I am more than confused regarding my identity when interacting with Miraheze or it's representatives and/or community.
  +
  +
Of course, I am a newbie here – my wiki went online only 2 days back. So, much experience to be gathered. This is not a criticism of the resources and free hosting that Miraheze has supplied. It is more in the way of asking a question.
  +
  +
It seems that Miraheze provides a plethora of means by which I can contact a human but they are not all immediately transparent as to how each should be/are used.
  +
  +
I will list them here, for the avoidance of doubt;
  +
  +
Contact us
  +
• IRC: #miraheze (recommended)
  +
• Discord: https://discord.is/miraheze
  +
• Facebook: Miraheze
  +
• Twitter: @miraheze
  +
• On-wiki: Help center
  +
  +
For reasons specific to me, none of these are viable means of casual chat like, for example, "How do I get yellow text on a black background?". Sure, the answer is "Look at Mediawiki – they have loads of help". And they do, and that question would be answered. No problem.
  +
  +
It is not the answer that is my problem, it is the medium by which I am forced to ask any question. That is my problem. Maybe it is only MY problem.
  +
  +
We can discard Facebook and Twitter since I refuse to give those entities any semblance of control in my life. I have discarded IRC because I really do not want to learn another new thing (I'm already learning wikimedia and wikidata) and the On-wiki Help centre is not a chat channel.
  +
  +
That leaves Discord. I am very familiar with that and use it for two completely separate slices of my online life. So I went there. It turns out that it needs an email address. Does it? Does it really?
  +
  +
Yes. It does. Not only that – it needs a password to associate that email address to. Which password? A new one? Or one that I use with Discord? Which of my two identities on Discord does it want? Or does it want a third one? Or one that I will only use with Miraheze? Or one that I use with my Bank? No help nor hint is supplied.

Perhaps someone here can do better.

Cannot create new page from search

Normally to create a MediaWiki page, you can simply search for the article in your search box. If the page is not found, MediaWiki will prompt you to create the page. However, on my wiki, I am not prompted to create a new page. I can create a new page if I create a link of a word that does not have a page, but I don't get the link to create a new page from searching a page that does not exist. Is there any feature that must be enabled? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arrobarriba (talkcontribs)

"Exception" error

Hello, and thank you again for your beautiful work!

My wiki is working well, but I have a problem when a new user has to set a new password at first access. The password input works, but after that I see a page which says (italian version):

Errore interno [6ed00020e037182f9468e092] 2020-01-16 10:55:53: Errore irreversibile di tipo "Exception"

Is it possible to fix it? (the best thing should be redirecting the user to a news page, like "Your account is ready, welcome and begin navigatioN"...

Why is new group in "Groups you cannot change" list?

I just created a new group (Editors2) to test. My current editors group members lost their ability to edit. I created a task on Maniphest (T5197). Meanwhile, I'm trying to set up a new group to see if it works better. But the group ended up in the column Groups you cannot change.

What do we do? -MeMeGuY

Can someone please give me a very basic and easy to follow guide to creating infoboxes and infobox templates to use on my wiki? Thank you

I mean the subject says it all- I've been trying for hours to figure out how to get an infobox to appear. I would like to create a template for an infobox for cities- so that when I use it for multiple pages, each one about a city, there will be an infobox with facts such as when it was founded, where it is located, who rules it, etc. Everything I have found is written by experts for other advanced users, and extreme absolute beginners like me can't understand a single word. Would somebody know what to do- how to get this result?

From what I've tried, I've received a template loop error, and now all it comes up with is "Template:Infobox" in red, not even "Template:Infobox city" like what I had written. I have a page called Templaet:Infobox city which has some code that looks (for example) like:

{{Infobox | title = {{{name}}} | caption = {{{time}}} }}

and on the page where I want the infobox to appear, I have something (once again, just an example) like:

{{Infobox city | name = Babylon | time = 1894 BC - 1000 AD }}

The examples are just super basic and not actually what I use, but they're to the extent. If someone could please help me understand why the infobox is not appearing, instead saying there's a loop or plain red text, that would be much appreciated.

Side note, if I manage to understand how to get this up and running, having an image in the infobox would be much appreciated. I'm not sure if I'll be able to figure it out on my own, so if you want to explain how that works as well I won't be complaining :)

Thank you very much — Preceding unsigned comment added by Claviclepatella (talkcontribs)

Welcome to Miraheze! Basically, typing {{TemplateName}} into a page simply copies ("transcludes") the text of the specified template and inserts it at that point. You've figured out how to pass parameters. There is no secret to getting images to appear; the code of the template, after being transcluded with the parameters substituted, simply has to make sense at its new home. If you are seeing "Template:Infobox" in red, it means that Template:Infobox doesn't exist on your wiki. Naturally, as your examples suggest that you named it "Infobox city". This part of the problem I suspect is the result of a simple typo.
MediaWiki's help page is here. Wikipedia and other wikis already have "Infobox city", as well as a generic template to build infoboxes for specific uses such as cities. Our FAQ may help you import their templates.
Two general tips: Find a wiki that's already doing what you want to do, and steal the code. Also, type what you want into the page without using a template, then transfer more and more of it into the template. But first, solve the naming problem! Spıke (talk)11:21 26-Mar-2020

I'm unfortunately back again with more infobox problems :/

Thank you for your message before, but I unfortunately couldn't figure out the problem. I read the wiki, FAQ and revised my Template pages, to no avail.

Firstly, I checked the page I want to infobox to appear on and it said that it was getting templates from both Template:Infobox and Template:Infobox city, even though I only had {{Infobox city}} written in. The Template:Infobox page wasn't needed (or at least I hope not) so whatever I had been messing about in there, I deleted the page, clearing it. I left just Template:Infobox city, but the page where I wanted my infobox continued to say it was pulling templates from the two pages.

It seems like there are two types of templates- the template you have on the "Template:Infobox whatever" page that tells the wiki what parameter goes where, and how to build the infobox, and the template you put on the page where you want the infobox to go. I believe that my problems are with the first kind of template. SO I went to the FAQ to see if there was something about how to use these first kind of infoboxes.

Reading the FAQ I saw you had to import and export templates to get infoboxes to work. In that case, since I don't want a premade infobox template but a custom template to create a custom infobox, I went to Wikipedia and found Template:Infobox, the page I believed had the template to create templates- in specific, the first kind of templates I was talking about, the ones that go on the "Template:Infobox whatever" page. And now I found myself with even MORE problems as I couldn't get the Special:Import page to work.

I had copied the link of the Template:Infobox page from Wikipedia, and using Wikipedia's Special:Export page, I exported it as a XML file. From here, I went to my own wiki's Special:Import page, and placed the file in. Once I got it to work by some miracle, and it said it had imported some pages such as modules and stuff, things I didn't really want. But there it was- the Template page. I went there and... nothing at all. It was blank- even in the script editor. I had gone back to the page where the infobox should be to find nothing at all.

I went back to Wikipedia's Template:Infobox page to try and copy some of the syntax (I think that's what it's called?) of what looked like the template into my own Template:Infobox page. And yet, it read it as the second kind of template I was talking about, the template that draws upon the first. It called upon itself and created a template loop.

I'm going to read about Import and Export, and I would like to read about the first kind of template, but I haven't found any information that I can understand yet. It's like reading a dictionary, but all the definitions are made up of words you don't know the definitions of.

I'm also going to search other people's wiki's on Miraheze to try and find instances of infoboxes and see if I can figure out what they've done.

If you see anything I'm doing wrong, or anything I should be doing, please tell me- it'll be extremely appreciated. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Claviclepatella (talkcontribs)

First of all, rules:
  • Post to talk pages by appending to the relevant section, or creating a new section.
  • Do not erase your previous posts to a talk page.
  • Especially do not erase my response. When you call up an edit box and type in new comments, that's what you're doing.
  • Sign and timestamp your post by typing ~~~~ at the end of your final line.
I think the reason it tells you you are calling both {{Infobox city}} and {{Infobox}} is that the former calls the latter, because the former is built in terms of the latter. Most Infoboxes, if you try to view them as a page rather than transclude them, will show you instructions on their proper usage. Typically this includes how to code images: It may be that you have to type the complete File: or even [[File: syntax, or it may be that you just type the name of the image file. This depends on how much of your parameter the template transcludes and how much the template adds on its own.
FAQ won't give you information anywhere this detailed on a specific template. Moreover, what we wrote at FAQ only described the case where you want to import complete templates from a wiki such as Wikipedia. I use templates and would not want to deal with these complications. Again I suggest that you get a page to appear the way you want it to, and only then think about using templates to automate the process to simplify creation of additional articles. Using chosen value from a field as a category for second field

Hey all, been running myself in circles trying to sort this one out, so hopefully someone has an idea or two I haven't thought of. I'm primarily using PageForms and trying to make a second field use the value of the first field as it's category, which I think needs to just be carried over as a string, though my knowledge sort of fizzles out beyond whats readily found on the internet and I might just be speaking gibberish. Anyway, this is a nonfunctional quasi-code snippet that I think represents what I'd -like- to do, but it seems not nearly as simple:

'System' field|System|mandatory|values from category=Systems|existing values only

'Planet' field|Planet|mandatory|values from category=value_chosen_in_System_field|existing values only

I can reference these fields on the following page of course, but not right on the form page itself. And I know the show on select option exists, but that requires adding all trees into the form manually, whereas I'd prefer it be dynamic as new data will be regularly added to all of the categories. I feel like I am overlooking something obvious, as I certainly can't be the first person to want to do this, and I appreciate any guidance!

Where add template?

I feel so clueless.

I just want to compile research, articles & photos to provide for leaders & others to reference as they're figuring out methods to deal with Coronavirus. Was hoping to do in basic format like this:

Main Title

Section Title Citation Summary of research (& maybe photo in there somewhere) ~Just text. No additional title needed Explanation of significance -Some little way to signify transition to new topic, by indent, italic or ??

with ability to add more sections.

Where do I make a template like this & will it automatically be inserted whenever I make a new page? I'm sorry to ask so many questions--I'm trying to learn but also get doing research faster. If you can help me figure out, thanks a TRILLION!!

  • I'm catching on some about formatting, but don't know where to make a template file that will appear on all pages.
  • I saw a reference to "local settings" (I think for css) but I am not able to find. Please help?

Update: I better not keep try to use another format to try to keep records in right now. This has turned out to be too high of a learning curve for me, lol! — Preceding unsigned comment added by MiH (talkcontribs)

You might look at my recommendations to someone else in Sec. 5 above.
The coding that might help you is a Wikitable:
Title Fred's diary
Citation https://wawa.miraheze.org

Summary of research (& maybe photo in there somewhere) ~Just text. No additional title needed Explanation of significance -Some little way to signify transition to new topic, by indent, italic or ??

Get the code to work first. Then transfer it to a template to mass-produce it! Spıke (talk)22:34 11-Apr-2020

Lost ability to post comments and create pages on Terrible TV Shows Wiki

I was a autoconfirmed user on the wiki but for some reason, I lost the rights. I talked to an admin and he made me as a confirmed user but the problem still hasn't been resolved. How can I become a autoconfirmed user again? I have no issues on Crappy Games Wiki or Awful Movies Wiki where I am a autoconfirmed user. On Rotten Websites Wiki, I'm not an autoconfirmed user but I can still make edits and post comments. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sofaking we todd it‎ (talkcontribs)

Can someone solve my problem? Why are you answering the questions posted after me without answering mine?

I can't log in

User:OishiLover75: I'm having trouble logging in. Technical problems are not restored. What should I do? Why don't the instructions above work for me.

Only the Edit Source option is available when trying to update my sandbox plus previous issue still not solved.

I want to update my sandbox on Awful Movies Wiki but it's only letting me edit the source only and not edit the page itself. That's very inconvenient for me because it's much faster to edit as the page should be displayed unless I'm uploading videos.

And I still haven't gotten a reply with the previous issue that I posted last week that I'm having on Terrible TV Shows Wiki. Can someone please let me know what's going on and why Miraheze is becoming worse to use with each passing day?

This is getting ridiculous. Once again, the users who posted after me are getting help from the staff but I get ignored. Can you at least post something so I know what the reason is?

Interwiki Links

I recently imported two wikis (both related to the Homestar Runner cartoon series) from Referata to Miraheze, and I'd like to restore some of the interwiki links from the original sites.

Add to The Broternal Wiki and Homestar Runner Fanon:

Add to The Broternal Wiki only:

In addition, I'd like the Homestar Runner Fanstuff Wiki 2 Interwiki link "hrfanon" to be changed to the new site:

Thanks! Gfdgsgxgzgdrc (talk) 22:56, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Special:Badtitle

On the Homestar Runner Fanstuff Wiki 2, the project namespace is "HRFWiki2". If you enter a project talk page (such as HRFWiki2 talk:Wiki Stuff, which doesn't exist), the "Page" tab at the top appears red, and when clicked, goes to Special:Badtitle/NS3000:Wiki Stuff instead of HRFWiki2:Wiki Stuff. This is the case with all HRFWiki2 namespace pages. Additionally, "HRFWiki2 talk" shows up twice on Special:Search, under "Advanced", which I suspect is related to the problem. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc (talk) 23:28, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Another thing worth noting: on many HRFWiki2 namespace pages, the "Discussion" tab is blue, despite the talk page appearing to be nonexistent. Gfdgsgxgzgdrc (talk) 20:41, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to change copyright notice at bottom of page

Welcome to Miraheze! Unfortunately, I can't read the home page at worldtrainwiki nor locate the file link. Perhaps you can read my wiki; it has an example here. When I create a link to Filename.mp3, the reader can click on that link and hear the narration. This is censorship. Are you even allowed to do this on behalf of Miraheze Staff? It's their say on whether or not a wiki gets archived by Wayback, not yours. KamafaDelgato021469 (talk) 23:59, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

? On Awesome/Loathsome Character Wikis

Template:Location map~ doesn't work on my wiki

Hello everyone. On my wiki, https://mypersonal.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page, the template "Location map~" doesn't seem to work. I copied it from a fandom wiki and there it works perfectly, but on my wiki, it displays "<.div style="position: absolute; z-index: 2; top: Expression error: Unrecognized punctuation character "[".%; left: Expression error: Unrecognized punctuation character "[".%; height: 0; width: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">" and shows the red dot with the city name next to it. I tried to look for those brackets that it doesn't recognize but found nothing. Thank you in advance, hope you can help me! <3 Btw sorry yesterday I mistakenly wrote this on the archive. :P — Preceding unsigned comment added by WhiteWolf69 (talkcontribs) 05:47, 8 June 2020‎

I'm not familiar with Fandom/Wikia (I preferred the Wikia name, personally), but it's quite likely they use a modified markup to render their pages. Have you tried removing the preceding period for the "div" tag that precedes the "style" attribute? That's the only think stands out to me from your quoted text. I haven't yet looked at your wiki, though. As for accidentally posted to the archive, thanks for letting us know. @RhinosF1: has already removed it. In future if you make an error like that, you can go back as soon as realize and hit "undo" on your edit(s). If you're the most recent editor, you can still undo both edits without rollback rights. Dmehus (talk) 14:58, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also, please remember to sign your posts with ~~~~ as a bot automatically archives threads according to the date of last activity. Without a timestamp, it's not necessarily able to do its job (although in this case, it would've, since I replied). Still, signing identifies who is posting. I've added your signature for you with {{unsigned}}. Dmehus (talk) 15:01, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I'm an admin at companybumpers.miraheze.org and after my last visit to the permissions settings, I don't know how, but the admin and bureaucrat groups are no longer able to add people to any other groups. @Hb1290: I guess it's because of a server-side issue. Try deleting your cookies on all miraheze domains. --Jack980517 (talk) 20:14, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed! IDK why, but when I tried fixing it the first time, the Group Assignments table had totally different groups in it for some reason. When I went back in today, the normal groups were showing. That outage the other day was just after the problem happened, so maybe that had something to do with it. Hb1290 (talk) 02:30, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this has been fixed. Paladox (talk) 13:49, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@RhinosF1: Thanks—I wasn't certain if it was a wiki owner-caused issue or something to do with the server configuration, but in any case, yeah, that's something that should get a quicker response on Phab. Will do. @Paladox:, thanks for the follow-up and/or fixing. Dmehus (talk) 14:56, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Need help on category suppression

w:Wikipedia:Category Suppression says: "you need to surround the categorization code with <includeonly></includeonly>, otherwise your template itself will be categorized."

However, I tried this on Template:maimai Difficulty, and the template itself is still added into the categories, and I don't want that. The categories are only meant to have the pages that the templates are transcluded on.

How can I achieve what I want? Thanks.

Jack980517 (talk) 18:23, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I see it. My initial guess is that something in this rat's nest is mismatched (curly braces or tags). If the </includeonly> is not in order when encountered, then the </includeonly> would be ignored as well. Spıke (talk) 03:26 11-Jun-2020
Oh, for Pete's sake! Your Usage (with </noinclude>) contains a use of itself as an example! So the template is one of "the pages that the templates are transcluded on"! Mystery solved 03:31 11-Jun-2020 I recommend that you write code that inhibits output of the categories if the target is in the Template: namespace. Spıke (talk) 03:34 11-Jun-2020
Thank you very much. I somehow overlooked that the noinclude portion contains a transclusion lol... --Jack980517 (talk) 06:30, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @Spike:. I was going to suggest that, but wasn't quite sure if it was that simple. Glad you got it resolved, @Jack980517:. Dmehus (talk) 03:36, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Code of Conduct Commission reform RfC

As was the case with the CVT reform earlier, it is time to reform the CoCC which in its current form presents many flaws and challenges. Here is my current draft, feel free to make suggestions and edits before it's published as an RfC! Reception123 (talk) (C) 13:13, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question about the results of the Zppix poll held in Requests for global rights

Granted, it doesn't meet the appointment requirements stipulated in the Global Sysop policy, but it seems to meet the requirements of Proposal 4.1.I would like to hear your opinion on which standard should be adopted. If you write it in the wrong place, we would appreciate it if you could move it to the right place.Thanks.-- (talk) 01:00, 12 June 2020 (UTC)fix.-- (talk) 01:02, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The reasoning behind my approach is;
  • 4.1 states “During this 5 day period they will remain in the group.”
  • There was no time limit enacted on requesting confirmation.
  • A CVT member who never requests a confirmation, retains rights the community have voted to abolish.
  • Therefore, in closing the RfC I said; “Anyone who fails to create one by this deadline will be deemed 'resigned'.” As a CVT member who does not opt to move from an abolished group to an established group, is effectively not requesting access to the new group. As such, abolishment of a group effectively ceases to have the previous group membership.
  • A 7-day period was given from close of RfC for a user to trigger a confirmation before the CVT group was going to be technically abolished.
  • Both CVT and Global Sysop policies have the revocation clause of “rights revoked for any reason, they must make a successful request that satisfies the criteria above in order to regain the rights.”
  • As such, a user who has their rights removed for not initiating a confirmation request in the 7 day period, of which was not objected to by anyone - including the user who acknowledged they needed to start the request within 7 days of the RfC - has had their rights removed. To which policy mandates they go through a full request to regain the rights.
  • Had circumstances which prevented the request from being filed reasonably within 7 days had been notified to a Steward, discretion may have been applied, or alternatively another user could have asked for confirmation of the rights without any issue.
The above is full reasoning behind my handling of this situation as backed up by written policy and common sense applied otherwise. John (talk) 01:21, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I see.I still thought Zppix was at CVT, but it seemed to be my misunderstanding.Thank you for teaching me.-- (talk) 04:17, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No match was found

I have a problem with the search on my wiki. When user try to find something in the full version of the wiki in the quick tips box it writes that no match was found. When user press enter button, mediawiki redirects to an existing article or search page with results. Sometimes quick results work. Maybe something on wiki broke search? Problems with the fast preview too

Need help on Navboxes

Template:Kotonoha Project

Why do the lists show as normal lists instead of horizontal ones like on Wikipedia? --Jack980517 (talk) 13:02, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jack980517: Because they're formatted using asterisks that precede each item. I believe on English Wikipedia, it's customary to use a special character that resembles a small dot, aligned vertically in the middle of the text that precedes and follows it, to separate the list items. Have a look at w:Template:Canadian banks for the character I mean. Hope that helps. Dmehus (talk) 13:12, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmehus: If you look at the source code of the template that you linked to, you'll see that it uses the asterisk as well. All example code on w:Template:Navbox/doc uses the asterisk, and that was what I followed. There's some kind of transformation going on on Wikipedia that converts normal lists to the horizontal ones which is absent on my wiki. FWIW, the guide on copying Navbox to other wikis at w:Template Talk:Navbox isn't quite clear; it doesn't even specify which parts of Common.css to copy, for example, although I worked that out on my own. I did copy all 5 lua modules mentioned there. --Jack980517 (talk) 13:17, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jack980517: Fair point. It seems like there's a dependent template, {{Hclass}}, that is also needed as it creates the horizontally styled lists. I would recommend exporting w:Template:Hclass, preferably all revisions so you are backward compatible on the CC licensing, and then use Special:Import to import it to your wiki. Let me know if that helps. Dmehus (talk) 13:32, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmehus: Thanks for looking into it. w:Template:Hclass doesn't exist though. --Jack980517 (talk) 13:40, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jack980517: It does. That's a typo in my wikilink above. It is {{Hlist}}. You can grab it at w:Template:Hlist. Hope that helps? ;-) Dmehus (talk) 13:47, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmehus: I imported w:Template:Hlist and w:Module:List, and it didn't help. Jack980517 (talk) 14:15, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Update: that was a capitalization problem because I turned off $wgCapitalLinks. But now Module:List complains that Module:TableTools is not found. The dependency tree just gets deeper and deeper... I guess I'll just not use this conversion at all. Jack980517 (talk) 14:21, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Go to the wiki page that has the template you want to import and click the edit button on that page. You probably won't be able to edit it, but you should see the modules and templates the template is using.-- (talk) 16:35, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My private wiki is throwing an error saying "Fatal exception of type MWException" on every page, and is unusable

Is my wiki broken?

So i made an wiki called Ideapedia. Source editor works, but VisualEditor doesn't. Also, the icon (not the favicon) doesn't appear. Please help! -AwesomePie16 08:38, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

When doing the logo/favicon, open up the target file in a new tab, the url should look something like https://static.miraheze.org/somewiki/xx/x/name.file. So, for example, your favicon would be https://static.miraheze.org/ideapediawiki/8/8b/Favicon_%2813%29.ico instead of https://ideapedia.miraheze.org/wiki/File:Favicon_(13).ico. For VisualEditor, do be sure to go through all the namespaces in Special:ManageWiki/namespaces, and enable visual editor for that namespace. -- Void Whispers 22:15, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Popups not working

Hello! I'm unsure if this is an error or something on my end, so I apologize if this is in the wrong place.

On the My Little Pony wiki, the popups function stopped working a few months back when the login server changed. I made a post about it on Phabricator, but it was closed within a day, saying that they should be working fine since some of the extensions got merged. I decided not to make a post about it since I assumed it was something on my end, but nothing I try seems to suggest that. I have both PopUps and TextExtracts enabled, and have checked Show Popups By Default in Special:ManageWiki/settings, but nothing works. I tried logging in and out but still nothng. Same error happens on Hilda wiki.

Any idea how to fix this? Or is it an error? --Amelia (talk) 17:33, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't remember "dark mode"

The Timeless wiki appearance is quite appealing and similar to wordpress.

However, when I set "dark mode" and change page, the wiki is light again.

Setting "dark" in every page is troublesome as clicking links is ubiquitous.

I would like a way to solve this,

It would be good to either set dark mode by default in my wiki or in my user. If both are possible I would like to know it as well.

Cheers and thanks in advance. (Don't know how to sign here, no button)

It's not quite the same thing, but Timeless-DarkCSS might be similar to what you want. As for signing, just type --~~~~ at the end of your message.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Amelia (talkcontribs)
Thanks, I will try that. And if anyone else has more reccomendations for dark themes also would try those. Our wiki community is accustomed to fandom darkness -in all possible senses- (sadly my keyboard configuration doesn't use those "tilde" signs, spanish keyboards don't have them physically inscribed either. Oh well. copy and paste it is...) --NimoStar (talk) 05:49, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I Can't Create Garbage Video Game Items Wiki For Some Reason

I am trying to create Garbage Video Game Items Wiki, where I will discuss the worst video game items. However, it won't let me do so because it keeps saying, "Your wiki request contains an invalid character." I typed everything correctly and double-checked for invalid characters, and it turns out there aren't any invalid characters. Can you please figure out the problem? The description may have contained the improper characters specified in the blacklist. Please request again without these characters, or tell us the wiki you want to create and the reasons here. --そらたこ (talk) 06:09, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Content Policy Change

Hello,

Following the recent issues with the scratch reception wikis, I'd like to propose a change to the content policy to prevent future issues.

  1. A ban on new wikis relating to scratch.mit.edu is imposed that will expire unless extended 45 days after the close of this discussion to allow the situation to settle
  2. "Wikis with the sole purpose to spread unsubstantiated insult, hate or rumours against a person or group of people" are banned indefinitely.
This does not apply to wikis that provide satire or comedy appropriately marked as such across a range of topics.
A wiki that provide reviews which are mostly negative but has any positive content is not affected.
Wikis that provide clear, proper and justification that could reasonably be understood for negative content even if the wiki only provides negative content is not prohibited.
A wiki full of statements like "x is dickhead" or "x only does crappy stuff" would be.

Thanks,

~ RhinosF1 - (chat)· acc· c - (on) 09:11, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Symbol support vote.svg Support Scratch wikis need a cooldown and wikis with unsubstantiated negative content isn't something we want to host. ~ RhinosF1 - (chat)· acc· c - (on) 09:11, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  3. If you remember a few months ago I wanted to start an Request for comment about this but Stewards said they would look. I agree that these wikis should not be here, but to change the policy is an RfC not needed? I'm still learning the rules here. DeeM28 (talk) 10:05, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  4. The point is to keep Miraheze from being a vehicle for on-line libel. The exceptions are carefully thought out. I would not like a rule that tells a restaurant review site, "You are required to carry one positive review!" as I know some joints that would not merit any; but this exception simply says that the wiki cannot simply be set up to slam every restaurant. Likewise, I am glad satire is excepted; negativity or "gallows humor" is one frequent strategy. "Unsubstantiated" is a good word (perhaps "libelous" is a better one). That you simply told the truth is a full defense against a charge of libel.
As this rule is a basis for rejecting wikis, I too would like to see a full RfC; for one thing, it is something to point to, rather than, "It's somewhere in the CN archives." Spıke (talk) 14:59 16-Jun-2020

User:Spike/Require that RfCs undergo a public comment period

An emerging RfC would require future RfCs to have two phases, a public comment period lasting at least 1 week and then a formal vote, during which new ballot proposals would not be in order. It seeks to allow public participation but have the RfC be well-defined before voting begins so as to avoid redrafting on-the-fly.

The RfC will follow the rules it proposes for future RfCs and will therefore remain in my userspace (at the address shown above) for at least 1 week. Your comments are welcome there. Spıke (talk) 15:05 16-Jun-2020

Identity

I am more than confused regarding my identity when interacting with Miraheze or it's representatives and/or community.

Of course, I am a newbie here – my wiki went online only 2 days back. So, much experience to be gathered. This is not a criticism of the resources and free hosting that Miraheze has supplied. It is more in the way of asking a question.

It seems that Miraheze provides a plethora of means by which I can contact a human but they are not all immediately transparent as to how each should be/are used.

I will list them here, for the avoidance of doubt;

Contact us

   • IRC: #miraheze (recommended)
   • Discord: https://discord.is/miraheze
   • Facebook: Miraheze
   • Twitter: @miraheze
   • On-wiki: Help center

For reasons specific to me, none of these are viable means of casual chat like, for example, "How do I get yellow text on a black background?". Sure, the answer is "Look at Mediawiki – they have loads of help". And they do, and that question would be answered. No problem.

It is not the answer that is my problem, it is the medium by which I am forced to ask any question. That is my problem. Maybe it is only MY problem.

We can discard Facebook and Twitter since I refuse to give those entities any semblance of control in my life. I have discarded IRC because I really do not want to learn another new thing (I'm already learning wikimedia and wikidata) and the On-wiki Help centre is not a chat channel.

That leaves Discord. I am very familiar with that and use it for two completely separate slices of my online life. So I went there. It turns out that it needs an email address. Does it? Does it really?

Yes.
