Cannot create new page from search

Normally to create a MediaWiki page, you can simply search for the article in your search box. If the page is not found, MediaWiki will prompt you to create the page. However, on my wiki, I am not prompted to create a new page. I can create a new page if I create a link of a word that does not have a page, but I don't get the link to create a new page from searching a page that does not exist. Is there any feature that must be enabled? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arrobarriba (talkcontribs)

"Exception" error

Hello, and thank you again for your beautiful work!

My wiki is working well, but I have a problem when a new user has to set a new password at first access. The password input works, but after that I see a page which says (italian version):

Errore interno [6ed00020e037182f9468e092] 2020-01-16 10:55:53: Errore irreversibile di tipo "Exception"

Is it possible to fix it? (the best thing should be redirecting the user to a news page, like "Your account is ready, welcome and begin navigatioN"...

Why is new group in "Groups you cannot change" list?

I just created a new group (Editors2) to test. My current editors group members lost their ability to edit. I created a task on Maniphest (T5197). Meanwhile, I'm trying to set up a new group to see if it works better. But the group ended up in the column Groups you cannot change.

Can someone please give me a very basic and easy to follow guide to creating infoboxes and infobox templates to use on my wiki? Thank you

I mean the subject says it all- I've been trying for hours to figure out how to get an infobox to appear. I would like to create a template for an infobox for cities- so that when I use it for multiple pages, each one about a city, there will be an infobox with facts such as when it was founded, where it is located, who rules it, etc. Everything I have found is written by experts for other advanced users, and extreme absolute beginners like me can't understand a single word. Would somebody know what to do- how to get this result?

From what I've tried, I've received a template loop error, and now all it comes up with is "Template:Infobox" in red, not even "Template:Infobox city" like what I had written. I have a page called Templaet:Infobox city which has some code that looks (for example) like:

{{Infobox | title = {{{name}}} | caption = {{{time}}} }}

and on the page where I want the infobox to appear, I have something (once again, just an example) like:

{{Infobox city | name = Babylon | time = 1894 BC - 1000 AD }}

The examples are just super basic and not actually what I use, but they're to the extent. If someone could please help me understand why the infobox is not appearing, instead saying there's a loop or plain red text, that would be much appreciated.

Side note, if I manage to understand how to get this up and running, having an image in the infobox would be much appreciated. I'm not sure if I'll be able to figure it out on my own, so if you want to explain how that works as well I won't be complaining :)

Thank you very much — Preceding unsigned comment added by Claviclepatella (talkcontribs)

Welcome to Miraheze! Basically, typing {{TemplateName}} into a page simply copies ("transcludes") the text of the specified template and inserts it at that point. You've figured out how to pass parameters. There is no secret to getting images to appear; the code of the template, after being transcluded with the parameters substituted, simply has to make sense at its new home. If you are seeing "Template:Infobox" in red, it means that Template:Infobox doesn't exist on your wiki. Naturally, as your examples suggest that you named it "Infobox city". This part of the problem I suspect is the result of a simple typo.
MediaWiki's help page is here. Wikipedia and other wikis already have "Infobox city", as well as a generic template to build infoboxes for specific uses such as cities. Our FAQ may help you import their templates.
Two general tips: Find a wiki that's already doing what you want to do, and steal the code. Also, type what you want into the page without using a template, then transfer more and more of it into the template. But first, solve the naming problem! Spıke (talk)11:21 26-Mar-2020

I'm unfortunately back again with more infobox problems :/

Thank you for your message before, but I unfortunately couldn't figure out the problem. I read the wiki, FAQ and revised my Template pages, to no avail.

Firstly, I checked the page I want to infobox to appear on and it said that it was getting templates from both Template:Infobox and Template:Infobox city, even though I only had {{Infobox city}} written in. The Template:Infobox page wasn't needed (or at least I hope not) so whatever I had been messing about in there, I deleted the page, clearing it. I left just Template:Infobox city, but the page where I wanted my infobox continued to say it was pulling templates from the two pages.

It seems like there are two types of templates- the template you have on the "Template:Infobox whatever" page that tells the wiki what parameter goes where, and how to build the infobox, and the template you put on the page where you want the infobox to go. I believe that my problems are with the first kind of template. SO I went to the FAQ to see if there was something about how to use these first kind of infoboxes.

Reading the FAQ I saw you had to import and export templates to get infoboxes to work. In that case, since I don't want a premade infobox template but a custom template to create a custom infobox, I went to Wikipedia and found Template:Infobox, the page I believed had the template to create templates- in specific, the first kind of templates I was talking about, the ones that go on the "Template:Infobox whatever" page. And now I found myself with even MORE problems as I couldn't get the Special:Import page to work.

I had copied the link of the Template:Infobox page from Wikipedia, and using Wikipedia's Special:Export page, I exported it as a XML file. From here, I went to my own wiki's Special:Import page, and placed the file in. Once I got it to work by some miracle, and it said it had imported some pages such as modules and stuff, things I didn't really want. But there it was- the Template page. I went there and... nothing at all. It was blank- even in the script editor. I had gone back to the page where the infobox should be to find nothing at all.

I went back to Wikipedia's Template:Infobox page to try and copy some of the syntax (I think that's what it's called?) of what looked like the template into my own Template:Infobox page. And yet, it read it as the second kind of template I was talking about, the template that draws upon the first. It called upon itself and created a template loop.

I'm going to read about Import and Export, and I would like to read about the first kind of template, but I haven't found any information that I can understand yet. It's like reading a dictionary, but all the definitions are made up of words you don't know the definitions of.

I'm also going to search other people's wiki's on Miraheze to try and find instances of infoboxes and see if I can figure out what they've done.

If you see anything I'm doing wrong, or anything I should be doing, please tell me- it'll be extremely appreciated. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Claviclepatella (talkcontribs)

First of all, rules:
  • Post to talk pages by appending to the relevant section, or creating a new section.
  • Do not erase your previous posts to a talk page.
  • Especially do not erase my response. When you call up an edit box and type in new comments, that's what you're doing.
  • Sign and timestamp your post by typing ~~~~ at the end of your final line.
I think the reason it tells you you are calling both {{Infobox city}} and {{Infobox}} is that the former calls the latter, because the former is built in terms of the latter. Most Infoboxes, if you try to view them as a page rather than transclude them, will show you instructions on their proper usage. Typically this includes how to code images: It may be that you have to type the complete File: or even [[File: syntax, or it may be that you just type the name of the image file. This depends on how much of your parameter the template transcludes and how much the template adds on its own.
FAQ won't give you information anywhere this detailed on a specific template. Moreover, what we wrote at FAQ only described the case where you want to import complete templates from a wiki such as Wikipedia. I use templates and would not want to deal with these complications. Again I suggest that you get a page to appear the way you want it to, and only then think about using templates to automate the process to simplify creation of additional articles. Using chosen value from a field as a category for second field

Hey all, been running myself in circles trying to sort this one out, so hopefully someone has an idea or two I haven't thought of. I'm primarily using PageForms and trying to make a second field use the value of the first field as it's category, which I think needs to just be carried over as a string, though my knowledge sort of fizzles out beyond whats readily found on the internet and I might just be speaking gibberish. Anyway, this is a nonfunctional quasi-code snippet that I think represents what I'd -like- to do, but it seems not nearly as simple:

'System' field|System|mandatory|values from category=Systems|existing values only

'Planet' field|Planet|mandatory|values from category=value_chosen_in_System_field|existing values only

I can reference these fields on the following page of course, but not right on the form page itself. And I know the show on select option exists, but that requires adding all trees into the form manually, whereas I'd prefer it be dynamic as new data will be regularly added to all of the categories. I feel like I am overlooking something obvious, as I certainly can't be the first person to want to do this, and I appreciate any guidance!

Where add template?

I feel so clueless.

I just want to compile research, articles & photos to provide for leaders & others to reference as they're figuring out methods to deal with Coronavirus. Was hoping to do in basic format like this:

Main Title

Section Title Citation Summary of research (& maybe photo in there somewhere) ~Just text. No additional title needed Explanation of significance -Some little way to signify transition to new topic, by indent, italic or ??

with ability to add more sections.

Where do I make a template like this & will it automatically be inserted whenever I make a new page? I'm sorry to ask so many questions--I'm trying to learn but also get doing research faster. If you can help me figure out, thanks a TRILLION!!

  • I'm catching on some about formatting, but don't know where to make a template file that will appear on all pages.
  • I saw a reference to "local settings" (I think for css) but I am not able to find. Please help?

Update: I better not keep try to use another format to try to keep records in right now. This has turned out to be too high of a learning curve for me, lol! — Preceding unsigned comment added by MiH (talkcontribs)

You might look at my recommendations to someone else in Sec. 5 above.
The coding that might help you is a Wikitable:
Title Fred's diary

Summary of research (& maybe photo in there somewhere) ~Just text. No additional title needed Explanation of significance -Some little way to signify transition to new topic, by indent, italic or ??

Get the code to work first. Then transfer it to a template to mass-produce it! Spıke (talk)22:34 11-Apr-2020

Lost ability to post comments and create pages on Terrible TV Shows Wiki

I was a autoconfirmed user on the wiki but for some reason, I lost the rights. I talked to an admin and he made me as a confirmed user but the problem still hasn't been resolved. How can I become a autoconfirmed user again? I have no issues on Crappy Games Wiki or Awful Movies Wiki where I am a autoconfirmed user. On Rotten Websites Wiki, I'm not an autoconfirmed user but I can still make edits and post comments. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sofaking we todd it‎ (talkcontribs)

Can someone solve my problem? Why are you answering the questions posted after me without answering mine?

I can't log in

User:OishiLover75: I'm having trouble logging in. Technical problems are not restored. What should I do? Why don't the instructions above work for me.

Only the Edit Source option is available when trying to update my sandbox plus previous issue still not solved.

I want to update my sandbox on Awful Movies Wiki but it's only letting me edit the source only and not edit the page itself. That's very inconvenient for me because it's much faster to edit as the page should be displayed unless I'm uploading videos.

And I still haven't gotten a reply with the previous issue that I posted last week that I'm having on Terrible TV Shows Wiki. Can someone please let me know what's going on and why Miraheze is becoming worse to use with each passing day?

This is getting ridiculous. Once again, the users who posted after me are getting help from the staff but I get ignored. Can you at least post something so I know what the reason is?

I’m doing something!

Requests for Comment/Prohibit hate-based wikis

This is now an RfC at the address shown above. The discussion that was here is moved to the RfC. Spıke (talk) 13:22 27-Jun-2020

Request for Comment/Require that RfCs undergo a public comment period

An emerging RfC would require future RfCs to have two phases, a public comment period lasting at least 1 week and then a formal vote, during which new ballot proposals would not be in order. It seeks to allow public participation but have the RfC be well-defined before voting begins so as to avoid redrafting on-the-fly.

The RfC will follow the rules it proposes for future RfCs and will therefore remain in my userspace (at the address shown above) for at least 1 week. Your comments are welcome there. Spıke (talk) 15:05 16-Jun-2020

As I got feedback only by invitation before the start of the 1-week comment period, and none at all since, I will not submit this as an RfC at this time. 23:41 23-Jun-2020 Two of my contributors suggest I was wrong to read too much into the lack of feedback during the week, so I have indeed moved the RfC to mainspace, at the address shown above. Questions about Autoarchive specifications

When I refer to Autoarchive, it says "Bot only archives texts below h2 level section".How does the archive bot work if we use strikethrough in section?--松•Matsu (talk) 15:46, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@: As Autoarchive recommends that authors use a date from 2099, within <!-- comments -->, to ensure that a section will not be archived, my guess is that the 'bot ignores MediaWiki markup. It would see your timestamp and ignore the struck-through context. This is what you want, as your recent comment should inhibit archiving even if you then saw fit to strike it through. (I welcome correction from the owner of the 'bot.) Spıke (talk) 16:58 29-Jun-2020

@Spike:Thank you for your reply. When you check the example you taught me, it seems that the bot looks at the source and makes a correct judgment even if the section displayed on the display is broken.(∵Bot ignores markup.)When I check this difference , Void seems to have corrected it just in case.(@Void:Thank you for the fix.)--松•Matsu (talk) 04:26, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox template error

I am trying import the television episode infobox from Wikipedia to my canimals wiki, but trying to do that even after css was imported, it still gives me a error, could you please explain this?Μπέλα2006 (talk) 17:52, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Μπέλα2006: Many Wikipedia Infobox templates are dependent on other templates and you must have them all for it to work. On CSS, you can't simply import it but must install it in a controlling page such as MediaWiki:Common.css. There is slightly more at FAQ#How do I install infoboxes on my wiki, like Wikipedia has?. There may be a better answer from someone who knows the details of this template. Spıke (talk) 18:24 29-Jun-2020
@Spike: I have css on but still can’t get the infobox to work correctly, could you help me do it?Μπέλα2006 (talk) 18:27, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You cannot import a {{Infobox television episode}} whose first line is {{Infobox television episode! This doesn't define itself, it calls itself, which is exactly what you are being told in the error message, Template loop detected. You have imported a template that calls another template, which you probably didn't import. See the first sentence of my first reply. Spıke (talk) 02:00 30-Jun-2020
@Μπέλα2006: If you want to bring in complex templates from Wikipedia like infoboxes and navboxes, you should export the page from Wikipedia using Special:Export on their site, making sure to have "include templates" ticked, then upload the resulting XML file on Special:Import on your own site. This will bring across your template plus any modules and other templates it might be reliant on. Hb1290 (talk) 01:15, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why am I not an autocomfrimed user yet?

I make a lot of edits on other wiki and why am I still not autocomfrimed Andrewbdfe (talk) 05:52, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Andrebdfe: Editing a lot on a wiki doesn't automatically make you confirmed PowerDagger15 (talk) 16:11, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know that okay Andrewbdfe (talk) 21:47, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrewbdfe: To add to @PowerDagger15:'s response, autoconfirmed user group is what's known as an implicit user group that is automatically granted to all registered user accounts upon reaching certain criteria. On Meta, and on most wikis, typically, one needs to make ten (10) edits and have had their account for more than four (4) days. See Special:ManageWiki/permissions/autoconfirmed#mw-section-autopromote for more detail. Dmehus (talk) 14:17, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SVG thumbnails are rendering very blurry

I noticed that the past several SVG files I have uploaded to my wiki, are rendering thumbnails at extremely low resolution. Clicking through to the original svg file display the file properly within the browser window, but basically ALL the rendered PNG files, even when being rendered on a page, are blurry and basically unusable. Is there an issue with my wiki install? Is there a work-around? – Mitchell Gore (talk) 08:38, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm having this exact issue over on See my post about 2 sections up. Hb1290 (talk) 00:12, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think I found a working solution. I switched the SVG converter from “ImageMagick” to “Inkscape” in the wiki setting, and it seems to now render the SVGs are nice, clea, crips quality at all sizes. This is done by going into the Special:ManageWiki/settings page on your wiki, clicking on the "media" tab, then selecting the “Inkscape” in the “SVG converter” menu. – Mitchell Gore (talk) 14:13, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hosting Custom Font

I have created a custom font face that I want to use (as a web font) for my RPG gaming wiki. Is there a way to upload the .woff (and/or the other format font files) and then utilize it as part fo the custom css for my wiki?

As this is a font face I have created form scratch, licensing of it is not an issue as I am the rights holder for the font.

What are the steps I need to take to actually get my custom font uploaded and/or installed and then referencing it within css as a web font for use across the entire wiki? — Mitchell Gore (talk) 06:58, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Mitchell Gore: Hi, you would need to upload the file via Special:Upload and then use @import css in MediaWiki:Common.css. If you need any help with this please let me know. Reception123 (talk) (C) 17:03, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why do we have to request wikis?

Why do we have to request wikis on here? Can't we have a tool that users can use to create the wikis themselves, like FANDOM does? Tali64³ (talk) 19:41, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Tali64³: The primary reason is to make sure that our Content Policy is being adhered to. The second reason is to prevent a massive flood of wiki creations that could crash the servers. Amanda Catherine (talk) 20:16, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Amanda Catherine: Why not hire more volunteers to close wikis that violate the Content Policy? Or upgrade your current servers? Or get more servers? Tali64³ (talk) 15:49, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I would say that crashing the servers doesn't seem likely by simply creating wikis. As for the suggestion of closing wikis that violate the policies that would be difficult as we can't monitor everything. We are currently working on an artificial intelligence system that will allow more wikis to be created automatically, however. Reception123 (talk) (C) 17:00, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On Wikia Uncyclopedia, we used DPL to sort authors in the Hall of Shame by number of featured articles. But now at, we have a DPL with no numerical sort capability at all. Thanks! This is exactly what I needed.

Category Issue

When I load up a category, it will say nonsense followed by Fatal exception of type "MWException". Why on Earth would it do something like that, but what makes it worse is it they were working fine yesterday and then all of a sudden, this happens, why does it do that?Μπέλα2006 (talk) 15:30, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Update:Category’s are working again.Μπέλα2006 (talk) 15:50, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Miraheze's servers are unreliable and have a tendency to have momentary outages. It could be one of them. ~ El Komodos Drago (talk to me) 15:23, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what caused that error that Μπέλα2006 reported, but I'm going to {{ping}} RhinosF1 to this thread as he be able to offer some insight. Separately, this is unrelated to the above fatal exception error, but just thought I'd note this category-related bug which I've recently reported and which is tracked on Phabricator at T5905 (in case anyone has also noticed and wondered about that bug). Please add interwiki link$1 to interwiki table on Snap! Wiki

I am an admin there, ( and I am requesting to add this interwiki link.$1 links to forum posts. This will make creating citations easier. It would be in the format topic:$1 Thanks in advance! GrahamSH (talk) 19:00, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@GrahamSH: You have two options here. You can request for a global interwiki administrator to add this link to your wiki's Special:Interwiki. Or, if you are needing to add multiple sites to your Special:Interwiki, you may wish to hold a local election or appointment process, consistent with your local wiki's policies, to appoint a local interwiki administrator on your wiki alone that can add sites to your wiki's Special:Interwiki. As only stewards can add this user right, whether part of the local or global group, you can then visit Stewards' noticeboard when your local election or appointment process is complete and request that a steward grant that user right locally on your wiki. If you are on Discord, you may be able to message the @Stewards group, either to notify them of the request on-wiki or possibly to make the request. Hope this helps. Dmehus (talk) 13:29, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@GrahamSH: Also, did you want that link to be forward-enabled so external links can follow those interwiki links or not? Let me know which option you would prefer, whether a global interwiki administrator to attend your wiki and add it or if you'd prefer to organize a local election or appointment process on your wiki. If the former, I can connect with a recently active interwiki administrator. Dmehus (talk) 13:35, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmehus: I think we will have an election, but for now, can you get a interwiki administrator to do it. I do want it to forward. GrahamSH (talk) 15:37, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@GrahamSH: Sure, I will {{ping}} @FireBarrier101: to this thread to follow up with you on your wiki and add the interwiki link as requested. They've been fairly active the past few days, so that's why I picked them from the list. If you don't hear from them within 2-3 calendar days, re-{{ping}} me, and I'll find another interwiki administrator. Dmehus (talk) 16:06, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, @FireBarrier101:. Just checked Snap's interwiki and noticed it reads as$. I think you might've missed the number 1 after the $? Dmehus (talk) 22:00, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why does nobody listen to me

Some people are more inactive for some days. Also, some people take a lot of breaks. CircleyDoesExtracter(Circley Talk | Global |Email the Cloud) 14:16, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading screenshot

Trying to add a screenshot to showing how to switch the SVG converter setting, as a way to illustrate a fix for blurry SVG rendering. Is there way to allow image uploads here? I tried to upload it, but I got a warning saying it wasn't allowed without an admisnntrator approval. – Mitchell Gore (talk) 14:13, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Mitchell Gore: I have moved your out of scope question from Meta:AN to the community noticeboard where general technical suppport type questions related to Miraheze and wikis in general are asked. As to your question, I have seen this question often on Discord and IRC, but am not sure what the exact solution is. Going to {{ping}} @Paladox and RhinosF1: as I believe one or both of them may know the answer. Dmehus (talk) 15:54, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Update: Mitchell seems to have found a working solution in a section higher up on this page. Not going to merge the two threads as I think it would be confusing, but rather provide this link. Dmehus (talk) 16:02, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
