"Cannot access the database: Too many connections" Error

Should there be a Miraheze Incubator wiki?

Recently, I submitted a wiki request (#23213), which got declined for two reasons:

  1. The wiki creator who declined the request suggested running a community discussion on it, because it's related to the Miraheze community wikis.
  2. The wiki wouldn't be useful in many circumstances.

About the incubator wiki

An incubator wiki would basically be a storage place for users' mini-wikis, similar to Scratchpad on Fandom. Mini-wikis are like wikis, except that they don't have their own subdomain. Mini-wikis would be held indefinitely, unlike Scratchpad. Miraheze needs a wiki like this, because users must request wikis, and requests aren't always approved. This wiki would give users a chance to build up a mini-wiki before they request a wiki.

Benefits of an incubator wiki

  1. It would give users a place to build up a mini-wiki before making it a full wiki.
  2. Users wouldn't need to request for a mini-wiki.
  3. Users can create content without worrying about templates/modules. (Suggested by Arcversin)

Downsides of an incubator wiki

  1. Because users wouldn't need to request for a mini-wiki, there could be some Content Policy-violating mini-wikis. However, this problem could be solved by having a page for reporting mini-wikis. Alternatively, mini-wikis could be requested, but that would defeat the purpose of the wiki.

@Tali64³: As I mentioned in the request, I don't know of any circumstances where having created a "mini-wiki" would have an affect on whether a wiki request would get approved, so I don't see much of a use in that case. However, I do see a very good use case for mini-wikis, creating an environment for users to create content without having to worry about importing templates/modules and making them work. This—in a more limited fashion—was actually the use case for my essentially moribund althistorywiki that never really got off the ground (even made a template importing bot for it). — Arcversin (talk) 18:57, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

Efn Issue

I've have this template on my wiki that is one of which that provide notes, but something does not feel right with it; for better explaination, here's what it should be:

I believe you need to edit MediaWiki pages to create the group.

You can also create other custom groups. The ones you already have in the template are (the code can be copied from Wikipedia):
  • upper-alpha (A, B, C, D, E...)
  • lower-roman (i, ii, iii, iv, v...)
  • upper-roman (I, II, III, IV, V...)
  • lower-greek (α, β, γ, δ, ε...)
  • note, which by default will display note 1, note 2, etc.
But I believe you can name these groups anything and make as many as you want.

To use these, you just need to use group=lower-alpha in the reference (which you have already). This works for any groups you create.
To include only these references in the reflist at the end of a page, simply use the same code: <references group=lower-alpha /> (or whatever template you use). This will work for the same groups as in the Efn template by default, and any extras my adding the group name.

Creating a bot

I've been trying to create a bot and use AutoWikiBrowser to mass edit pages on my private wiki, but I'm stuck and really confused. Like REALLY confused. I've checked Wikipedia documentation, MediaWiki documentation, and elsewhere online but I haven't gotten any further.

What I've done

  • I think I made a 'bot account' (maybe)
  • I've used Special:BotPasswords to create a password for it
  • I've downloaded AutoWikiBrowser and typed my wiki name

What I need help with

  • When I try and login, it says I need a POST request
    • I can't find any help on this part in particular, and I have no idea how to progress further
  • I tried using api.php (to get the token and login with "action=login" with the name, password, and token), as suggested by Wikipedia, but it still says it needs a POST request

error when trying to upload music (in .ogg)

first, in the morning it was working, i was able to upload some .ogg files without problem.

but now, suddently, it says "[1ff3990555716a8e052e6a09] Exception interceptée de type Error" (in french)

but i noticed it is not always the same characters, they are always changing.

i just tried again and now it's "[793500edfc9d838907d28791]"...

and sometimes it says "[b3663e4e7c2102f811bdeb79] 2022-03-02 14:29:42: Erreur fatale de type « Error »" ... (still random numbers)

i tried to upload some picture and it works for it, i tried to upload some pdf over 3mb and it seems to work for it too... and i uploaded a mp4 file and it works too! ah and it does the same for mp3 files too.. and maybe it comes from there because the first time i tried to upload a file in mp3 format, it did that error;; maybe i should disable dthe mp3 format.. dunno

it seems to be only for music files (or at least ogg and mp3 files;; i tried to unnallow mp3 files and it still does the error..)

Hi there, apologies for the issue. This is due to an upstream bug with EmbedVideo. Try disabling it in Special:ManageWiki/extensions and you should be able to upload files once more. Agent Isai Talk to me! 14:39, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

ok it was still enabled by default (i didnt do it in the ManageWiki/extensions but in the complementary parameters... but, it still.. doesnt work
it is just like if it has been freezed... from the roots or something... maybe you could reset all parameters from the wiki from outside or somthing.. i dont know.. because it worked before... its just strange.

All that is needed on your email report is the name of the user, your username, and as much evidence as possible of what the user is being accused of. Reports which lack on-wiki evidence may be dismissed so it is vital that you link as much on-wiki evidence as possible and explain what Stewards should be looking at (i.e. if you link to a big discussion, point Stewards to a certain section where the user said a certain comment, etc.). The people who'll handle it on the Stewards' noticeboard are the exact same ones who'd handle it via email, that is, the Stewards. We're not like other platforms that have one set of staff that reply publicly and another which only work via email but in the end, this is all up to your personal choice and discretion. Private Wiki SSO

I'm working on a Wiki which helps students use facilities at the college where I work, and I am hoping to make this Wiki private to students and staff since it contains information that someone malicious may be able to use to hijack us. However, creating a user for every single student and staff member at the school in order to see this Wiki is not something that I would be able to do. I am hoping that I could somehow integrate Google SSO to the Wiki so that people can sign in just using their .edu account, but I have no clue to begin. I was wondering if this is even possible or if anyone here has tackled a similar issue with their wiki? Loving Miraheze so far! Tacstudios (talk) 19:13, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

If you will have need to add additional interwiki prefix configurations, did you know that you can hold a local election for local interwiki-admin, then after about five (5) to seven (7) calendar days have elapsed, reach out to any Steward, to request that the permission be added to your account on that wiki. :) Dmehus (talk) 03:17, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

the themes won't load on my wiki

Hi. I recently had my personal Miraheze wiki created. On it, no matter how hard I try, I can't change the theme on the wiki. I even popped on my alt to see if it was a bureaucrat issue, but no, the theme is still the default one.

Upcoming extension changes in preparation for MediaWiki 1.38

It's that time of year again, Miraheze is getting ready to upgrade to the latest version of MediaWiki, MediaWiki 1.38 (scheduled to be released later this Spring, 2022)! In anticipation for that, SRE would like to communicate a few extension changes that will occur shortly before we migrate to MediaWiki 1.38. Communities using these extensions will be notified via a sitenotice and will be advised on what they can do.

  • AddThis will be removed - While this won't be because of version incompatibilities, we do plan to remove it once we upgrade to MediaWiki 1.38. Miraheze respects it's users privacy and as such, we review all entries in our Content Security Policy to ensure that only secure websites with a good data handling approach are allowed to be loaded on Miraheze. While reviewing the entry for addthis.com (used by the extension), we were made uneasy by AddThis' data collection of non-EU users. As such, we must discontinue the extension in order to ensure user privacy. SRE hopes to potentially develop a privacy-friendly alternative very soon and will alert users to this potential alternative should it become available soon.
  • MagicNumberedHeadings may be removed - A change in MediaWiki code will cause this extension to no longer work on MediaWiki 1.38. Alternatives are being explored but it is very likely that the extension will be removed due to incompatibility with no replacement available.
  • Tabber will be removed - Tabber is in the process of being discontinued per T271418 (Wikimedia Phabricator) and is already marked as archived on MediaWiki.org. As such, we will have to drop remove it when upgrading to MediaWiki 1.38. Alternatives to the Tabber extension include TabberNeue which offers a sleek new UI and is a drop-in replacement for the original Tabber (meaning no code changes are needed to existing tabs!). We encourage users to migrate beforehand in order to have everything ready by the time we upgrade to MediaWiki 1.38.
  • $wgUseCategoryBrowser will be replaced by CategoryExplorer - A recent change in MediaWiki core code (T298553) removed $wgUseCategoryBrowser from the MediaWiki core and moved it into a new extension. Users of the setting will be migrated over automatically where possible and no real complication should arise from this.

Agent Isai, why is the AddThis extension being removed ostensibly per Content Security Policy concerns? I reminded your supervisor, Reception123, that the Trust and Safety reviewed the extension's privacy policies extensively, and they were satisfied with removing a related subdomain but leaving the addthis.com domain. When I reminded him of this, he had forgotten about that, and the indication I got from him was that he was satisfied that the extension could remain on Miraheze, at least until a functional replacement is developed, thoroughly tested, and deployed. In other words, because of that and because there's no incompatibility with MediaWiki, there's no urgency, and I believe it is vague and a bit lacking in transparency to suggest to the community that SRE was "uneasy" about data collection of non-EU users, without going into specifics. As such, I strongly urge you to strike the first bullet point from your notice. Nonetheless, I realize that is not your call unilaterally to make, so I will speak with Reception123 privately regarding this, as this would be within his scope/purview. Agent Isai Based on my conversations with Reception123 on IRC, it sounds like my proposed compromise on Phabricator task #T7876 was indeed Reception123's intention, such that AddThis would not be removed in tandem with the MediaWiki 1.38 upgrade completion, but rather removed at a time shortly after, but not before, the proposed and in development comparable replacement extension has been finalized, tested, and deployed. This could be, in theory, before or after the MediaWiki 1.38 upgrade. This, I think, would be an acceptable compromise to the community. In this case, all that would need effecting would be striking out only a small portion of your first bullet point and inserting correcting text to make this clear in your notification. A few questions about the Dormancy Policy

I have a few questions about the Dormancy Policy, or more specifically how it is determined to be inactive/closed. First off, what exactly counts as "activity". Since the notice says "edits and log entries", and the page here says "everything in recent changes", idk which one specifically it is. And do renames count, since I have seen multiple user renames which appear in recent changes yet do not seem to affect wiki activity. Also, despite what the Dormancy Policy says about wiki deletions, it often takes longer than six months for a closed wiki to be deleted, so why is that? As long as an edit is made to the wiki(not global changes like renames), activity will be recorded. SoyokoAnis 17:54, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Indeed, everything seen in the recent changes (excluding renames, those do not factor in) is counted as activity. Regarding wiki deletions, at 6 months, wikis are eligible to be deleted but are generally not deleted and dropped until a bit later when a systems administrator runs a deletion script. Follow-up: About the reCaptcha issue in mainland China

Last month 沈澄心 mentioned the reCaptcha issue that exists in some regions. I have investigated into it, and found:

  • The website uses google.com/recaptcha/ instead of recaptcha.net/recaptcha/ to load reCaptcha. However, not all regions are where Google provides service. So I suggest loading recaptcha.net directly, which has no region limits.
  • Also, in the https://www.recaptcha.com/recaptcha/api.js, not all regions use gstatic.com. For example, in mainland China, gstatic.cn is used instead, which is not in the Content Security Policy and will be refused to load in some browsers.

Besides, even if recaptcha.net and gstatic.com is normally loaded, the recaptcha still does not display, which I haven't found the reason.

The reCaptcha is actually widely used in mainland China, though Google does not provide most of services. So I think a solution to the reCaptcha issue can be found. SolidBlock (talk) 02:41, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

"the reCaptcha issue" refers to the issue of using reCAPTCHA at all. Miraheze has a free software commitment, and MediaWiki has an unobtrusive JavaScript commitment. As far as I'm aware, reCAPTCHA was added in Miraheze's early days, when Stewards and wiki creators were appointed by SRE and there was less community-driven decision making. In any case, I don't see the paradox as the proposed third-party authentication mechanism proposed would be blocked by board approval being required, irregardless of whether there was consensus for it. We used to use recaptcha.net but a bug with CAPTCHA assigning users bad scores while using recaptcha.net versus google.com caused us to change back to using google.com. @খাত্তাব হাসান: According to the penalty for adding a malicious link to the interwiki table, it is limited to only Interwiki Administrators (Local/Global) because adding malicious links to a wiki's interwiki table could cause the wiki harm. Change the previewed items

Hi, Could someone explain to me how not to include the previewed items like on the Mario Encyclopedia When you hover over the link, you only see the text, not the templates. @Darkrai18: I think you're talking about the Extension:Popups, you will have to disable it on your wikis Special:ManageWiki/extensions. And just a heads up, the behaviour has nothing to do with Extension:WikiSEO.

For example, this Luigi page inside the Mario page, the Luigi page has quote and templates, but when previewing it from the Mario page, those didn't show, In fact, the only thing that popped up was the LEAD section of the page (the page intro, or first paragraph) and the Image inside the about template.

Questions about wiki customization

I was told this is the right place to go if I have any questions about anything. So, I don't really have too much understanding of how exactly to get these working, but I want to have the background of my wiki be pink, and I also want to change the font to Comfortaa. I've looked up how to change these, and the answers I've found didn't work, weren't even related to my question, or were just confusing. I have a feeling this is just part of some sort of learning curve, and again, the fact that I have no clue what I am doing. I did at least get the sidebar(?) of my wiki to be pink, where the main page and recent changes and logo and all that is, but I also want the very top of the page to be pink, too, and I can't find anything about that. Might I be able to get some help with this?

No, the page body being white is fine. It's all fine now, it just took longer than I expected it to. There's this weird thing where the bottom of the page becomes black when in dark mode, but I think I can live with it. Thanks again. Special Page: Wanted Files not showing all broken files?

I just imported 2gb worth of media files and so I wanted to check if everything is in place. Now expectedly, when I click on random pages on my wiki, there are some files that are missing with broken red links.

However, when I check the Special Page for Wanted files, it only shows 27 pages - when I know there are definitely more than that.

Some pages that I checked that I *know* are missing files don't show up in this Special page. I just need a list of these files so I can properly upload them again - any idea how?

@Akibachans: hello, the problem is, there are over 100 files that are having text/plain MIME on your wiki, with the type of MIME, which is wrong, the images/media file are not going to display properly. Unnumbered parameter not working

So I have this specific code in here:

Upon using the template, the text meant to be displayed here "[[{{{2|{{PAGENAME}}}}}#{{{1}}}|{{{3|{{{1|}}}}}}]]" does not appear.

@FatBurn0000: Merging wikis has nothing to do with Special:Export AFAIK. Exporting all namespaces of your wiki, you can go to Special:DataDump on the said wiki, click on the submit button and the xml dump of the wiki would be generated in few minutes, after that, you can now download it.

  2. RLVW is not an exception. It depends on the case whether or not a wiki violates the content policy. RLVW is an encyclopedia, not a wiki that's spreading hate, therefore it's not a CP violation.

SEO tags alone won't ever be enough to make your wiki magically appear on Google. What you should do is sign up for the Google Search Console, submit a sitemap of your website and request that Google indexes it. Another thing that also affects whether your wiki appears on Google or not is how popular it is, if it has back links, and what other websites you're competing with. TypeError

My RFOBASIC wiki has Template:Navigation, which appears at the top of all editorial pages as a Table of Contents: https://rfobasic.miraheze.org/wiki/Template:Navigation

When reached from mobile, it gives: Fatal exception of type "TypeError". From the PC, it displays normally. I copied and pasted the common.CSS and the common.JS from Wikipedia an d followed the rules. Is there a step that I have missed or its just a glitch or a problem with the system? MOGAI Wiki

Hi there, this is a formal request for anyone who might be interested in helping out our Wiki, whether that be permanent or temporary. The MOGAI Wiki is an encyclopedia of MOGAI (LGBT) terms that has been hit with various issues (lack of editors, inactive mod staff, community frustrated with voting, etc), and because of it multiple mods have chosen to leave. Basically, I wanted to ask if anyone has interest in contributing and even perhaps becoming a mod. I can no longer handle the project, but I want to make sure A) there are enough moderators for the project to maintain itself if I left and B) we have enough active moderators to help us with the huge undertaking of editing thousands of pages that contain broken links and poorly formatted page styles from when we imported content of another Wiki last year. I realize that's a lot to ask, but I think there's no harm in trying. Every little bit helps when it comes to this, and we do have detailed page guides set out that can make this process fairly easy with a little copy/pasting.

How to use templates.. i realy D'ONT understand

Hello, i'm trying to make some layout and... i tried to use this : https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Template:Col-begin ... anyway, i don't understand , when i try to use it, i must ?? create a template ? is'nt it included in some standart database mediawiki ? it's not explained on the mediawiki page how to use... when i write {{col begin}} .. it just write "template: col begin" (with a link to the page of the template that is empty.. ... and in the mediawiki link for this template i dont find any CODE to put in it..)... so what ? how to use these standart templates found on mediawiki website ?

And isn't there a way to put all the standart templates found on mediawiki and activate all of them in my wiki ?

No, templates are not a standard part of Mediawiki. Everyone has to write their own and re-invent each others work. This is a huge failure of Mediawiki.
To use templates there are instructions at Copying from one wiki to another on Mediawiki.org.

All The Tropes briefly "404 Wiki Not Found"

Good morning! Approximately fifteen minutes ago (8:35 AM EDT US), All The Tropes disappeared from Miraheze for a minute or two. Attempts to access pages on it returned a "404 Wiki Not Found - We couldn't find the wiki you were looking for on our servers" notice. It came back while I was trying to figure out what was happening, but I wanted to bring it to the community's notice because, well, wikis vanishing (however briefly) is not a good thing. I have been scrapping some content form Wikipedia for my wiki, and sometimes I run across wikilcnks that use the abbreviated sister project format for the link such as: [[s:word|word]], and I am wondering how I can go about setting it up so that it properly formats and links to the external sister project wiki?

Some of the citation templates I have scopied for Wikipedia for instance link to the Encyclopedia Birtianica public domain sister wiki site. Any help of guidance would be greatly appreciated. Mitchell Gore (talk) 02:42, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

To fix broken Interwiki links, request here on the Community noticeboard that an interwiki administrator add the missing interwiki prefixes into your wiki's local interwiki table. For example, [[s:]] on Wikimedia projects redirects to the English Wikisource so you could request an interwiki administrator add that to fix those broken links. Permissions for other users

Sorry for asking such a basic question; I don't see it in the default text for bureaucrats. A search in Meta for "permissions" found many results, but at least none on the first page seems to cover this very simple case.

So I started a private wiki, filled it with a number of pages as a start and told the other users that they could use it. But neither do they see any way to ask for permission, nor do I see a way to grant permissions to them. So it seems that page name has been localized to “Spezial:Benutzerrechte”. I tried „Bestätigter Benutzer“ (confirmed user), since that was the only group that contained the word “user”, but that didn't allow the user to open any page other than the main page. Only after I granted both the „Bestätigter Benutzer“ and the „member“ (sic, that's not localized) rights was the user able to see a page and click on edit. No e-mail

In the previous section, I was pinged, but I didn't get an e-mail notification. The entry for Mention:Email in my preferences is checked, and there is an e-mail address in the user profile. Forking Wiki Questions

I've about reached the point where my wiki's prototype is finished and moving the wiki will come to a vote. First, however, I have a few important questions.

  • The images that my wiki currently has number in the hundreds, and even a zipped file of all images would be absolutely huge in size. Is it practical to go through the process of sending all the images to Miraheze system administrators, or is that just adding a time-consuming extra step and it would be better instead to just directly upload the images myself?
  • Are the wiki pages for images (File:imagename.png) considered images that won't be part of Fandom's data dump, or are they considered pages that retain things like noted copyright and added info?
  • If the images themselves don't move, does the file history still remember and credit the original uploader?
  • Does the history of transferred pages still list all of the edits and the original users that made said edits?
  • Is it possible for a user account associated with the old wiki to connect/redirect to a new user account created on the new wiki? And if so, could anyone claim any older username and history, or is that something that a wiki admin would be able to monitor and verify users are who they say they are?
  • If I have created a page on the new wiki with the same name as the old wiki, but since deleted it, does that take care of any "unpleasant situations" that could occur if an imported page has the same name? I did try to have any test pages/files include the word "test" in the name, but I know I forgot to do so once or twice.
  • The backup XML file for my wiki is roughly 5 MB in size, so is that a file too large to import myself, and instead do I need to request an import?

First and foremost, welcome to Miraheze! We hope you enjoy your stay!
1) You can ask that a systems administrator import the images by making a Phabricator task requesting that and attaching a link of the image dump to it. You can also send an image dump to sre@miraheze.org and mention on the task that the image dump has been shared via email.
2) Pages for images are included in the database dump so that should restore along with the images.
3) I believe the image will retain some history via the history tab but the actual image page which lists previous versions of the image will not display those old versions.
4) Yes, provided that the dump that is imported is one that contains full page history (which it should or else you'll incur in a copyright violation).
5) Anyone can register an account on the new wiki with their old username but doing so will not automatically claim any old edits. No one automatically claims the imported edits of a user, even if a new user exists under the name of a user from the old wiki. Imported edits, by default, show up as "imported>Username" or "wikia>Username" (as you're migrating from Fandom). To request that imported edits be assigned to a user, you need to ask that a systems administrator assign the edits via a maintenance script.
6) It should, yes.
7) You'll need to request it be imported on Phabricator.

A glitch I noticed

I have noticed that there seems to be a glitch in the comments section that causes comments to look like you upvoted or downvoted them by them being red or green even if you did not upvote or downvote them. I don’t know if this is only happening to me or if other users have experienced this. I had considered my account being hacked but it seems extremely unlikely that someone would hack into an account just to upvote and downvote comments. Blubabluba9990 (talk) 19:33, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

mw:Extension:Replace Text and patrolling

I used the extension, and all edits that the replacement produced are marked as unpatrolled, despite that I'm the bureaucrat and my normal edits aren't marked as unpatrolled. The extension's page said nothing about this. Why does this happen? Manually marking those edits as patrolled creates more work that completely negates the benefit that automatic batch operations would bring. Before this, I used Pywikibot, which didn't have this problem.

Also, what difference does patrolling make? In other words, how are patrolled and unpatrolled edits different other than the red exclamation mark in recent changes? If there is none, and if this is OK with Miraheze admins, I'd like to turn the feature off ($wgUseRCPatrol). --Jack980517 (talk) 03:12, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

It seems what you encountered was a bug in the extension which was just fixed a little bit ago by the extension's developer. They have implemented a fix but now we have to update the extension (which should occur in a week or two).
As for what patrolling does, it's just a way to show local administrators whether an edit has been "reviewed". It's useful on larger wikis in order to coordinate spam removal by being able to mark which edits have been reviewed and which still need to be checked for spam and other things. There's no different between both edits and neither the Stewardship nor SRE (Miraheze has no "admins" or "staff", it's a complicated term) would really care as it is your wiki however it seems that the setting is not within ManageWiki yet for you to toggle so it'll have to be added first. DummyFandoomMainpageTags extension not working

Back when my wiki was on Fandom, its main page used Fandom's provided tags (e.g. <mainpage-leftcolumn-start>) to organize the page into columns. As I ported everything over to Miraheze, I figured I could accommodate the now unfunctional main page tags by turning on the DummyFandoomMainpageTags extension via Special:ManageWiki/extensions. However, after waiting for all the extensions I turned on to work, all of them seemingly did except for DummyFandoomMainpageTags; the tags still only showed in plain text. I checked Special:Version to see if it was actually on, and there it appeared along with every other enabled extension.

To make matters even more confusing, when I previewed an edit to the main page that would have changed nothing, the tags worked as expected.

Could this behavior be owed to how the main page on my wiki is not under the title "Main Page" but rather "Mappercraft Wiki"? I initially suspected this, but MediaWiki:Mainpage listed the correct main page.

Otherwise, could this be due to an outdated extension that broke due to a MediaWiki update? I noticed that the last time the extension was updated was in 2018, so I would not be surprised if it were the case. AbolishSuburbs (talk) 20:12, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

This is due to either your local cache or the server's cache not being up to date and getting the memo that the extension has been enabled. Try deleting your local cache and purging the page's cache and the page should work as expected. Agent Isai Talk to me! 20:15, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

When I talk about your cache, I am referring to your browser cache. When I talk about the page's cache, I'm referring to the server-side cache. As it seems a local cache purge doesn't work, I suggest you purge the page's server-side cache by going into the "More" menu on the top of the page and clicking "Purge" (that is, if you're on the Vector skin). Creative Commons Licenses and License Changes

Hi, I'm helping (attempting to) on dpl3.miraheze.org wiki (Universal Omega's currently private, new wiki for the forked version of DPL3 extension). I want to import the DPL3 documentation from Fandom Community content, which is marked: "available under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 unless otherwise noted". There is no option for CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 in Miraheze, just CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (which seems fine?) though it's not clear if the Share-Alike portion of that license is required for adapted content (i.e., do we have to move to CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 or can the license be safely changed to CC BY-NC 4.0)?

Ideally, the latter would be nice, though my (very uninformed) layperson's reading of the Share-Alike description, suggests that adaptations may need to be SA also, based on its wording: "ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original." Does this mean the literal "same license," including "SA" portion? The moving a wiki page mentions that licenses can be changed.

Also, presumably, it's okay to bump the version number?... I'm very unclear on the safe way to proceed. If someone could please advise the correct way forward from a legal standpoint, that would be super helpful, thank you! | -- FrozenPlum (Talk / Email) 02:07, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

FrozenPlum, my understanding is that CC-BY-NC 4.0 is backward compatible with CC-BY-NC-SA 3.0 (ported or unported), so you should be okay with either license. That being said, if the license option is not available in ManageWiki, you likely will need to request a license change on Phabricator. If it's just you and Universal Omega as wiki contributors, that should be super easy to get all contributors to the wiki to agree to the license switch. Dmehus (talk) 02:31, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. For clarification, CC-BY-NC-SA 3.0 is not available in ManageWiki but the other 2 are. There are currently 3 wiki contributors, Universal Omega, Lens0021, and myself. I'll be frank, I'm having language comprehension problems today (and always, because cognitive problems from neuro condition), I clicked the "should" reference link, it made things less clear. To reiterate, is my understanding correct that:
  1. Staying with CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0 should be fine?
  2. Switching to CC-BY-NC 4.0 should also be fine (the desired outcome), but only if we first get the consensus of all 3 users?
I had no idea about needing consensus to change a license for a new wiki, I changed it on suggestion of Lens0021 without realizing this was problematic, or that it required this process on MH. Lens0021 suggested it because they thought the default CC-BY-NC 4.0 was a license incompatibility with CC-BY-NC-SA 3.0 of the content to be imported (was a fair suggestion/concern, and when brought it up I also thought it seemed incompatible, so reacted too quickly to rectify that, out of concern). I would now like to change it back to what it originally was (CC-BY-NC 4.0) since it sounds like that was fine all along. Do I now require consensus just to correct that mistake (keeping in mind, the wiki was since made private on suggestion until this could be sorted out to ensure no legal problems, with only UO and myself currently having access--perhaps priviting it was another mistake)?
Does consensus have to happen on the dpl3 wiki, formally, in the form of an RFC? I was only made a temporary bureaucrat to get some things set up in an attempt to help UO, it seems I'm failing miserably at all accounts. Can't mark as read notifications from other private wikis

Recently I've received a notification from other's private wiki, which I have no access to. I cannot mark the notification as read. If I remove the notification, the number just disappears temporarily, and soon later the notification becomes active again. I cannot mark the notice as read. Miraheze official QQ groups or channel

As one of the world's best known wiki farms, Miraheze also has a large number of visitors from mainland China, but they have a problem in that they cannot register an account and wiki creators cannot use Discord or IRC with recaptcha as a captcha to communicate with Miraheze officials, which greatly hinders the development of Miraheze in mainland China. So I suggest that Miraheze could set up an official (or semi-official) channel or a number of official (or semi-official) group chats on QQ, which would greatly help mainland Chinese visitors to participate in Miraheze. 城市酸儒文人挖坑 (talk) 23:59, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

Discord has been blocked in mainland China and I don't think Libera.Chat (IRC) uses reCAPTCHA. The main issue concerning captcha here is that Miraheze requires reCAPTCHA (https://www.google.com/recaptcha/api.js) on registration but China is blocking Google domains (and thus reCAPTCHA partially). I would suggest Miraheze switching to https://www.recaptcha.net/recaptcha/api.js since they have similar (or identical?) functionalities. (I am to open a separate issue in this noticeboard requesting this.)
And as Libera.Chat is not (yet) block in China, maybe some channels like ##miraheze-zh connect or ##miraheze-zh-offtopic connect can be an unofficial alternative? Kanakana (talk) 03:18, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

How to allow trusted people to visit a wiki

After putting in hours to get a wiki started for people helping refugees in our area, I am now disappointed that they aren't visiting the wiki, even though we all know each other. Because the wiki contains some sensitive or personal information, it can't be freely accessible to the general public, so I made it private. From the replies of those I asked privately, I gather that they are discouraged by the registration process, which I described to them as follows:

To get permission for this website, the following steps are necessary:

  1. Anyone who wants access must first register at Special:CreateAccount.
  2. Then tell an administrator (at the moment that's just me) the username so that he or she can grant access. (See FAQ#How_private_is_a_private_wiki? for details.)

Is there any easier way – one that requires only one step and has no wait time? One way I can imagine would be for me to assign user names and passwords to people I know and trust – is that possible?

Although I was hoping for wide participation from our group, I now resigned to the expectation that few would really contribute to the wiki – all I can hope for is that they all will consult and read it. (Even that would be an overall positive, since my goal is for them to have all needed information at their fingertips.) So I'm considering just creating a simple ‘reader’ account which then could be used by everyone. I'm aware that that's not the original idea of an account – which ideally should be personal. You can edit the permissions of users via Special:ManageWiki/permissions. You are also more than welcome to use Special:CreateAccount and tick the send password via email option to create an account for someone. I understand that your first sentence was meant to address my secondary question about a group just for readers. I could create such a group, but it isn't displayed on the user rights special page (“Spezial:Benutzerrechte” in German). Update: After I wrote the above, I realized I needed to set the permission to myself to change those rights, so I used (mywikiname:)Spezial:ManageWiki/permissions/sysop, and then the new permission group showed up in the user permissions page, so I changed the group to that. But that didn't help: The reader account still can edit pages! Anyway; I'm primarily writing this here for the record; I will pick this up when I actually need it. Update #2: OK, that problem is solved, too. I also had included the "createtalk" permission so readers could at least leave some feedback on the talk page. In addition to the above, if it is a private wiki, unless they have either the member or sysop group, they will not be able to view your wiki. So, you could create a Request access page, then add that page to your read whitelist, allowing non-members to make an on-wiki request to request access to your private wiki.
