta admin is waaay easier to get than sysadmin. It makes a massive difference. John (talk) 19:26, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
I think that most users who could have this right wouldn't really be interested in performing other Meta duties; they mostly just want to change their interwikis when they want, since many current requests take time, this would be way more convenient. I also think that interwiki should be something added locally to wikis, and the global Miraheze interwiki list should not be changed often. Reception123 (talk) (C) 22:52, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
About the interwikis. I'd rather [w:Example] link to Wikipedia in Spanish than Wikipedia in English. So that I don't have to write [w:es:Example] Wiki1776 (talk) 18:25, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
 Support MacFan4000 (Talk Contribs) 19:54, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
  • I think it would be useful to establish a global group to allow for editing local interwiki links (and not set that high of a bar on getting in). Further, users would be able to ask for either the permission or the assistance of a volunteer with the permission. However, I'm of the mind that we should keep the global list restricted to meta admins. -- Void Whispers 20:06, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
I agree with the global list idea. Since there is enough support for this proposal, I think an RfC can be started. Reception123 (talk) (C) 06:40, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
Please note that the the link for the RfC is Requests for Comment/Interwiki links editing. Reception123 (talk) (C) 11:59, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

jCarousel stopped working after logout

Has anyone used this before? It is a gadget (MediaWiki:Gadget-Carousel.js and .css), which took a bit of work to get it the way I wanted it. I've only recently incorporated it into my site but after last night it seems to have stopped working (here's a version on one of my user pages: User:Borderman/jCarousel). It is currently on my main page and as it is a one of the main elements I would like to get it working again. Any ideas how to fix it? Borderman (Talk) 12:17, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Correction: I should have said it stopped working as a guest (after logging out). Borderman (Talk) 12:20, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
Change the line on Gadgets-definition to * Carousel[ResourceLoader|default]|Carousel.js|Carousel.css and it should be automatically enabled for all users. -- Void Whispers 19:23, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
@Void: Thanks for the info. I have changed it and it works to a degree, however, the contents on my main page are transcluded from four different templates and the same problem is still there. The carousel works for guests on the original pages but not on transcluded pages. When logged in though the carousel then works on the transcluded pages. Is there a workaround for this? Borderman (Talk) 22:26, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Hmm, it works for me, both logged in and logged out, so I suspect it's a caching thing. -- Void Whispers 23:09, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
@Void: Yes, you are absolutely right. The one thing I usually check is the one thing I didn't do this time....rookie mistake. All working fine now, many thanks. Regarding cache etc., did you see the message I left on your talk page about the purge button? Borderman (Talk) 23:37, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Ah, I had forgotten about that. I took a look at it and for some reason it looks like it's defined by the extension and isn't easily modified. But, I still need to confirm. -- Void Whispers 23:41, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Wiki creator request by Centrist16

Hello everyone, I'm Centrist16 and I have been a member on Miraheze for a little more than a year now. I have spent most of my time here transitioning content and the community of Constructed Worlds Wiki from Wikia over to Miraheze at the Altverse Wiki as its founder. I have been editing and participating MediaWiki communities for nearly 10 years now, and I made the decision to migrate from Wikia to Miraheze because I found that Miraheze was much more faithful to the software and format sites such as Wikipedia currently use. I have been an active contributor there and recently I have decided to expand my scope more broadly by participating on Meta. Whenever there has been a bug or report, I have filed a report on Phabricator and I have joined Miraheze's Discord in order to connect with fellow users. I am interested in furthering the needs of Miraheze by assisting it as a wiki creator. I read that despite the growing number of wiki creators/global sysops as of late, Miraheze continues to suffer from understaffing due to various reasons (time constraints, real life commitments, etc.). If I join, I seek to uphold the role faithfully, and render help diligently to new users who are interested in using Miraheze's services. I have read and familiarized myself with the wiki creator's guide. centrist16 | Talk | | 01:33, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Image error message

When creating new pages in the proofread extension the image of a page is supposed to visible side by side with the text to be transcribed/edited, however, at the moment the images appear a bit hit and miss. Some appear and others don't, and this is the error message in place of the image:

Error creating thumbnail: /bin/bash: pnmtojpeg: command not found ddjvu: writing pnm file: Broken pipe

What does this mean? When saving the page some images then appear, but others still don't until I leave the page then go back to it later. It's not a major problem at the moment but the images should always be visible regardless of whether it's a new page or an existing one. If the image isn't available at the time I would like to edit the text, this is going to be a problem. As always, suggestions/help appreciated. Thanks. Borderman (Talk) 08:39, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi, we have located where the problem is and why it was intermittent. We were missing a package which was installed on one of the mw* where the others did not have it. Resolved in https://github.com/miraheze/puppet/commit/6cd7ec7f6c0553eaf70469f3c141bb1c3ab190d7 Paladox (talk) 13:05, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

/me thanks @John: for him spotting the actual error. Paladox (talk) 21:01, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Internal error and fatal exception

Has anyone else encountered this? Right at the end of proofreading a page when saving I started getting a lot of internal errors with the following message: [4efc82a7362f06155d32e0df] 2018-07-25 22:00:43: Fatal exception of type "MWException"

and also:

MediaWiki internal error.

Original exception: [88c56c259a845049fa6b4feb] 2018-07-25 22:05:08: Fatal exception of type "MWException"

Exception caught inside exception handler.

Set $wgShowExceptionDetails = true; at the bottom of LocalSettings.php to show detailed debugging information.

Refreshing a page sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Is there some work being carried out? Borderman (Talk) 22:08, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi, we have fixed the problem. We re ran LC. Also please include the wiki which is having the problem in the future :) Paladox (talk) 00:14, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
It also happened at Usopedia at around 8 am this morning (JST). However, I guess it's already fixed according to your report, and it seems to be working fine for now.--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 03:02, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
@Paladox: Thanks for sorting that out. I have two wikis and I'm only working on one of them at the moment, thegreatwar wiki, So all my queries etc. will be associated with that wiki. But if I remember at the time I will include which wiki for clarification. Cheers. Borderman (Talk) 07:48, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Wiki URL change request

Hey! I wanted to know if it's possible to change the "adventuretime" in to "digimon" in the adventuretimewiki's URL given a change in focus. If it is, then I would like for it to not redirect to our new url if possible. Here's the URL to the wiki I'm talking about

https://adventuretime.miraheze.org (I just want https://adventuretime replaced with https://digimon if it's doable)

Thanks in advanced!-Jordan D (talk) 07:57, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

@Jordan D: Moved from SN Yes, that is possible. Would you be able to request that on Phabricator to facilitate tracking? Reception123 (talk) (C) 08:03, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
That would be nice, yes. Thanks. Sorry for replying so late, I didn't see this.-Jordan D (talk) 16:04, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

Special:Import not working

I'm trying to import templates to my wiki (https://hasanistan.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page), like I had done before successfully, and it does not work and comes up with "Import failed: No page to import!".

Please help, thanks in advance! -OIMGov (talk) 18:40, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

Maybe your templates have already been imported. Did you check the log?--開拓者 (The Pioneer) (talk/contribs | global🌎) 05:01, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

Since 1.31 importing pages doesn't link to editors who didn't move yet - any fix?

I know this depends on MediaWiki software and not on Miraheze, but I wonder if there's a fix. Importing pages now requires to give an interlink prefix and you can specify whether to assign edits to existing contributors or not, while before it just linked to their pages, whether they existed or not. There's two issues with this new behavior:

  • The user is now displayed as interwiki prefix>user, for example "it>Wedhro", instead of just "Wedhro", which is useless in a wiki which moved from a different website and doesn't differentiate users by their nationality, and doesn't look good on history pages;
  • The user page is linked only if the user already created an account, so moving a wiki, tweaking it and only then allowing users to join will zero their edits and make their username in histories not clickable, which is very, very annoying.

Did someone have to deal with this? Would Miraheze staff consider changing this behavior or downgrade to 1.30 in order to prevent headhaches from people who want to move here without losing everything?--Wedhro (talk) 15:09, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Changing this behavior is not really possible. We can, however, attach the edits to a user's account on request. -- Void Whispers 20:11, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Are you allowed to evade blocks that are obviously made in bad-faith or are otherwise invalid?

This is something that came up in the #miraheze IRC channel this evening regarding several recent CVT actions. Apparently, several accounts were globally locked and several IP ranges globally blocked for “mass block evasion” on a particular wiki. However, nobody involved in performing these actions has been able to clearly state what the original offense was on the original account or IP. “Block evasion” in and of itself can never be the initial reason for one to be blocked. In order to be blocked for block evasion, one must have also been blocked for something else under a different account.

My question is, if that original something else (whatever it may be) was obviously invalid or made in bad-faith, are you, as a user blocked in bad-faith, allowed to evade that block, assuming that you don’t engage in any behavior that would warrant a valid block? To put that in perspective, consider the following hypothetical scenarios:

  • 12:00 6 August 2018 Admin (talk) blocked Example (talk) with an expiry time of indefinite (Vandalism-only account)
  • 12:00 6 August 2018 Admin (talk) blocked Example (talk) with an expiry time of indefinite (Because I feel like it)
  • 12:00 6 August 2018 Admin (talk) blocked Example (talk) with an expiry time of indefinite (no reason given)

Of the above 3 examples, only the first block is valid. It is perfectly acceptable to indefinitely block a vandalism-only account. However, the other two blocks are not valid. It is not acceptable to indefinitely block someone just “because you feel like it” or without a reason altogether. Therefore, if you are the owner of an account that has been blocked in bad-faith or for an invalid reason, like the second or third examples above, do you have the right to evade that block since the original block was invalid?

If the first user above (vandalism-only account) creates a sock that is also a vandalism-only account, that’s not acceptable. However, if the second or third users above create a second account and continue to contribute productively, without violating any policies, is that “valid blocke evasion”? Amanda Catherine (talk) 23:50, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

It is blocked to evade period. It is disruptive. Zppix (Meta | CVT Member | talk to me) 23:54, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
My point is, it’s not disruptive if you’re evading a bad-faith block. An admin who blocks in bad-faith should be desysopped. As long as you don’t engage in personal attacks or anything else blockable, you do not have the right to be invalidly blocked. Amanda Catherine (talk) 23:59, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Then it is a local community issue. Not a global one or otherwise. John (talk) 00:00, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
And if the issue fails to be resolved locally? At the end of the day, if I’ve been blocked by a rouge or bad-faith admin, I do not deserve to be essentially kicked off the project for no reason. Amanda Catherine (talk) 00:02, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Then contact stewards who will look and try and resolve it on your behalf. If the community can't resolve it, stewards can act as an intermediate source to try and resolve an issue otherwise there is not a lot. John (talk) 00:04, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Then be an adult and move on if your blocked for invalid reasons to begin with. Zppix (Meta | CVT Member | talk to me) 00:04, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Why should any user allow themselves to be walked over by a bad-faith admin? Amanda Catherine (talk) 00:18, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Why should a community put up with a user who makes tens of accounts to intentionally evade a block placed on the user regardless of reason? Local communities decide their policies so why should one person of said community have the ability to say what is valid and what administrators can do? John (talk) 00:23, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Because a local community that says that it is acceptable for admins to block users for no reason, or “just because they feel like it” is acting in bad-faith. You need to have a valid reason for kicking someone out from a community. Amanda Catherine (talk) 00:24, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
If a policy says "administrators can decide who is a member of this community" then blocking users "just because they feel like it" is valid and not bad faith. Is it a good policy to have? Of course not, but it is valid. The act of then evading that instead of trying to come to a peaceful resolution will severely lower the chances of that user ever becoming a successful contributor of that community. John (talk) 00:27, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
A policy that says “administrators can decide who is a member of this community” sounds like something that should belong on a private wiki, where admins can manually whitelist users access via the member group (unless changed). Having a public wiki and then blocking people for no reason isn’t good. Amanda Catherine (talk) 00:30, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
It isn't but it doesn't make the community any less legitimate. Resolve disputes, don't cause them is the simple rule here. Causing disruption makes it less of a civil matter and more of a global issue and in that case, the user will lose as they are intentionally disrupting Miraheze. John (talk) 00:32, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

Weather and Climate Box show/hide function not working?

I hope this is the appropriate place to ask this question. I have the templates for weather and climate graphs loaded up. Everything works but the hide/show function. They do not load into the header or footers as they should. The examples in the templates also do not load. I have the common.css and common.js squared away as far as I know. I suspect that I'm missing something in there as the show/hide function of the Table of Content box works correctly. Styling of the graphs is fine. The only part that doesn't work is the show/hide. Any thoughts? If this isn't the correct place for this question, I apologize and would appreciate being directed to the correct spot. Jar818 (talk) 19:28, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Try clearing your browser's cache. That usually does the trick. -- Void Whispers 21:01, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
Thank for the response. Just to be sure, I did again a few times and nothing. I then decided to start fresh with the template and .js and .css code. At that point it started working, so I probably had missed something. However I then tried use the |collapsed line as outlined in the documentation and that broke it. The show/hide feature stopped appearing. So I went in and removed the |collapsed line and upon refreshing the page, the show/hide came back, but to the left of the title, not aligned right. More tinkering I guess.Jar818 (talk) 01:10, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
I redid the common files again and now things are constant but not how they should be. Now it correctly places the toggle, but rather than show/hide it says Collapse/Expand. The functions work, but I still have no ability to set it to collapsed when the page loads.Jar818 (talk) 01:57, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

Infobox

Hello. I was trying to import infoboxes from wikipedia to my wiki. But it was not succesful, I dont even know if I did it right. Please can someone do the guide for me on a specific example? I was trying to import infoboxes from this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump and I wanted to have the same look just like in this page. I did all what was in this page https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Importing_Wikipedia_infoboxes_tutorial But please can somebody help me and write a guide to how to import these specific infoboxes (Donald Trump) to my wiki. Maybe I did something wrong and later I´ll can understand it. Mostly I dont understand where I can found modules which are required for a specific infobox (template?), just like in Donald Trump page. I dont know but I imported only these with /doc: Template:Infobox Template:Infobox officeholder Template:Infobox officeholder/office Template:Infobox president Thank you Dami (talk) 21:31, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

@Dami: Hi. What exactly is not working? Can you link me to a page which is not working? Reception123 (talk) (C) 14:31, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
@Reception123: Hello. Thank you for reply. Right now nothing. I deleted it all. I just need a guide to these specific infoboxes. Dami (talk) 21:31, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
@Dami: Have you read User:Void/Infoboxes? Also, please make sure to sign with ~~~~. Reception123 (talk) (C) 15:24, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
@Reception123: I tried everything. But maybe if you write to me a guide to this specific example, I will be grateful. Dami (talk) 18:27, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
@Reception123: I tried it again and now I am getting this error: Lua error: Internal error: The interpreter has terminated with signal "24". Dami (talk) 10:14, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
@Reception123: I even deleted my wiki because I do not know how to continue. I believe someone will help me to create a new and functional wiki. I also looked at some advice on the Internet: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Thread:Extension_talk:Scribunto/Lua_error:_Internal_error:_The_interpreter_has_terminated_with_signal_"24". Dami (talk) 19:55, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
@Reception123: I think this could help, but who can set it up? You set $wgScribuntoEngineConf['luastandalone']['cpuLimit'] too low. Either raise it or unset it. Dami (talk) 12:27, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
@Dami: I'm taking a look at https://virtualcommunity.miraheze.org/wiki/%C5%A0abl%C3%B3na:Infobox and https://thisreality.miraheze.org/wiki/Template:Infobox, and both appear to be working. Is this somehow different from before, or is there another issue that I have not found? -- Void Whispers 15:17, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

LocalSettings.php on http://sv.miraheze.org

Hi! I have question: where can the LocalSettings.php be found on http://sv.miraheze.org (I requested that wiki and is host there)? I would just add some extensions and change some user group rights, and some other things there, where can the LocalSettings.php be found there? Psl631 (Let's Chat!) 17:23, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi, you can view LC.php on https://github.com/miraheze/mw-config . For extensions you enable through Special:ManageWikiExtensions, some settings can be done through Special:ManageWiki and everything else through the repo i linked too. Paladox (talk) 19:48, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
Can changes be made to the LocalSettings.php on GitHub or is it on Phacibrator? Psl631 (Let's Chat!) 03:37, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
@Psl631: If you want to make a pull request to GitHub, you can do so. Please note that some settings are also on Special:ManageWiki. Reception123 (talk) (C) 05:41, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
Te setting I want is not on the managewiki, how can I change user rights for user groups? Psl631 (Let's Chat!) 16:52, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
@Psl631: You either request it on Phabricator or you make a pull request on GitHub and edit it yourself. Whatever works for you. Reception123 (talk) (C) 16:57, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── New extensions want I to add, but they are not available on Special:ManageWikiExtensions, these extensions want I to add:

I want also to change some user group rights, and also add a new user group to place banned users in, and Echo want I to re-style to add a notification as "warning" while userpage gets edited by another user/IP, and will not get triggered if edit is marked as minor, is this ok? --Psl631 (Let's Chat!) 07:04, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

Edit notices

Hey, I was looking at having some edit notices on my wiki, as I find they might turn out quite useful. I was wondering if it's something that I need to go through Phabricator for? or if it's a function that's already available? if it's already available how do I go about adding them? PlatinumYellow (talk) 16:13, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

@PlatinumYellow: Hello, I'm not quite sure about what you mean by "edit notice". Could you please be a bit more specific? Maybe provide an example or screenshot from another wiki? Reception123 (talk) (C) 17:27, 17 August 2018 (UTC)
[6], it's a text box that is shown above the edit box when editing or creating a new page. PlatinumYellow (talk) 17:37, 17 August 2018 (UTC)
@PlatinumYellow: Oh you mean that, well, if you read the page you linked, it explains how Editnotices are created :) If you need extra help, please tell me. Reception123 (talk) (C) 17:56, 17 August 2018 (UTC)
So I guess I'm getting confused with where I need to input the information. One of the categories I'm looking to make a notice for is "Category:19 year old juniors" I thought "Category:19 year old juniors/Editnotice" was correct but when I tested it when creating the red link the notice didn't appear. But I guess I'm misinterpreting where I would need to create the notice. Any help would be very much appreciated. PlatinumYellow (talk) 18:09, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Trouble Creating Wiki

Hello, I tried to create a wiki titled "Rotten Websites Wiki" on this platform, but every time I attempted to make a request I always get the same message saying: "The database name may not contain non-alphanumeric characters." what should I do to resolve the issue? Importing very large wikis

I'm downloading a dump of my old wiki and it's getting pretty big, maybe 20 Gb before compression. That's way too much to send it via email as the instructions suggest, and I don't know any free service allowing such a large upload limit. Is it possible to upload it via FTP, or what? --Wedhro (talk) 07:08, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Have you tried splitting the download into multiple sections, then upload it to https://archive.org and then request a import from https://phabricator.miraheze.org? CnocBride | Talk | Contribs 13:59, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Wish to inline images from my blog into my wiki

I'd like to inline images from my science 2.0 blog into my astrobiology wiki.

E.g. from

https://www.science20.com/robert_walker/will_first_mars_astronauts_stay_in_orbit_teleoperating_sterile_rovers_to_protect_earth_and_mars_from_colliding

To

https://astrobiology.miraheze.org/wiki/Blogs/Robert_Walker/Will_First_Mars_Astronauts_Stay_In_Orbit_-_Tele-operating_Sterile_Rovers_-_To_Protect_Earth_And_Mars_From_Colliding_Biospheres

As with $wgAllowExternalImagesFrom

Is this something I can do?

Thanks?

Request for Wiki Creator/Disclosure of active sanctions

Dear Community & Sysadmins,

In the interests of transparency I am disclosing that I'm under active sanctions by the Miraheze Staff team. The sanctions are detailed on a link accessible from my user page.

With this disclosure in mind I'd still like to regain the Wiki Creator flag. If necessary I can accept the condition that no sites I would otherwise create a request for under any account that may be used by me are created by myself.

I have not been accused of abuse (per my definition, definitions between people vary) of this specific flag. I believe I have shown sufficient technical ability to create sites and have also shown the ability to accept constructive advice on my user talk page regarding the use of this specific flag. I believe that this flag will be used well by myself should I be regranted it again.

I understand that this flag is granted by stewards on the advice of sysadmins. I therefore request that a sysadmin hold a sysadmin only private discussion regarding whether I should be granted this flag or not since other sysadmins may have comments to make that may influence the team's determination. Should the sysadmin team decide so please also make the condition above that I have specified a condition of usage of these rights if I am given them.

Regards,

Sau226 (talk) 08:38, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

I followed those links. Am not on IRC but I am guessing your "disruption" was being uncivil on IRC. This does not depend on knowing "Miraheze IRC norms," as civility is the norm most other places too.
I have been uncivil from time to time. I suggest you endure whatever the sanction was, continue to do good works, not pat yourself on the back for "disclosing" what was known to the relevant people anyway (I am not relevant), and not escalate the drama to the "community." Spıke (talk)14:18 20-Aug-2018
This is the thing. People on both Wikimedia and Miraheze have some strange reason or find one to accuse of of wanting to "play" or as shown above. I can and will endure the sanction since it does not prohibit disclosure or prevent me from filing applications. I'm not escalating drama but people have a right to know these things since it can also impact the community. Sau226 (talk) 08:56, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

What would cause blank pages?

Does anyone know what would cause blank pages to display after using the browsers "page back or forward" buttons? In the middle of adding info, my wiki started to display blank pages when I would go back to the previous page. If I refresh the page, it loads correctly but not going forward or backwards. I tried to disable all my extensions and that didn't change anything. Cleared my cache, cookies and other site data and that didn't seem to fix it. If I logout, it tries to send me to redirected page that I have setup which shows that something on the PHP side is trying to do it's thing. But it still gives me a blank page and continues till I log out of the Miraheze.org site as well. Then when I refresh it'll say I don't have permission and I have to log back in. I'm stumped. Thanks for any thoughts. Jar818 (talk) 03:49, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

@Jar818: Hi, could you please link some of these pages so we can investigate and reproduce as well? Reception123 (talk) (C) 05:29, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
@Reception123: Well the good news is that what ever was going on has resolved itself after a night of sleep. Everything is now working on multiple browsers on multiple platforms as expected. My apologizes, I probably should have walked away for the evening and checked the next morning before pestering the community. Jar818 (talk) 12:06, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
@Jar818: Happy to hear! And it's no problem, if there's any error, even just for a while, it's always best to report it. Reception123 (talk) (C) 16:04, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
@Reception123: My sites acting up again and serving blank pages. I just sat down for the evening and can't access any of it at the moment. https://jrichard.miraheze.org/. Tried a few browser, same results. Chrome says "This page isn't working" HTTP ERROR 500. Thoughts?Jar818 (talk) 01:14, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
@Jar818: That is still very strange, since I don't get any errors at all. Could you please link to a specific page where you are getting an error? And have you cleared your cache? Reception123 (talk) (C) 08:08, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
@Reception123: It appears to have something to do with my login session on miraheze.org. If my session times out and I get logged out, my site appears to get confused and can't decide what to do and sends a blank white page. If I log back into miraheze.org then my wiki sorts itself out and the pages begin to load again. If I log in to miraheze.org on Firefox, Chrome will continue to present blank pages till I log into miraheze.org there as well. Even if I clear all my cache and data. OpenGraphMeta Extension creates more issues than it fixes

I enabled the OpenGraphMeta extension in the hope of having more influence on what was sent to Facebook. I tend to share articles with a facebook group. My initial issue seemed to be that the HTML Meta and Title extension does not seem to allow "meta property" content to be added to the HTML. Well oddly it has done once (I have no idea how as I couldn't repeat it), but even in that instance it chose the image to include from in the body of the page, rather than the one I provided it in the seo content parameter.

I decided that OpenGraphMeta would be the solution. But that is worse. It automatically populates the og:title with the page name. Not good as some of my pages are sequential numbers (there is a good reason for this). Without the OpenGraphMeta I can send <SEO title="The enemy between us: how inequality erodes our mental health" /> to Facebook and if I don't have a metdesc it picks up the description from section 1 of the article (which is ideal). With OpenGraphMeta I can't influence the og:title, and so get the page title as "OD1".

In short:

  • With OpenGraphMeta I get the image I want, but it messes up my page title I wish to provide to Facebook
  • With HTML Meta and Title I get the title I want, but can't send an image to Facebook

  1. Is it possible to look at OpenGraphMeta and see if there is a way I can influence the og:title selection?
  2. Should HTML Meta and Title be accepting "meta property"?
  3. Or should I be asking you to install the WikiSEO extension?

Or any solution that it is felt will work is fine for me

Many thanks, Michaeldakin (talk) 21:21, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

Best to open a task at our Phabricator for this issue to be tracked more easily. CnocBride | Talk | Contribs 10:39, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes I had decided to do that as I've done further testing and I know why I have been able to force in Meta Property on one page. If image is in the header section it adds it automatically as an open graphic line in html. So yep it needs a task.Michaeldakin (talk) 11:00, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

Request for Wiki creator

Hi. I would like to become a Wiki creator to show what I can do on Miraheze. I have read the instructions on Meta:Wiki creators guide and I fully understand them and I understand how to use this tool. Thanks. Pkbwcgs (talk) 14:15, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

I don't really oppose this request, but I would like point out that I see few contributions to Meta, so maybe work on that first? Reception123 (talk) (C) 17:56, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
@Reception123: I know a user who on their very first edit on Meta, got the Wiki creator right. See their contributions and you will see that their first edit on meta itself was requesting the Wiki creator right. Surely, it can't be too bad if I request it after 44 edits. Pkbwcgs (talk) 18:14, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
That is a good point, however, we did know Zppix before from the Wikimedia projects, so we knew he was trustworthy. Though, I guess if the other sysadmins don't disagree, I'm fine with you being wikicreator as well. Reception123 (talk) (C) 05:54, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
I am also from the Wikimedia projects as well. Pkbwcgs (talk) 07:02, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

How to whitelist email domains for private wiki

Hi there,

I am trying to whitelist several domains for my private wiki gsb.miraheze.org. Currently you can signup, but not access content until an admin puts you into the "Members" group. I'd like to make this automatic if you sign up from a certain email domain. Switch Template not working to change image and Image not updated for upload

Bringing this from a phab task [1] that was declined as it's non technical task.

|**Wiki URL**|https://bsaikatsu.miraheze.org%7C |**Type**|Major|

On the Wikia, it does have changing switch template. like switching image, it does not working to change image from wikia. If you see [[ https://bsaikatsu.miraheze.org/wiki/Ako_Saotome | Ako Saotome ]] article page, see the template why does not work switch template.

In [[ https://bsaikatsu.miraheze.org/wiki/Episode_18_-_Even_a_Slight_Chance | Episode 18 (Aikatsu Friends) ]] Article, the image not updated for no reason. if you open tab or click the image, it was updated. On the wikia, always updated image. but there is no reason why doesn't updating the image.

Paladox (talk) 17:42, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

I used to use this template when on I was on Wikia as well and it relies on some javascript. I can't view any pages to see if you have it, but if you don't you'll have to copy over the relevant code from the MediaWiki:Common.js on the Wikia.
Though if that fails the tabber/tabs buttons extension can be customized in CSS to look just like the switch template and do the same thing. MZD (talk) 23:16, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

About Copyrighted Images (and that they use wgAllowExternalImages)

Hello, everybody. I am administrator of several wikis that are in pre-development phase. One of the issues that I have to resolve is the issue of using external images with copyright through wgAllowExternalImages that already have some wikis enabled.

Before asking my question, I make a clarification. My question does not refer to Wikis whose content was brought from another website because of bifurcations or for some other reason. My question is for Wikis that started from scratch and whose authors wanted to create their own projects that resembled others but were unrelated.

My question is, What is the position of System Administrators, Meta Administrators, Stewards and the entire community regarding using copyrighted images uploaded locally or through wgAllowExternalImages?

Will I be able to use Copyright or Fair Use images without problems? Wiki1776 (talk) 16:04, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

  1. Fair Use means you can use the images.
  2. Anything on Wikipedia and Commons can be used; they are strict about not allowing photos onto pages where it is not clear that Wikipedia has the right to use them (and their readers have the right to reuse them, with proper credit).
  3. Copyrights should not be violated, and it doesn't matter where you got the photos.
  4. Whether you can use these images "without problems" depends on whether your wiki has any readers and whether the owner of a stolen image wants to bother redressing the theft. I am sure that Miraheze does not want to spend time sharing your problems, whether receiving a lawsuit or even receiving an expedited demand under the DMCA law, and if they believe the first problem suggests they will share many more, they might shut your wiki down.
  5. I welcome corrections. Spıke (talk)02:26 9-Sep-2018
@Spike the Dog I know the first three points well, so I will omit them. While in the fourth point in theory, only I would be the reader but in practice anyone could see what I publish in a wiki being public.
I'd like to use images of several people but I couldn't find any in the Public Domain. I have tried to communicate with possible authors but I have never received an answer. The vast majority have copyright and so my question. Can I use wgAllowExternalImages so that in my Wikis appears in the person's article, an image with copyright or unknown license? Wiki1776 (talk) 15:38, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
