Ecological Farm Business Data Harvesting Doodad Advice RequestEdit

I work for an organisation called the Landworkers' Alliance and am building a wiki to enable the UK ecological farming community to share business data. I would like to set up something than enabled farmers to submit their farm business data. Yield in kg/unit cost, where cost could be m2, hours labour, input costs, soil carbon, units of nature, etc. As well as maintaining a database of everyones contributed data, i would like a front end that generates range and average figures. I'm looking for something with fairly basic spreadsheet functionality.

These kind of benchmarks are going to be really useful for the growth of the sustainable farming industry. Could anyone advise me on how i could set something like this up? Check out this page of the wiki I am working on to get an idea about what I need. Thanks.x

Look into using ParserFunctions if you want to do calculations on pages (using features already available). As for the database stuff you mentioned, I'm not sure.
This may provide a start regarding calculations (could be used injunction with templates and tables of data — if you're not familiar with templates, this could be a large learning curve): https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:ParserFunctions##expr
Templates: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Templates
It may also be worthwhile to browse the extensions that could be enabled on your wiki, just right click on them and read their page on the MediaWiki website before enabling them in order to determine what it is used for. I am not currently aware of an extension that would be useful for you beyond the ParserFunctions. SchizoidNightmares (talk) 02:54, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How do I change permissions to only let myself and any staff I have with me edit a Wikia I currently have?Edit

I apologise if I did this wrongly, I am not very good at this Miraheze stuff yet, and I may have worded this wrong so I am so sorry on this one.

I am currently unsure how to word this but recently I've noticed there's a chance that others could edit the wiki, but while I wanted to let everyone see it for itself, I just wanted to be the only editor on it to avoid any vandalism or just flat-out trolling from other users (just in case).

I'm sorry if this confuses the staff, this is the only way I feel my mind can word this. I hope you're okay with context on this, that's all I know for now.

// TheLCMCShowOfficial (talk) 11:38, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that's a good idea. Also I don't think it's possible to do something like that. Iron Sword 23 (talk) 13:52, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TheLCMCShowOfficial: While I would discourage you from doing so, as wikis are based around collaboration (and you can always block the vandals), you could do so by removing the edit permission from the * and user groups at lcmcproincwikia:Special:ManageWiki/permissions, and then adding edit to the sysop group (which will allow you and any other admins you add to edit). You can also create another group with only the edit permission, which you can set to be assignable by sysops, that would allow you to grant edit access without admin access. — Arcversin (talk) 14:25, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
TheLCMCShowOfficial In addition to what Arcversin has said, if a member of your community proposed, via a talk page, to have a discussion to add back the edit permission to one of the default user groups, they could certainly request that, as your wiki belongs to your wiki's community, not any one bureaucrat. Dmehus (talk) 14:50, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
While I thank you three for helping me a lot with this, I will say that I’ve had idiots in the past that have vandalised my work on other sites, and I’d rather not have that happen here either. That being said, I do have a staff crew on an alternate website where we talk, and they seem to be okay with it. I am only doing it to make sure social anxiety and worry of future problems don’t screw me up. I also want to apologize here for the fact I edited this on an iPhone as I speak (1:48am AEST or something?)
If the group thinks its okay to add some people to help out with the Miraheze thing, maybe in the future, but they are okay with this happening. Thanks for letting me know ^^” TheLCMCShowOfficial (talk) 15:48, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I doubt vandals would try to propose such a discussion anyway and, if they did, I'm sure your active community of editors would oppose such a proposal or otherwise close it expeditiously. No problem. Dmehus (talk) 15:52, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've managed to try and get permissions fixed, and thankfully they work, however I am trying to make sure I can make edits and such. the asterisk and such thing are doing well enough thanks to the three of you. I am currently looking to ask one or two of the members in my discord group to see if they want to join.
...let's just say I can't really add "grandmanager" to myself (I'm not too smart, lol). TheLCMCShowOfficial (talk) 13:37, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dmehus I have a bit of a problem now, I can't edit my wikia without adding "grandmanager" to myself, and unfortunately I am somehow unable to do that myself. Can someone please help me out with this? TheLCMCShowOfficial (talk) 10:13, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think you should go to the "manage this wiki's permissions" section. DuchessTheSponge (talk) 10:43, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
TheLCMCShowOfficial I've found the wiki you're referring to, but both the GrandManager and bureaucrat groups, the latter of which you certainly have, have the managewiki user right, so you should be able to make any changes you need to. What is the issue that you cannot do? Can you clarify this a bit? Also, I noted you have capitalized your group name. This is sub-optimal and not desired and/or recommended. It's best to use all lowercase characters, no underscores, and no spaces in group names. You would then stylize your group names' displayed names using [[MediaWiki:Group-groupname]], where groupname is your specified group name. Dmehus (talk) 14:37, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
uhhh... i'm not exactly sure how most of that works. I'm not exactly smart with this stuff. I probably should have made sure it was all lowercase though, I think. The issue I can't do is actually edit the articles, mostly because I can't change my permissions to have "grandmanager" added to myself unfortunately. I'm not sure what to do, and I apologise for not having a clear mind when I reply usually. TheLCMCShowOfficial (talk) 04:01, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I somehow can delete and move pages but I can't edit for some reason :< TheLCMCShowOfficial (talk) 13:30, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry to ping Dmehus again, but I worry that if I can't edit any of the articles again it might go private again :/ I am so sorry to have to be a pain at this time TheLCMCShowOfficial (talk) 03:18, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
TheLCMCShowOfficial Looks like you need to add yourself to the allowededitors group on your wiki, as you're missing the (edit) user right. Please click here to do this. Alternatively, let me know if you wish me to do this for you, and I can take care of it from Meta Wiki. :) Dmehus (talk) 05:19, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Could you just please do so? I’d rather not break my user permissions anymore out of worry I’d make it worse XD TheLCMCShowOfficial (talk) 05:21, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
TheLCMCShowOfficial I actually see the issue. You hadn't set any groups to grant the allowededitors user group. So, I've now Yes check.svg added the ability for your sysop group to add and the remove the allowededitors group using Special:UserRights on your wiki. Please enter your username there, and try and adding that group to you now. Dmehus (talk) 05:32, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I’ll try that, thanks :) TheLCMCShowOfficial (talk) 05:34, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Okay so I still can't add grandmanager to myself, but I can finally edit my miraheze again, thanks so much for that. If you want to try and add Grand Manager to myself you can, I'm not forcing. But again, thank you. talk) 08:49, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
trying to replying again sorry @Dmehus (it didn't work for me for some reason?). I'm sorry to do this TheLCMCShowOfficial (talk) 11:49, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok another small problem, but it now says "There is currently no text in this page. You can search for this page title in other pages, or search the related logs, but you do not have permission to create this page."... I'm not very good with the granting on them and such at all, I don't think its possible for myself to add the group thing or whatever the problem may be. I apologise again but wow this is difficult. TheLCMCShowOfficial (talk) 11:49, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── TheLCMCShowOfficial Yes check.svg Resolved. It looks like you created your grandmanager group, but didn't first give the bureaucrat group the ability to add and remove that group. So, in the future, you'd need to do that and, once you've added the grandmanager group, you would, presumably, remove the ability for bureaucrats to add and remove it. In any case, I've now Yes check.svg fixed this for you. Dmehus (talk) 15:57, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would like a back-up, then a deletionEdit

I would like to give you some more room. Miraheze has been good for me, but I have lost interest in my project. Please give me a back-up & send it to mainawill(at)gmail.com, & then delete it. Thank you. Anjuna (talk) 13:17, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Anjuna Normally requests for wiki deletion are requested at stewards' noticeboard, but this is fine in this case as you've asked a question. With regarding to generating a backup XML dump of your wiki, you can do this in Special:DataDump on your wiki. Please link to your wiki when this has been done. Thank you. Dmehus (talk) 13:28, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Anjuna (talk) 00:58, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

https://anjuna.miraheze.org/wiki/Special:DataDump Anjuna (talk) 09:16, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You should be able to go back into Special:DataDump and download the dump(s) you generated after a couple minutes. Make sure you generated both an XML dump of your wiki and a backup dump of your images. Dmehus (talk) 13:06, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I can't use VisualEditor without changing URL!Edit

Is there any misconfiguation or something that did not allow me to use VisualEditor without changing my URL from ?action=edit to ?veaction=edit?

I have turned on $wmgVisualEditorEnableDefault, $wgVisualEditorEnableDiffPage, and also turn off any other code editor on Special:ManageWiki/extension.

edit: That's not a problem with anon users.   Song Ngư MGR (talk) 03:35, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I did not get answer soon for every questions I ask, even in Phabricator or Discord, why :( Song Ngư MGR (talk) 08:14, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have "Use the wikitext mode inside the visual editor, instead of a different wikitext editor" enabled and, conversely, have you disabled (unchecked) "Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta" in Special:Preferences or Special:GlobalPreferences? Dmehus (talk) 13:07, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
$wgVisualEditorEnableWikitext? No, WYSIWYG is alway the justice.
And about the second one? no... and never! I did not allow myself to turn on that thing. Song Ngư MGR (talk) 14:02, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what the issue is. Can you explain this in a bit more detail, perhaps by including the specific error or posting a screenshot? As far as I know, there are absolutely no known bugs with VisualEditor. Note that VisualEditor won't work for anonymous users, as far as I am aware. I mean, it might be possible, but I recall reading it's not recommended for anonymous users. Dmehus (talk) 02:05, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Song Ngư MGR Thanks, that's helpful. I had a look at your wiki, and I was able to use VisualEditor on your wiki, so I'm not quite sure what's wrong. In fact, the VisualEditor loaded automatically for me as soon as I clicked the "edit" or "edit source" tab. What do you have set in the "Editing" tab of your Special:Preferences? Dmehus (talk) 05:09, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmehus: Let's see, I'm usually using my global settings and I actually don't see any settings that alter the VisualEditor option.
PiscesMGR-diss-002.png Song Ngư MGR (talk) 05:44, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Song Ngư MGR Face-smile.svg Thank you. That's extremely helpful, and I see the issue immediately. Under the Editor options, you have made the "use the wikitext mode inside the visual editor instead of a different wikitext editor" as a global preference; however, you've not enabled it. It's a bit confusing with Special:GlobalPreferences in that the first, left most checkbox just makes the preference global. It is the second, right most checkbox that enables/disables that global preference. Hope that helps. Dmehus (talk) 05:59, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I could use VS now, but I still need to change URL to have WYSIWYG since it still only shown an "Edit" button and it blocked the direct edit option. Song Ngư MGR (talk) 06:12, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ManageWiki helpEdit

Is it possible to revert or undo a manage wiki change? Ugochimobi (talk) 16:41, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so. Iron Sword 23 (talk) 16:43, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ugochimobi: Yes, though you'd need to look at the logs to see what you need to reverse, as there isn't a rollback button for managewiki changes. — Arcversin (talk) 16:43, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Arcversin: How do I do that? Ugochimobi (talk) 16:45, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ugochimobi: Go to Special:Log/managewiki on the wiki where you wish to revert a change. — Arcversin (talk) 16:56, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Arcversin: Okay..... Ugochimobi (talk) 17:04, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Arcversin: there's never a button to revert or undo Ugochimobi (talk) 17:07, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ugochimobi: You can't revert it with a button, you need to see what you changed and then use the normal managewiki interface to revert those changes. — Arcversin (talk) 17:24, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Arcversin: Nothing is working Ugochimobi (talk) 18:00, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ugochimobi: What are you trying to revert, specifically? — Arcversin (talk) 18:12, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Arcversin: I actually made some configuration on my Namespace on FAMEData I need to revert it cuz it's causing a Bad title result when you try to create a new item. Ugochimobi (talk) 18:16, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ugochimobi: The log doesn't mention what changes you made to the Main namespace, but re-creating the Item namespace would likely fix it. — Arcversin (talk) 18:26, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Arcversin: that's exactly what i've just done.. Just hope it's gonna help Ugochimobi (talk) 18:27, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Need to ask somethingEdit

I created a Ideas NG today and it's showing 0 articles. Anyone have advice?--Iron Sword 23 (talk) 21:21, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Care to elaborate by what you mean? (A) Are you meaning there is no content being added? (B) Or that the MediaWiki software is not recognizing your article count? If B, looking at https://ideasng.miraheze.org/wiki/Special:Statistics your articles seem to be recognized by the system. If A, it's normal for few content to be added to new wikis if it is only founded by one person. I would go with the assumption that for some time to come you will be the primary contributor — at least until you have built up your wiki. Of course, it depends on how popular your subject matter is and whether or not there are competing wikis offering the same information. SchizoidNightmares (talk) 20:29, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Linter doesn't workEdit

Hello!
The extension "Linter" doesn't update and doesn't find Lint errors. For example on nonciclopedia, here there are listed ONLY 10 errors, but with my bot I've found 2,000+ errors.--Angelo Pisani (talk) 11:06, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Angelo Pisani Thank you for your report. Can you please file a Phabricator task about this? My first thought is that there is possibly a maintenance script that needs to be run to update the Special:LintErrors special page, or possibly we need to set something up on a cron like we've done for other special pages. It may also be an issue with the internationalised names of the non-English Special:LintErrors special page, too, as I know a similar issue existed with other extension(s) in the past on non-English wikis. Please make sure your link to the permalink of this request in your Phabricator task. Dmehus (talk) 13:33, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

$wgAllowExternalImages not working?Edit

Hello. I've enabled $wgAllowExternalImages, and I'm pretty sure I'm using correct syntax, but it seems that the external image is not getting embedded for some reason. You can see it here.
Am I missing something obvious?

Also, on somewhat related note, is it possible to use $wgAllowExternalImagesFrom instead of $wgAllowExternalImages since a whitelist seems like a more sensible way to manage it? I don't see it in the settings.
Thank you. 21x (talk) 12:04, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, We'll need to whitelist xkcd on our end before it'll work. You can ask on phab and we'll have a look at adding it. ~ RhinosF1 - (chat)· acc· c - (     around) 12:17, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So, $wgAllowExternalImages does not actually enable all external images, only whitelisted domains? Can I see the list of whitelisted domains somewhere? I'm hesitant to actually request this via a ticket because I don't anticipate it's something that would be used extensively, so it seems like I'm just generating busywork for the admins.
I might just upload it then, since Miraheze meets the NC condition of the XKCD license. Thank you for clarifying. 21x (talk) 12:47, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's correct. You can see an up-to-date transcluded version of the Content Security Policy whitelist here. I personally would support adding *.xkcd.com as the images are copyrighted, so it would be problematic from that perspective to have wikis uploading copies of images to their wikis, most of which would not likely be done in accordance with Fair Use or Fair Dealing exemptions. Dmehus (talk) 13:29, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to me that Miraheze comfortably falls under the NC condition of the license. XKCD license page even mentions that 'reprinting occasional comics (with clear attribution) in publications like books, blogs, newsletters, and presentations' is okay.
But yes, to my non-lawyer knowledge, EU case law (which was transposed into UK law upon Brexit) deems hotlinking to generally be legal unless the host site itself is infringing, so whitelisting XKCD would reduce the copyright-related risks for Miraheze. 21x (talk) 14:04, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's conceivable XKCD comics could be used with a Fair Use or Fair Dealing exemption, but the problem is, so many wikis don't properly attribute and summarize licensed content they do not own. Allowing external images would be helpful in that Miraheze would not be hosting improperly attributed content and, if it became so problematic, XKCD would have recourse to easily disallow hotlinking. But yeah, I do favour whitelisting this domain. Dmehus (talk) 14:07, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Use Miraheze for a start-up to develop a business planEdit

Five people are working together to develop a business plan for a start up. Would a private wiki on Miraheze be an acceptable activity? Gerald 13:56, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Yes, that's absolutely fine. You just can't use your wiki to hawk products or services for a fee, or have paid advertising on your wiki which generate revenue for your wiki. A private wiki is a really good idea, though, and you can add users to the member group using Special:UserRights on your wiki. Dmehus (talk) 13:58, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Reception Wikis as a wiki categoryEdit

I think that “Reception Wiki” should be added as one of the wiki categories since Reception Wikis are extremely prevalent and common on Miraheze to the point where they have almost become synonymous with each other. Currently, the reception wikis are scattered throughout categories, though most of them are uncategorized. Also, there is a category called “Song Contest” which is probably exactly as it entails. The Reception Wikis are also the most active Miraheze wikis, so I think that they should be a separate category. Blubabluba9990 (talk) 18:12, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree if the present system doesn't already classify them in a manner that makes identification more efficient. I would be curious to know just how many wikis are of this nature on Miraheze. SchizoidNightmares (talk) 20:38, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@font-face {
	font-family: Pusia;
	font-weight: bold;
	src: url("dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/8rzi2amraawt8xl/Pusia-Bold.woff");

Not that I'm aware of. What you might be thinking of is ?uselang=qqx which shows you the system message that provides the source MediaWiki: interface page for each interface message. -- Void Whispers 00:57, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I was think that could shown the element's class name '_'

A countdown clock.Edit

Is there a way to create a repeatable countdown timer that could help me count down repeatedly when a Trophy Season in Brawl Stars is ending and then countdown again for the new season? Song Ngư MGR (talk) 08:33, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure about an animating countdown timer, but you can do something similar using ParserFunctions by subtracting dates after converting them into numerical values: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:ParserFunctions
The result will be static however (at least won't update on the page without a refresh). SchizoidNightmares (talk) 19:39, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You can also use Lua for this. For example, the English Wikipedia utilizes Module:Countdown. Other than that, if you want a live countdown timer, you would probably need to do a JS gadget. I could see about throwing one together for you if you'd like. -- Void Whispers 02:18, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I'd like to ;)
Actually I feel myself just a beginner on my little journey '_' Song Ngư MGR (talk) 03:34, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Void: So how would you do the way?

How can I use interwiki?Edit

Hi Dmehus

After a few searches in the manuals, I found the extensions interwiki. Apparently I can use it to build my wiki in different languages and then link them. I couldn't do it with the extension translate because the language switcher doesn't work the way I want it to. And I don't want the additional language switch above the page text. It's not pretty and it gets really big when you've translated many languages.

In the extensions I have not found any interwiki that I can activate.

a) Is it basically possible to use interwiki on miraheze to have the wiki in different languages?

b) If so, how should I proceed?

c) Or is there another solution without interwiki, besides the one with the language switch above the page text?

Many Thanks! Linuc (talk) 13:37, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You can contact an Interwiki Administrator to add them to your local Interwiki Table. Bukkit (talk) (C) 13:42, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your answer. Do you know anything more about it?
a) How do I create another wiki for an additional language? Do I have to open another account with miraheze? Or can I have several wikis with one account?
b) How does the translation work? Do I just set up the second wiki in the second language without the translation function of miraheze? That would mean that changes in the basic language would not automatically "request" a change in the translation?
c) Is there a solution with multiple languages but only one wiki? Without the additional language switch, as you can see in the following link?
mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Contents
d) In this example I can switch the language at the top of the page text. But the sidebar remains in English :-(
e) I need a simple language switch in the sidebar (or in the top right above the text), which switches all elements, i.e. sidebar, menu, footer AND page text. The language switch should only be a small selection field, either with all languages, or only with the available translation languages of my wiki.I have both turned on in my wiki. But they didn't work. At the moment I have NO translated pages, I deleted them.
linuc.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page
f) Can I still set up my wiki in English without running into a dead end? Will it be translatable by any of the methods if they exist? Linuc (talk) 15:00, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
a) You could create multiple wikis for your wiki's languages, but all of them still need to be requested on Special:RequestWiki.
b) You mean the Translations extension? It would create a subpage corresponds to the language you translate to compared to the original, i.e: Your original page was English and the Vietnamese translation of the page going to be placed on the page's /vi subpage.
c) Use Translations.
d, e, f) I don't have much good at English since I was just joining Miraheze over an month, so I can't help you with the rest of them. Song Ngư MGR (talk) 15:15, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Song Ngư MGR!
So I have understand the first point well and know now where I can ask for the wikis in other languages.
The use of translation I understand and I tested it already. It obviously uses the page translation method and not the entity method. With the entity method, no new pages are generated, just a translation table for the text, field, title, etc.
Unfortunately, the language switcher does not work correctly with this method. It only switches the sidebar, the menu and the footer, but not the actual page. If you then click again on the page in the sidebar to display it in the desired language, the language jumps back to the basic language, also in the sidebar, the menu and the footer. The translation of the page will NOT be displayed. It is not clear to me whether miraheze is working on a solution. But there's something like that in beta, I've seen.
In order to be able to display the translations, you have to activate the additional language switch by inserting the code lagnuages / into the page. But this switch is ugly and becomes very large if you have many languages, because it shows all of them (see the example link above). That is not the solution. In addition, only the page text is switched, but not the sidebar!
So I hope that the support will still work here and that I get a clear answer to my first 3 questions, respectively. the detailed questions c, e and f.
However, I won't wait long, because it's already the 2nd time that I ask support and don't get a clear answer. If it doesn't work, I'll set up my wiki somewhere else, or host it myself. Or I just do a WordPress site, where the translation and language switching work perfectly.
But I would prefer a solution with miraheze, if it works :) Linuc (talk) 17:30, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Linuc Are you on IRC and Discord? Questions that involve a lot of back-and-forth are often best asked off-wiki. Feel free to join us in #miraheze connect on IRC or in the #general channel on Discord, so we can understand your questions better and help you better. Dmehus (talk) 17:36, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also, have you consider a multilingual wiki with the Translate extension? It's fairly easy to use, and I personally prefer it to interlanguage wikis. Dmehus (talk) 17:38, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Dmehus

I think my questions are clear, or where do you not understand? Do you have a test system? If so, then test the language switching. Are there any beta developments on this topic?

I simply need a solution for my wiki in 4 languages with a pleasant language switcher. There are two of them, one in the sidebar and one in the top right as you can see on my wiki. I would prefer the one in the sidebar.

And I would like to solve it without interwiki, that's less work. And it doesn’t have to be that I have 4 wikis, if one can work. Better for you guys, less work.

The only thing I do NOT want is that ugly language switcher at the top of the page text. You can see in the example above how it looks with many languages. Bad!

So, let me know HERE if it's possible, either with translate and the normal language switcher, or with interwiki. Then I make the decision whether to stay here or to move.

Thanks! Linuc (talk) 18:05, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Linuc While I haven't yet read all of your follow-up questions, the fact that you have further follow-ups suggests that on-wiki support is sub-optimal; thus, my recommendation to join us on IRC or Discord? In any case, if the issue is with the language switcher, you'd have this problem self-hosting or hosted by Miraheze, so I'm not sure how self-hosting would solve this? Can you ideally join us on IRC or Discord and clarify what you mean? Or, failing that, rephrase your question(s)? Dmehus (talk) 18:09, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Linuc We also have Public Test Wiki where you can request testing permissions and try out the Translate extension fully in your own userspace. :) Dmehus (talk) 18:10, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You can also put the language switcher at the bottom of the page, as we do here. Dmehus (talk) 18:11, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not here to test miraheze, that's your job. And I'm not here to test MediaWiki, that's MediaWiki. And I'm not here to post my questions in a thousand other places, either. If the first-level support cannot provide the answers, then it is your job to investigate with the second-level support. This is called customer service. But you obviously have no idea about that with miraheze.
I am here to do my work on my wiki! But I see that an open-source project is dying here too, due to a lack of competence.
Last chance for miraheze, I'll check back in 24 hours. Or I'm gone. Very bad service, really very bad! Linuc (talk) 22:16, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And because you don't have a test system anyway and don't even read the users' questions, you can test it out on my wiki ... and read
One page is translated, the main page:
linuc.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page
linuc.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page/de
There are also two pages for display in the sidebar:
linuc.miraheze.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Mainpage
linuc.miraheze.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Mainpage/de
The language switch on the top right of the page is activated (LanguageSelector). Also the one in the sidebar below, with the extension (UniversalLanguageSelector). Beta extensions are also activated.
a) When I'm logged in, both switches work, but only for the sidebar, the menu and the footer. The page is not switched. If I then click on the page (News / Neuigkeiten) again in the switched sidebar, the translation is displayed. That is NOT ENOUGH!
b) If I am not logged in, only the switch at the top right (LanguageSelector) switches the language in the sidebar, menu and footer. The one in the sidebar (UniversalLanguageSelector) doesn't do anything. If I then click on the page (News / Neuigkeiten) again in the sidebar, the language jumps back to English and the German page is NOT displayed. This is CRAP!
Solve the problem! In 24 hours! Linuc (talk) 23:05, 10 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's a week now, since the problem is posted!
meta.miraheze.org/wiki/Stewards%27_noticeboard#How_do_I_view_a_translated_page%3F Linuc (talk) 00:09, 11 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Please remember that we're all volunteers here; no one on Miraheze is paid anything, and we're entirely donation-funded and volunteer-run. We have scarce volunteer resources. We can only solve the problem if it's (a) sufficiently explained and (b) have volunteers familiar with it. In this case, you've provided some additional detail, which is helpful and appreciated; however, UniversalLanguageSelector is not my level of expertise, so I'll have to bow out here, and allow someone else to take over. Alternatively, I do encourage you to join us on IRC in #miraheze connect as we have a broader support community there. Dmehus (talk) 01:13, 11 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

First: The problem is described enough and you could even test it 1:1 on my wiki! But you wrote that you haven't read all of my posts yet! So I guess you didn't test it on my wiki either.

Second: After only 2 hours of research on the Internet, I found perfect instructions on how to install and configure MediaWiki, including internationalization and localization (i18n and L10n). Do you not read such things?

Third: In my further investigations, I have found that, in addition to other wiki such as xwiki, there are also very strong Wordpress solutions and some go far beyond the level of MediaWiki. For example Yada Wiki, BuddyPress Docs, BetterDocs - Best Documentation & Knowledge Base. There are also wiki themes for Wordpress, for example MyWiki, MyKnowledgeBase, Flatbase, KnowHow. And there is even a method with custom code snippets, which allows a lot of configuration options. So one wonder why one don't choose the simple solution, instead work on miraheze for a whole week to solve a problem that doesn't exist anywhere else!

Fourth: The excuse that an open-source project only works with volunteers and only with donations is just an excuse. Many Wordpress projects also work this way and still work. But the problem is that with open source projects there is not a sufficient organization to take care of the resources. That would be all the more important because resources are scarce! But project management is a foreign word for most "Linux experts" and "opensource experts", isn't it? The consequence of this is that there are probably a few million projects, but only a few are successful. Unfortunately, this means that thousands of users are drawn into the problems of open source projects and ultimately have no working solution. But the "experts" don't care because they just want to present themselves as "experts"! I call such people "psychopaths".

Fifth: You announce an update for tomorrow. Wow, how are you going to manage a new version if you don't have the old one under control? Have you tested the new version extensively? Have you trained the support on the new version? Have you adapted the documentation to the new version? I think all questions can be answered with no. You just do an update on a system with a few thousand wikis and hope that it will somehow work. And if not, then the user should take a look himself. Is it not so?

Sixth: For these reasons, I will NOT carry out my project on miraheze, because I am not interested in spending a lot of time here just to have a well-functioning basic system. As soon as I have finished evaluating my alternative system, I will redirect my wiki, resp. post the new link in my news. You failed! Linuc (talk) 18:22, 11 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In reply to each point:
  1. The user in question understood the problem and clearly demonstrated this by stating your concerns wouldn't be solved by using MediaWiki in another environment as you would experience the same problem in all installs because the behaviour is the software - not Miraheze.
  2. We have read this, extensively over the past 8 years most of us have run wiki farms that are fully internationalised. We host numerous large scale international communities - including this wiki - which work perfectly fine.
  3. It is nice that you have found alternative software to MediaWiki for your needs.
  4. Miraheze actually does extremely good work with its very limited resources. Miraheze works this way - just because it isn't able to provide you with dedicated 24/7 support over all the other communities we host and because we are not able to create custom bespoke solutions to problems that have already been solved when we are actively trying to solve problems that have no solutions to date doesn't make Miraheze 'unsuccessful' - if anything is speaks volumes for its 'project management' abilities. The user you're implying is a 'psychopath' has never claimed to be an 'expert' and isn't associated with the few technical resources Miraheze has - they are a user just like you who has chosen to support and provide help to other users in their own spare time rather than come along and demand immediate supporting, setting artificial timelines so they can complain 24 hours later that the volunteer who has no commitments to support you, hasn't.
  5. The new version has extensively been tested by volunteers, including those not even associated to the technical side of the project, like yourself. We don't have support to train - we are a purely technical project who provide the platform, software and service. Users like yourself are the ones who provide the support and do a very good job of it. No documentation has been adjusted - because we don't maintain the software documentation, that is handled by MediaWiki itself.
  6. For these reasons outlined above, I think the community would also agree it is happy you are not carrying out your project here as you seem to have no respect for our community, our volunteers or our project. The only one who failed here I believe would be yourselves are you have violated our policies on good conduct, have made unreasonable demands on volunteers exactly like yourself and complained that the software we provide doesn't suit your needs and rather than put the effort in yourself to adapt your own wiki to do what you want, expect us to adjust our focus away from providing the entire service and focus on supporting your community. If you deem your own effort is not worth the time, how could you reasonably expect us to justify allocating our scarce resources to achieve what you feel is worthless rather than supporting the many other projects that add value to the world and deem theirs worthy? You failed. John (talk) 14:38, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:Linuc As just another user, and not somebody affiliated with the project, let me reiterate: Mireheze team owes you less than nothing. What part of 'community, non-profit, volunteer run' don't you understand? Mireheze is an oasis in the wasteland of other 'free wiki hosting' services, and it is better off for not having entitled users like you around. You need to head over to mw:Hosting services, find yourself a commercial provider with 24/7 support and pay them to answer your demands. 21x (talk) 18:54, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
