What happened?

I just woke up due to my inactivity on Miraheze. I noticed that my wiki got shut down due to inactive, can it be restored?? The Taki GL3480 (talk) 15:36, 22 May 2022 (UTC)

@The Taki GL3480: It appears as if your wiki has been marked as deleted, but it hasn't yet been deleted from the database, meaning a Steward can undelete it for you. — Chrs (talk) 17:41, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
The Taki GL3480, your wiki has been  undeleted now. Please ensure you have reviewed, or re-reviewed, Content Policy, together with our other global policies with respect to your wiki and your users'/administrators' conduct. Dmehus (talk) 17:48, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! I would promise that I would be little active on my wiki and Miraheze. The Taki GL3480 (talk) 18:01, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
No problem! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask in a new thread here, on your user talk page by adding {{help me}} in a new thread, or in #miraheze connect on IRC (relayed to Discord as #miraheze-relay). Dmehus (talk) 18:07, 22 May 2022 (UTC)

Problem Template "Scroll box"

Hi, I have a problem with my "Scroll box" template, here : https://fiction.miraheze.org/wiki/Mod%C3%A8le:Scroll_box
In fact, as you can see on this example here : https://fiction.miraheze.org/wiki/Lord_Voldemort#Citations, the template doesn't encompass anything but the first part and is completely useless.
Maybe it's because of the fact that there are templates within a template.
Thanks in advance for your help. Darkrai18 (talk) 10:31, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

@Darkrai18: The bug was in Modèle:Citation which I have corrected. You will have to refresh/purge the pages to update. - PercyUK (talk) 17:54, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks you very much, @PercyUK:. Darkrai18 (talk) 18:25, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

CSS page has wrong content model

On my wiki that archives deleted Wikipedia pages, subpages in the Template namespace that should have a Sanitized CSS content model instead appear as normal wikitext, as is evident in pages such as this one. I have CSS and TemplateStyles installed. Is there any way to fix this error? Tali64³ (talk) 21:43, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi, if you want to change the content model of a page (from wikitext to CSS), you can use Special:ChangeContentModel on your wiki. Let us know if you encounter any other difficulties. Matttest (talk) 23:35, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. I didn't know that page existed. Tali64³ (talk) 00:36, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
@Tali64³: Just an xtra note; it has to be Santised CSS, not just CSS, expecially for template styles, hope this helps :) --  Joseph  TB  CT  CA  07:24, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

The original thread which is not a request for steward action is moved from Stewards' noticeboard to here.

When you try to submit, you will get a message that says, "Part of the edit form did not reach the server. Please check and submit again as is.Please check and try again. " No matter how many times I try to submit, it does not update. This situation has continued for five days. Please help.

Funa-enpitu, this is quite vague, but nonetheless seems to be a technical issue. Please raise a Phabricator ticket here. It would be best to include a screenshot in this case, obfuscating any personally identifying information, of course. Dmehus (talk) 05:29, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
Since this is not an action that requires a steward intervention, it is moved back here. --Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 10:07, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Is there a way to increase the maximum amount of loops

Is there a way to increase the maximum amount of loops? because it seems to go up to 99, but I want it to go up to at least 276. Sirlance3000 (talk) 18:50, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

You can request that on the Stewards' noticeboard but I believe system administrators don't recommend anything above 200 or you'll cause server strain. Agent Isai Talk to me! 23:43, 10 June 2022 (UTC)

I am still having problems with importing a dump to a wiki

Right now, when I attempt to import a dump from Bad TV Channels Wiki into Worst TV Networks Wiki, it comes up with the message "Import failed: Expected <mediawiki> tag, got". FatBurn0000 (sandbox | CentralAuth) 21:43, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Hm, might be because the import is too big. I suggest making a Phabricator task for the import. -- Bukkit[cetacean needed] 21:45, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
@Bukkit: I do not want to use Phabricator; it requires me to give personal information, which I am not willing to do. FatBurn0000 (sandbox | CentralAuth) 07:37, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
It only requires the e-mail (which you most likely linked on your MH account), and a Miraheze account. The real name field is optional. -- Bukkit[cetacean needed] 18:04, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
@FatBurn0000: There appears to be a misunderstanding. Phabricator only requires a valid miraheze account and email confirmation. When you have those you need only use the 'login with mediawiki' button and nothing more is required, especially sensitive information. --Raidarr (talk) 12:10, 12 June 2022 (UTC)

How do I change back to the legacy vector theme?

I'm trying to revert my wiki back to the legacy vector theme, however I can't find the option in the styling menu. Every instruction page I see says to select legacy vector, but it isn't there. Can someone please help me? Liesa Hicks (talk) 00:40, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

Just select the option that says "Vector". In ManageWiki, there are 2 options, Vector and Vector-2022. Legacy Vector is the "Vector" option. Agent Isai Talk to me! 00:41, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
I've done that and so far nothing has changed. Does it take a few minutes or is something not right? Liesa Hicks (talk) 00:55, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
Never mind, I think it was due to the fact that my preferences were selected to vector-2022. Liesa Hicks (talk) 00:57, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
Just go to Special:ManageWiki/settings#mw-section-styling on your wiki and select "vector" as the default skin. See also phabricator:T9389 Naleksuh (talk) 00:45, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

Again, problem with infoboxes

It's not the first time I post about this, be it on the Steward's or here in the community noticeboard. To cite the other times I posted about it: "After importing some .xml files from other wikis, I somehow managed to break all my infoboxes, as shown on this link: [1]".

Being honest, it was a long time ago that I imported these .xml files, and I don't really remember any specific details. In any case, it was said to me that I would have to make the wiki public for troubleshooting. That wouldn't be an issue. I hope that, this time, I can get some closure on this issue.

Any help is appreciated. -- IvanCastroTheFool (talk) 12:39, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

And still waiting. Nobody has any ideas about this? -- IvanCastroTheFool (talk) 23:08, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
First question: Did you overwrite something important when you imported the xml files? If you did, then you'll need to choose which you want more - whatever is in those the xml files or the infoboxes. If you want the infoboxes more and you did overwrite something, you'll need to re-import the infobox template; see Importing Wikipedia infoboxes tutorial for the easiest way to make an xml file for infoboxes. --Robkelk (talk) 14:38, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
About the first question: It seems to be the case, right? And about the suggestion: Thanks, although I am somehow familliar with MediaWiki importing, I shall do it. -- IvanCastroTheFool (talk) 16:40, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

Mobile view not right

I recently opened a wiki with articles imported from Wikipedia as XML (Mandaepedia). I imported all the modules and templates, but still the mobile view is off. I added the file to get the info boxes to appear correctly and that is basically the only thing working right. Also, the sidebar with collapsible lists shows the entities vertically, one below the other, making it too long if it is expanded affecting the rest of the article. Is there a file I need to add or adjustment I need to make to get the mobile view to show correctly as well as the sidebar with collapsible lists?

Thank you, Mandaepedia001 (talk) 19:06, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

What exactly is "off" in mobile view? Agent Isai Talk to me! 02:51, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
Try to enable MobileFrontend. Cigaryno (talk) 12:28, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
I checked under the extensions, other tab, and the MobileFrontend is enabled. I am using the vector skin. Mandaepedia001 (talk) 15:22, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
'Read', 'View Source', 'View history' tabs appear at the top of the mobile view followed by the entire sidebar (Main page, tools etc.) After scrolling down through that, you get to the article with the infobox and images not centered on the page. Here is an example of an article where you can see the mobile view and sidebar with collapsible list [2]
Mandaepedia001 (talk) 15:43, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
I see the issue. Vector 2022 isn't designed to be responsive for mobile devices just yet. Because it's mostly a mobile-first extension, it does that because it doesn't really focus on phones. I suggest you set the mobile default skin to something else as Vector 2022 isn't really meant for phones just yet. Agent Isai Talk to me! 03:59, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
I did as you suggested and changed the mobile skin to minerva which seems to have solved the problem. In desktop minerva skin, the sidebar with collapsible lists shows the links correctly, but is missing the small bullets that are supposed to separate them as shown here. Is there a way to correct that? Mandaepedia001 (talk) 18:34, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

Upgrade to MediaWiki 1.39 developer release/alpha

Hello, I think Miraheze should run the latest alpha/DR build of MediaWiki 1.39 4 days after the release of a build. Cigaryno (talk) 12:27, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

No way Miraheze is going to go to cutting edge without significant extension testing and a stable release to work from. --Raidarr (talk) 23:38, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
We won't upgrade the entire farm to MediaWiki 1.39 (we would quite literally break every single extension as MediaWiki 1.39 introduces many, many breaking changes that breaks about 95% of extensions) but we will definitely upgrade our beta cluster to begin testing for that version once the time draws near for it's release. Agent Isai Talk to me! 03:57, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
By "break[ing] about 95% of extensions", what do you mean? --Routhwick (talk) 23:26, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
As the co-moderator of the largest wiki on Miraheze, I think that staying on the "bleeding edge" by installing alpha releases of software is a Very Bad Idea. All The Tropes needs a stable platform; we do not need the latest bells and whistles. --Robkelk (talk) 12:32, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

The frblayout and frbmessages are used by Miraheze to solicit donations, but they are not dismissible on the other wikis like they are here on Meta. DrJaySensei (talk) 00:13, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

This should be fixed, apologies. Agent Isai Talk to me! 03:58, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

Discussion: Central notice changes

This is for the sake of having an open discussion on the changes proposed in this RfC, though I won't really touch much on the last proposal that was added by another person (of course, you're welcome to talk about that as well nonetheless). Hopefully this comment will at least make it clear what the proposals I brought up are intended to mean. Also, please ask nicely if you would like clarity on anything at all.

The first one to discuss is the following:

Central notices with the purpose of soliciting participation from wiki communities for an event or a discussion should last while that event or discussion is open for people to participate. As in, the central notice would only be removed after the event or discussion has closed.

Let's start by saying that this is not changing what a central notice is made for. It's not saying that every discussion gets a central notice, what it's saying applies in the instance when the people who make central notices decide that a discussion will get a central notice, which is still at their judgement. This talk page comment might show some insight on what such judgement it is, which again they would still retain. What changes is specifically the duration of such particular central notices, in that it would be in relation to the discussion that it would be notifying of.

The discussions being referred to can be gleaned from Special:CentralNotice (click "Show archived campaigns" to see the older ones). It is what is meant to gather people to provide their input and feedback, and this description fits, for example, Requests for Comment or Requests for Stewardship. And if they have yet to be closed by the closer, then the closer presumably decided that it needs more time to gather more comments before a conclusion can be drawn. If so, the methods used to notify of the discussion's existence should get continued use to gather more discussion from people.

Another proposal to discuss is the following:

A campaign type can be set for central notice campaigns, allowing users to opt out of specific campaign types in their preferences, specifically in the "Banners" section. Here is a proposal for what campaign types Miraheze should use:

  • Fundraising
  • Surveys
  • Maintenance
  • Requests for Comment
  • Requests for Stewardship
  • Requests for Community Director

To make it clear how to use preferences to opt-out of campaign types, some text instructing people how to do so should be added to central notices.

In technical terms, campaign types are configured with $wgCentralNoticeCampaignTypes in LocalSettings.php.

This can presumably work with ManageWiki to apply for a whole wiki. To sysadmins, this would presumably be done by using a custom variable to set $wgDefaultUserOptions['centralnotice-display-campaign-type-whatever'] = 0.

Now, in regards to how to decide on the campaign types to be used, I'd say that having the communities' consensus is still relevant, in the case of disputes over what should be grouped together or partitioned. And the RfC does show a dispute over whether Requests for Global Sysop should be included, excluded, or grouped with another type. So it would at least be useful to have some sort of discussion with wiki communities to figure out what's best.

In response to other comments in the RfC: Including Requests for Global Sysop in the list of campaign types does not mean that every single one of that request gets a central notice, it is meant to mean that a RfGS would be allowed to get a central notice, which would still have the judgement of the people who make central notices to actually get one. And people should be able to decide for themselves if they want to opt out of seeing certain central notices, and I figure that if someone desires a tool to stop seeing a certain kind of notification, they likely aren't interested in what's being notified about in the first place. Finally, it was concluded in this RfC that there is consensus for community-oriented posts to be posted on Miraheze's social media accounts, therefore a community-elected role would be appropriate.

Feel free to say your thoughts on any of these topics. K599 (talk) 15:29, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

@K599: And will there be a way to disable CNotice for some, and leave only fundraising? YellowFrogger (Talk Edits) 15:33, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
@YellowFrogger As said in the explanation of how campaign types work, people should be able to go into their preferences and opt-out of the types that they don't want to see. K599 (talk) 16:27, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
@K599: But there has to be an option to hide it across the whole wiki (not just in preferences), but yes, all visitors to a particular wiki would be better. Nobody is obligated to see CNotice either, so it had to have that. Showing only CNotice for fundraising, which is important for Miraheze to maintain the wikis maintenance, the others don't matter (or only matter in Meta). YellowFrogger (Talk Edits) 19:59, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
@YellowFrogger I mentioned above that there's presumably a way to make campaign types work with ManageWiki, though I suppose a sysadmin should comment on the method I talked about. K599 (talk) 20:19, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
Note that the list of campaign types proposed in my initial comment is based on past central notices as seen on Special:CentralNotice. Of course, feel free to discuss any desired changes to the list. K599 (talk) 03:04, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
For some added context, the banner preferences can be seen in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-centralnotice-banners, where it's currently the extension's defaults. These options have been unused probably due to being unrelated to Miraheze. K599 (talk) 03:46, 22 December 2021 (UTC)
This talk page discussion has a review of the proposed list of campaign types. In response:
@Dmehus: Okay, but I would prefer that "Community Notices" have a page that explains what would fall under this label. Then this page would be linked, if possible, from the related user preference and, if implemented, the related ManageWiki setting proposed in the community wishlist proposal. K599 (talk) 01:29, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
I think it'd be useful to consider above suggestions like the instructions thing as well. K599 (talk) 03:25, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

Finding a conclusion on campaign types

  • There was a talk page discussion that reviewed a list of campaign types, but it seems that no sort of action has been concretely decided on.
  • Reiterating what's been explained before, campaign types refers to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-centralnotice-banners, a user preference that is used to choose what types of central notices to have displayed for your own account.
  • Currently, as can be seen by checking your preferences, the configured campaign types don't particularly reflect how Miraheze uses central notices (see Special:CentralNotice). Hence the suggestion above for a more appropriate list of campaign types. The description for the preference also makes reference to Wikimedia rather than this wikifarm, which probably confuses people.
  • This community wishlist proposal would also need campaign types to be configured to be useful. I'll also note the suggestion of using ManageWiki on a custom variable to set $wgDefaultUserOptions['centralnotice-display-campaign-type-whatever'] = 0.
  • If campaign types do get properly configured and used, it would be helpful to take the suggestion of including some text in central notices that instructs people how to use the user preference and ManageWiki setting, to make it clear that the banner isn't forced to appear.

It would be good to at least have some course of action that outlines whether or not this wikifarm will make use of campaign types, and what those campaign types will be. K599 (talk) 03:51, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

I still want some sort of concrete conclusion on this, as I do think this would be helpful to people. K599 (talk) 23:03, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
I'd still like a resolution on this. It would be a useful feature for allowing individual control over what notices are shown to people. K599 (talk) 22:35, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
Asking for discussion again. This feature, as it's been explained in the above points, would help improve communication, so please have some consideration. K599 (talk) 22:02, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
As stated before, would like a discussion on appropriate options for the "Banners" user preference, as this would be a useful feature, if it were actually implemented. K599 (talk) 22:02, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
As much as this would be interesting to realize, it seems clear there is neither traffic nor interest in the topic at any wider level. --Raidarr (talk) 13:17, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
Well, the list of campaign types that I suggested above was reviewed in this talk page discussion, but further action has not occurred. What would be needed here is to get to the next step to eventually get these ideas implemented, and that's why I've summarized the details about campaign types in the bullet points above, to discuss implementation of them. K599 (talk) 22:22, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
It's a feature that would be useful for people if it were actually implemented, so I would like it to be considered. K599 (talk) 22:24, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
I still would be interested in some discussion for making this happen. K599 (talk) 22:22, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
Still would like discussion on this, to make this happen sometime. K599 (talk) 22:21, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
Noting again the suggestion of having a ManageWiki setting to set $wgDefaultUserOptions['centralnotice-display-campaign-type-whatever'] = 0 for each campaign type. This would be useful by allowing to set a default user preference for individual wikis that makes central notices opt-in for each user, rather than opt-out. K599 (talk) 22:22, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
Still requesting action on this. K599 (talk) 22:22, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

Respond to this

Respond to this with any comments. K599 (talk) 22:17, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

There has been insufficient response to the request of the described setting. This should not be closed without a proper resolution. Also, removing other people's comments is rude. K599 (talk) 23:28, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Additional suggestion: Make a page detailing CentralNotice

I would still like a response to the above section on campaign types, and also have another suggestion to make.

If campaign types come into use, a page that details central notices, mainly the campaign types as stated before, would help people understand what these notices are for. Some other info, like what Wikimedia's pages cover, would likely also be a bit helpful. And to allow people to easily find such a page, it should at least be linked from user preferences and any ManageWiki settings related to central notices. K599 (talk) 01:16, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

Can I link my wiki to other wiki not using Miraheze?

Do you mean by means of Interwiki links? Agent Isai Talk to me! 23:43, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
Agent Isai No, I want to make my wiki becoming a member of Wikimedia-like project called Encyclopædiæ Pokémonis, where Bulbapedia is a part. Lmaocxc (talk) 00:40, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
Hi! If you’re meaning linking to another wiki in terms of full-on partnership…I’m really not sure how that would be done. The Wikimedia Foundation has services similar to Miraheze, except that you cannot request a wiki there. Instead, if I may make a recommendation, you would be better served migrating the non-Miraheze wiki to Miraheze, by means of Special:RequestWiki and Special:RequestImportDump. Do they have at least one article linking to them? Agent Isai Talk to me! 03:57, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
Additionally, please check out this manual. It is reminded that you can always change the definition of a content pages at Special:ManageWiki/namespaces. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 10:11, 24 June 2022 (UTC)
If they don't have a link in them, and you wish for all content pages to appear in counter, you can change the article count method to "any" in Special:ManageWiki/settings#mw-section-links, by changing the $wgArticleCountMethod to "Any" instead of "Link", in order to make it count all content pages, even if they do not contain at least one internal link. excuse me. I made a mistake in the URL, but can I change it after creating the site? Magna scientia era (talk) 12:34, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

@Magna scientia era: I assume you would like to change the miraheze subdomain (e.g. from a.miraheze.org to b.miraheze.org), right? If that's the case, you should make a request at Phabricator. If you want a custom domain other than the .miraheze.org urls, please follow this guideline. Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 23:40, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

I have a bug where I can't log in to the site, using the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. When I try to log in, it returns a "No active login attempt is in progress for your session." error, and I can only log in after a few attempts. I disabled all userscripts, anti-tracker, and even ad blocker features, but the issue persists. DesperatelyMango (talk) 21:38, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Problems with sidebar menu skin vector

After the upgrade some of the sidebar menus have vanished, only the headers remained. This drove me crazy because I had no more simple access to important links such like toolbox and administration. If you have the same problem try remove the extension collapsible vector Special:ManageWiki/extensions#mw-section-other, this solved my problem. Lily talk and I will listen · Lilypond Wiki 04:43, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

The problem was indeed caused by the CollapsibleVector extension, I deployed a fix for the extension a couple of days ago, and it should now work properly as intended. Universal Omega (talk) 20:50, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

Как настроить вики в Мобильной версии?

Просто Человек (talk) 13:43, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi there @Просто Человек:! Please go to Special:RequestWiki and form a request for the wiki you’d like to create. Please ensure the description of the wiki is lengthened enough so its scope is clear. A wiki creator will then approve your request and your wiki (along with its unique Miraheze subdomain!) will be created. Thanks - BrandonWM (talkcontribsglobalrights) 14:26, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
KatozzKita (talk) 14:39, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
Возможно ли отключить MobileFrontend в мобильной версии?
@Просто Человек: - Попробуй зайти на такую ссылку на своей вики:
.../wiki/Special:ManageWiki/extensions#mw-section-other
KatozzKita (talk) 08:13, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

Articles no showing

How to enable the display in the article counter of all articles in the main namespace? Викикот (talk) 07:21, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

There is magic word {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} which you can insert anywhere, for example on main page. Or you can try skins which imitates FANDOM's design - Cosmos (previous, Oasis) and Evelution (current) - they have article counter in the top right corner.
KatozzKita (talk) 08:23, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
No, you misunderstood. They are displayed, but their actual number is not shown. At the same time, if add link toapage, then it startto becounted in the article counter. Викикот (talk) 09:07, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
Possibly cash thing, on wiki or browser, try empty edit or purge pages where number is wrong? (or I misunderstood you again, мб по-русски?)
KatozzKita (talk) 09:41, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
Please check out this manual. A page is only counted as a content page when:
  1. it's in the main namespace;
  2. it contains at least one internal wiki link;
  3. it isn't a redirect.
To change the above definition of content pages, you can modify it at Special:ManageWiki/namespaces. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 10:04, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

How to change styles depending on skin preference?

I have been working on the main page of my wiki. It looks decent in the default medik, but in Minevra and Citizen, not so much. How can I make it so different skins have different CSS styles on my main page? Thanks! LetraSeca (talk) 13:36, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

You can refer to mw:Manual:Interface/Stylesheets. You can use MediaWiki:skinname.css to make the css style apply to that specific skin. Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 13:48, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Wiki decline request

Hello, I need a wiki creator to decline the wiki request #25408 because ot is nothing useful. Cigaryno (talk) 15:49, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

A wiki creator will evaluate the request in due course and accept or decline the request as they see fit. I have not had a chance to look at the request yet but if it is truly nothing useful, it should be a quick decline whenever someone gets around to it. Thanks - BrandonWM (talkcontribsglobalrights) 18:38, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
As a note, this type of request should not be placed in any noticeboards, since wiki creators always patrol it. Furthermore, if users subject to a challenge, they should reopen the request and give comments there, before bringing the issue here. Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 03:02, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
I would say if wiki requests are being handled inadequately (unreasonable instructions, a wrong approval, etc) to bring the issue to the Stewards' noticeboard for review, only here if the issue is a general activity issue which requires community discussion. Raidarr (talk) 13:25, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

Is it possible to merge accounts?

Close to a year ago, I made the account I'm using right now and had my old account locked. Looking back at this, however, was a bit of a mistake on my part since I essentially have to go back and forth between the two accounts when looking at edits I've made in the past, making for a tedious experience. Knowing that this extension exists, would it be possible for me to merge my current account to my old account? --Blazikeye535 (talk) 03:53, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

Unfortunately, while it was possible with MediaWiki version 1.36 and possibly 1.37, too, the UserMerge extension is not compatible with MediaWiki 1.38, so this is, unfortunately,  not possible to merge your accounts. If you still have access to your old account, though, you could request an unlock of your old account? Dmehus (talk) 04:09, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
Alright, never mind then. I can wait until it's compatible with version 1.38. --Blazikeye535 (talk) 02:14, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

Question about indexing wikis in search engines

Hello. I have a wiki that was abandoned for several months, but recently I started working on it, though it's still in early development. One thing that bothers me is that it doesn't show up in search engines. I know, it would be silly to think that such a small wiki will get a top results, but even with quoting of the wiki name ("Реальная Жизнь: The Game) and adding additional words like "Miraheze" I cannot find it, with the closest result being some site that lists all Miraheze wikis, including mine. Is there a way it could be improved, or do I just need to continue developing wiki until it get big enough? I know about WikiSEO, Auto-sitemap and HTML tags extensions that supposed to improve it, but, I'd be honest, I don't really understand what they all do. Mr. Fataled (talk) 14:35, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

Search engines have to learn that a website exists before they index it. Your wiki probably isn't on any search engine because no one has alerted it that it exists. Sitemaps are crucial to wikis as they help search engines know that: 1) a website exists at X domain and 2) where every page is. The most helpful thing you can do is signing up for the Google Search Console/Bing Webmaster Tools/<insert your preferred search engines search console) and submitting a sitemap. WikiSEO is an extension which helps you improve your SEO (how 'nice' your wiki looks before search engines) so reading it's documentation may prove helpful. Agent Isai Talk to me! 00:46, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
Hello again! Thanks for your reply. Regarding the sitemap, shouldn't I first verify my site before submittng it? Because as far as I can understand, verifying a site without DNS provider, which for obvious reasons I don't have, isn't possible. Mr. Fataled (talk) 01:46, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

EDIT: Finally figured out how to verify my wiki. Already submitted a sitemap. Thanks for help! I hope it will improve my SEO.

Problems I don't understand - request for help.

Hello! I am having 2 problems with my wiki that I do not understand. They both have to do with this page.

First, as you can see, this page is automatically flagged as a page that uses duplicate arguments in template calls. I understand what this means and have fixed this problem in the past, but cannot figure out why this is happening in this specific case. I have meticulously analyzed the content on all templates called on this page, and am not finding any duplicates. I even created another page that has all the same template calls, but is not being flagged as having duplicate arguments. I believe that this means that the flagging is happening because of something I must be doing with pageforms, as that is the only major difference between these two pages. But honestly, I don't really know.

Second, and even more confusing to me, the only thing that is updated on my Testing page when I edit with form is the Description at the top. I can fill out any combination of things on the form, and none of them are displayed on the page. The infobox doesn't update, and the content being pulled from the templates are not showing when selected in the form. I don't have any clue why this is happening, as it has worked in the past. My only idea is that it has something to do with how I set up my form.

Feel free to edit my Testing page and/or create a new page using that form.

Thanks so much in advance for any help figuring this out. ParentRatings (talk) 19:15, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

Babel - change of configuration (proposal)

Hello all!
I propose change of Babel's extension configuration from default to:

$wgBabelCategoryNames = [
	'0' => 'User %code%-0',
	'1' => 'User %code%-1',
	'2' => 'User %code%-2',
	'3' => 'User %code%-3',
	'4' => 'User %code%-4',
	'5' => 'User %code%-5',
	'N' => 'User %code%-N',
];

and

$wgBabelMainCategory = 'User %code%';

While we are not WMF, i think this categorization is better/clearer than just Category:En.
Please comment if you have other ideas about Babel or want express your support/oppose opinion.
(If this change will be approved, i will do necessary related on-wiki work)

CSS sanitization

I need to sanitize this page [this page]'s CSS content model to sanitized CSS? SecretSpyer (talk) 00:30, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi, you can change content model of a page via Special:ChangeContentModel on your wiki. Let us know if you have any further questions. Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 07:08, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
I have made multiple attempts to change the content model to sanitized CSS instead of CSS but failed. Apparently, it doesn't support sanitized CSS conversion; however, I remembered someone had managed to do so in the past. SecretSpyer (talk) 20:19, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
Hi, after I checked the Special:Version of your wiki, it seems that you haven’t installed the the templatestyles extension. Install a slideshow?

Hello, I would like to know how to install a "slideshow". To clarify, I would like to create a slideshow at the right size and located on the sides of my text.
I tried several techniques; first create my own slideshow, without success because the slideshow was covering the text, which was not acceptable : https://fiction.miraheze.org/w/index.php?title=Blaze_the_Cat&oldid=44924#Pouvoirs_et_capacit%C3%A9s
Then I tried the "slideshow" mode of the gallery, but without success because the images are way too big (and on top of the text, which was rather incidental but what the hell): https://fiction.miraheze.org/wiki/Blaze_the_Cat#Pouvoirs
You know the details, so, thanks in advance for your help. Darkrai18 (talk) 17:19, 17 July 2022 (UTC)

Try to wrap <gallery> with slideshow mode into <div> block like this:
<div style="float:left; padding: 10px 15px 10px 0; width: 300px;"><gallery mode="slideshow">...</gallery></div>
Instead of 300px can be any width you want. KatozzKita (talk) 18:12, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
@KatozzKita: It's good, it works well, but would you know how to put the slideshow a little higher?
Here, it's a bit too low: https://fiction.miraheze.org/wiki/Blaze_the_Cat#Pouvoirs and it's more obvious here: https://fiction.miraheze.org/w/index.php?title=Korra#Pouvoirs_et_capacit%C3%A9s Darkrai18 (talk) 12:16, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
There are huge top and bottom margins in slideshow mode itself. To remove them, you'll have to modify its styling by adding the following code in MediaWiki:Common.css page:
ul.gallery .mw-gallery-slideshow { margin:0 }
Additionally - if you put this div construction to the right side, you need to change padding value a little: 10px 0 10px 15px;; the order of number is: top, right, bottom, left.
And another thing - you can create classes for divs in that Common.css page, so instead of whole style thing, you'll need to do just <div class="name"> KatozzKita (talk) 20:40, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

Question

What happened to callipedia.miraheze.org? Iron Sword 23 (talk) 15:17, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

The wiki is deleted as a Wikipedia clone which have severe violation of the Content Policy and probably the Terms of Use. For clarification, @Agent Isai: as you noted in the wiki deletion log, inquires about this should be directed to stewards via email. However, shouldn’t these inquires regarding copyright violations be directed to Trust and Safety? Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 06:52, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Copyright violations are a violation of the Content Policy's "Miraheze does not host any content that is illegal in the United Kingdom" clause and thus Stewards are within their jurisdiction to delete these wikis. Because this was a Steward action, enquiries should be sent to Stewards. If T&S had done it per the Terms of Use (which only they can enforce, not Stewards) then I would have left a Trust and Safety member take down the wiki and would've directed all enquiries to that department. Looks like the first comment (<!--) in the template is not closed properly, making all the content below not be considered by the template. Make sure to close it properly with a -->.
To avoid such issues in the future I'd suggest to turn on syntax highlighting in the source editor, which can be enabled in ManageWiki. 17:49, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

Revisiting Extension:PdfBook

...now that we're closing in on the MW 1.38 era, and talk of this utility hasn't been touched upon on Miraheze in ages.

This contributor deployed PdfBook in a test run on Saturday, May 21, replacing the promising but much-flawed Display Title in his site's lineup. On-and-off reports of its ineffectiveness elsewhere have diminished its long-term prospects; while preparing this post, rendering with ?action=pdfbook at the end of a wiki URL has led to an error message when trying to view the output. On Android devices with Google Docs (like mine), this reads:

...thanks to which I'm dropping it for good right after this goes to press. (Alerting developers Aran Dunkley and Igor Absorto, and XPosting this message on the extension's talk page, later on; also paging @Universal Omega: for any additional word.)

At Phabricator last December, Universal Omega himself remarked on its fate:

PdfBook is mostly unmaintained, and not on Wikimedia Gerrit,[1] so I don't see any fix happening there. We should consider removal.[2]

A real shame, as something like it would sure come in handy for my future books. Let's hope it actually gets fixed soon enough.... Routhwick (talk) 11:32, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

Is there an alternative to PdfBook that is being maintained? I have it on my private wiki, but I'm not happy with its lack of word-wrap around infoboxes or its lack of support for non-Latin characters. --Robkelk (talk) 14:42, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
@Robkelk: Apart from the built-in "Printable version" utility, maybe DocBookExport (which Referata once experimented with) or mPDF?
To @Universal Omega: Perhaps we might as well initiate extension trials for either/both in a few days? --Routhwick (talk) 00:57, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, @Routhwick:. I have concerns about DocBookExport (which is listed as being a stable release) needing Figures (which is listed as being in beta); who knows when a change to Figures might make DocBookExport unusable? mPDF looks usable from its description. --Robkelk (talk) 12:26, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
I might see if I can try myself to get PdfBook working, and if not, alternatives may be able to be considered later on, with a security review being done for them. Universal Omega (talk) 20:59, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
mPDF is on track for a request filing at Phabricator next Monday (or a bit earlier if fate here permits). --Routhwick (talk) 00:21, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
Request has now been filed at T9582. (Although, with so many tasks on the backlog, seems it's gonna take a matter of days/weeks from here. To @Universal Omega: What's been holding things up lately?) --Routhwick (talk) 20:10, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
Since mPDF only offers single-page support and is almost exactly the same as the native "Printable version" feature, it's either I withdraw my request in favour of DocBookExport (which has multi-page support), or let it stay en route to a test run. (In case @Universal Omega: is keeping track.) --Routhwick (talk) 23:13, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Technical Director elections

Hi everyone, Please note the election period for the Technical Director position is currently taking place. This page provides for more details. Unlike Community Directors who represent the community, the Technical Director represents SRE and Technical Volunteers and as such only they are able to participate and vote. Reception123 (talk) (C) 17:55, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

Then there was no real reason to post it on the community noticeboard, then :/ Naleksuh (talk) 18:15, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
I agree it's definitely not the best place but I wasn't sure where else to put it to get the attention of the users concerned. Reception123 (talk) (C) 18:20, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
It can be put in the sitenotice for notification if it’s really important. Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 05:22, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
A sitenotice would make even less sense as it's very much directed towards a small group of volunteers. If it was a Community Director election then certainly. Reception123 (talk) (C) 09:00, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
Voting is now open. See Tech:Technical Director/Election/2022#Voting. --Reception123 (talk) (C) 19:22, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
I actually think community noticeboard was the best place to post this. Community noticeboard is not just for discussions, community proposals, etc. It is also for important pan-Miraheze announcements, and this is indeed one of those. Dmehus (talk) 02:01, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Lang prefix request for dkpedia.com

Requesting the addition of dkwiki.org, aka dkpt.miraheze.org, as Portuguese Brazilian (pt-br) langauge prefix on dkpedia. Essentially:

Site: dkpedia.com (donkeykong.miraheze.org)

Prefix pt-br (link: dkpt.miraheze.org, or dkwiki.org to be specific)

Can this be done? Portuguese DK Wiki's founder attempted to add his wiki as a language prefix, so I figured I'd ask here. Bawitdaba (talk) 21:40, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

Changing skin style of the wiki

This thread is moved from Stewards' noticeboard to here.

Is it possible to make my wiki (link) to use the same skin as this one or this oneCornelia (talk) 20:18, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

You can enable the skin, Cosmos, then enable it as the default wiki skin. LetraSeca (talk) 20:29, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
I don't know how to do it. Cornelia (talk) 05:22, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Please read ManageWiki, it's a very useful article. You can enable skins at Special:ManageWiki/extensions -> Skins and then enable it as the default skin at Special:ManageWiki/settings -> Styling -> Default skin. Agent Isai Talk to me! 06:24, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
@Cornelia: As this is supposed to be a question from a technical aspect of your wiki, which doesn’t require Stewards assistance, I have procedurally moved the thread to here. Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 06:33, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Thank you, I managed to set it. I also have a few questions: can I enable tabber? It doesn't seem to be working. How can I make <mainpage-leftcolumn-start /> to work on the Main Page (to make it into two columns like here)? Cornelia (talk) 15:45, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Tabber can be enabled at Special:ManageWiki/extensions#mw-section-parserhooks. The main page also uses <mainpage-rightcolumn-start /> to make two columns. ZeusDeeGoose (talk) 04:27, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

How to get a Skin?

I want to get the "Cosmos" skin, but it's not on my wiki. Can you tell me how to get the skin?  Spanish Fan (talk) 11:57, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

I believe the thread above has already answered this question. LetraSeca (talk) 16:03, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
It can be enabled at Special:ManageWiki/extensions#mw-section-skins. ZeusDeeGoose (talk) 04:28, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

Where do I announce my wiki for others to join?

Hi all, I created my work-in-progress wiki but I do not know where to post my announcement in this website as I want to attract users in joining and helping with my project of mine. Capybread (talk) 14:20, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi, commenting here as a volunteer. There are 2 ways if you want to promote your wiki to users here on Meta. (i) ask users to contribute to your wiki, with brief descriptions about your wiki in here, the community noticeboard; (ii) this is an indirect method, but putting your wiki’s name and brief description into Gazetteer of wikis may also be a good method. This is the page which users who are interested in joining different wiki communities will usually check. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 04:27, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

Please read User groups#Restricted local user groups. "User checker" (CheckUser), "Edit masker" (Oversight) and Steward are restricted to only Stewards, users who were elected by the global communities to use those tools and do many other things. Interwiki administrator is granted to users only following a successful local election for it. Agent Isai Talk to me! 14:48, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

Hey folks, is anyone interested in helping out my wiki?

https://athenaeumspaces.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page

Let me introduce my little project of mine! If you hadn't guessed, my wiki will be based on the concept of the backrooms while being similar to the backrooms fandom wiki. Although it is currently private as I am still working on it, I am in need of help finishing it. If you are interested, reply and comment to this post. I just need atleast three members to get this project going!

Moreover, I will wait for few days or so for this post to get more attraction. Depending on what day I will be active, you will get message and instructions from me, so don't forget about that to.

Have nice day everyone! Capybread (talk) 14:55, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

Anyone? 😭 Capybread (talk) 23:41, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
Frankly speaking, this isn't a good place to get attention for specialized creative writing projects. People who check Meta tend to have their own projects, have specific goals or otherwise aren't interested in long term commitments and tend to only raise a hand when there is a specific question/issue. You'll have better luck appealing to the communities that are already involved in the subject, without coming across as spam of course. --Raidarr (talk) 10:44, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
Oh.. so uh, would it better to advertise my wiki in the discord or fandom? 🤔 Capybread (talk) 12:25, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
I doubt you will be appreciated advertising a wiki for a competing platform, but if there is an appropriate discord server and place within it to post, that could work. --Raidarr (talk) 23:34, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
Oh, alright! Thanks for the advice!! Hope it works, haha 😅 Capybread (talk) 01:35, 27 July 2022 (UTC)

How often does Miraheze review new wiki requests?

How often does Miraheze review new wiki requests?

I remember a year or two ago, as long as a request was made, it would be answered within a few hours and all issues resolved.

However, Miraheze is now conducting centralized reviews on a 24-hour cycle, but each review does not resolve all issues - and it is those new requests (rather than old requests that may require further action) that cannot be reviewed at once, Just have to wait until the next day.

Is there something wrong with Miraheze recently, or is it just me being delusional? Creeper19472 (talk) 11:18, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

@Creeper19472: You are not crazy. I see on the wiki request list, someone has been waiting six days for their request to be processed. When I submitted my request to create my wiki, it was taken care of in a few hours. Darkrai18 (talk) 17:00, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
RequestWikiQueue is misleading. The date shown on there is the date of when the request was originally submitted. If a request is declined and later resubmitted, it'll still show the date of the original request, not the date that it was resubmitted so requests that were declined a year ago but resubmitted an hour ago will show up on the top as having been requested last year despite having been resubmitted just an hour ago. Agent Isai Talk to me! 00:03, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
It depends on who is reviewing and when. It could take within a few hours or the latter part of the mentioned '24 hour cycle', sometimes more since most wiki creators are not on daily and those who are still have days they don't look. It does take more thought to parse wiki requests than in the past as we are more stringent in some areas than even a year ago and it's possible we're in a slower spell for volunteers available to review right now, but aside from a couple instances lately I haven't seen an intolerable backlog.
I would imagine the 'waiting for six days' person was not a request that was literally waiting 6 days without response, I would want to know which request if so. The numbers can be misleading since sometimes a back and forth is required and it can take multiple passes for someone to make an acceptable request and some users find it hard to provide adequate detail for what they want. But that seems to be a different matter to what the OP is discussing. --Raidarr (talk) 23:50, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
It was the rupathfinderwiki request that had been first started over 6 days ago but just recently got edited and resubmitted. RequestWikiQueue shows the original date of when the request was first submitted, not when it was last edited and resubmitted which may be misleading. Speed

Is it just me or does miraheze wikis is little slower than fandom wikis when loading to another page? Capybread (talk) 01:11, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

Fandom, being a multimillion dollar company, has thousands of servers ready to serve users so you probably don't see too much lag with them. Miraheze however relies on donations and has a smaller set of servers as we're not so big so during times of peak demand, services may slow down a tiny bit. With the addition of new servers soon, we hope that may alleviate the issues we're seeing. Agent Isai Talk to me! 01:17, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
Oh, I see. By the way, when do you think will we have the same speed as the wikis from fandom? Capybread (talk) 23:08, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Importing templates

Hello, I have a wiki, Citypedia And I want the cite web template to work. But it doesn't work, I can't import it from the English Wikipedia. I want to import other templates, but I can't import them either. But why? What exactly do I need to do? Thanks :) Lois (talk) 12:10, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

Lua error

Hi, What does this mean?: Lua error in Module:Citation/CS1 at line 1392: bad argument #1 to 'pairs' (table expected, got nil). And this: Script error: No such module "Settlement short description". I'd like to understand the codes, but it's a bit much for me that my wiki doesn't work well. Thanks :) Lois (talk) 14:19, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Could you explain what you're trying to do? ZeusDeeGoose (talk) 23:14, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
I have imported some templates. And I must have imported them wrong. Or do I need to rewrite something in the MediaWiki.css file to make the templates work? I ask someone who knows how to do it to patiently explain it to me. Thank you so much. Lois (talk) 05:08, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
I think I can partially help in this issue. For the second error you mentioned, it means the module “Settlement short description” is required for the template to work, but it doesn’t exist in your wiki. Please try to import the module here to resolve the error. Cheers, Matttest (talk | contribs) 09:02, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
@Matttest Thanks, this is good, it works. However, now in the Reference section it says: Lua error in Module:Citation/CS1/Date_validation at line 946: attempt to index field 'inv_local_long' (a nil value).
I don't understand. All templates are already imported. What could be the error? Thanks :) Lois (talk) 12:52, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

Language bug ??

On all wiki across Meta, some wikis and user setting's language is Foreign Language, but they turns English including system messages and special page positions. For system messages, the most obvious changes is Pagetitle. Also, the HTML language is foreign language, but it always shows with English; For skins, it will be change to the new vector if the skin is default and/or it was imported by ManageWiki. What's the the matter with that?
