This page provides information on closed wikis and defines the process of their adoption.
A closed wiki is a wiki which has been closed:
- automatically by the software after the inactivity of 60 consecutive days;
- by the local bureaucrats or those with the
managewikiright due to any reason;
- by Stewards, Trust and Safety team member or system administrators if the wiki has violated any of the global policies such as content policy, code of conduct, etc.
Presently, Miraheze hosts 5385 wikis and periodically closes the inactive ones. Because Miraheze runs mainly on the donations, it has to close the wikis which are inoperative or have been forgotten by the users to save the sources used to host a wiki.
Closure due to inactivity
All wikis which are hosted on Miraheze are subject to global policies such as Dormancy policy which states that after the wiki falls inactive for 60 days, it will be closed and made available for the adoption, see adoption of closed wikis below. An inactivity notice is shown on the wiki after it has been inactive for 45 days and fifteen days later, if no activity is seen, it is closed.
Adoption of closed wikis
On Miraheze, Adoption is the process in which a closed wiki is opened again following the request of a user who is interested to contribute in the wiki. Any user can request the adoption of any wiki but the wikis which are closed manually by the local bureaucrats or local community and those closed by Stewards due to content policy and code of conduct violations aren't eligible for adoption. The requests for adoption are made at Requests for reopening wikis page.
Procedure of adoption
Any user in good faith can request for the adoption of the closed wikis. A request will be made at Requests for reopening page where stewards handle the adoption requests. The request will be put on hold for a week and a steward will evaluate the request after that and will reopen the wiki. To obtain bureaucrat and administrator rights, you need to make a local election that lasts at least one (1) week, if performed successfully, you will obtain the rights of bureaucrat and administrator on the wiki. If there are more than one user requesting the adoption of same wiki, stewards may either ask for the opinions of other stewards and global Miraheze functionaries to evaluate the request or open the wiki to let users contribute and then decide the outcome of the request based on the contributions of the users to the wiki.
Stages of a closed wiki
|Day 45||Inactivity notice is placed on the wiki.||Wiki is open at the stage, so adoption isn't possible.||Wiki is open at this stage.|
|Day 60||Wiki is closed automatically.||Adoption isn't available.||Too new to be deleted unless there was zero activity in this time.|
|Day 74||The wiki will be made available for adoption.||Deletion is only done if no one requests adoption until inactive day 194.|
|Day 180||The wiki is marked for deletion.|
|Day 194||The wiki becomes eligible for deletion.||The adoption phase ends.||Any System administrator may delete the wiki at their discretion.|
- this includes the wikis where no edits or log actions have been performed for a period of 60 or more days. These wikis are also called as dormant wikis.
- However the wikis which were never used (i.e., have no activity on Special:RecentChanges, excluding user renaming and user merge notices) are eligible for deletion only after 60 days of inactivity
